What is the estimate of densityof semantic information packaged in Qur'aan

Some people say that the highest possible packing density of information is attained in the DNA molecules of human cell.

It is rightly said that the truth does not need many words. The truth - infallible fact in itself is quite heavy. On the contrary, voluminous texts void of substance are weightless like the froth and scum.

Do we have an estimate of density of information packaged in 6236 Ayahs of Qur'aan?

This is an interesting question. However, if you look at the text of the Quran it does not appear that it is written in a way to pack the most amount of information as there is a lot of repetition. Many verses repeat the same theme over and over again putting emphasis on an important concept or idea.

In any case, it would be next to impossible to determine the exact information content of The Reading using statistical analysis tools we have at our disposal today.

        Hi!

I found this little article in the Qur'aan Cosmological Model thread of al-amiyr describing some compact information contained in one qur'aanic verse. Maybe, this woud be an interesting reading.

        Post 11

A very important point not to forget. (I have posted this article as a reply before but it rightfully belongs here as post 11)

Why does the Qur'aan state the cosmological facts as follows

"that the samaawaat(heavens) and the ?arD(earth) were both Ratq(sewn or brought together etc.) and so We Fataq(unstiched or separated etc.) them both again.?"

Because of the manner in which the Qur'aan stated the cosmological facts the following two questions spring to mind

1)- does the Qur'aan say that the ?arD is a separate and unique entity in the Universe?
2)- does the Qur'aan say that the ?arD was already in existence at the birth of the Universe?

If we look at the Qur'aanic verse and even examine it a little more deeper it would appear as if the Qur'aan is actually saying that. But that perception or conclusion is not exactly true. And it is because of this inaccurate conclusion of the lack of the proper understanding of the correct meaning of the verse that all the confusion begins and then all sorts of wild statements are made by those who claim the Qur'aan to be scientific and those who assert that it is not.
And it is also because of this inaccurate conclusion that has led to the confusion which caused the Muslim scholars to deliberately falsify the translations by removing or not including the word 'both' from or in the actual translation of the original verb which is in the dual form.
In other words the Qur'aan states 'kaanataa' 'both of them were' or 'the two of them were' or 'they two were' and then the translators took it upon themselves to transform it into 'they were' or 'were'. That is why it is sacrilegious to translate the Books of ALLAAH into other languages without providing detailed explanations.

Of the approximately seventy Qur'aan translations that I have examined so far I have found only two translations which have faithfully included the dual in their translations. Not to say that the other parts of their translations are not without grave errors. It will surprise many that both of these translations that translated the verse correctly with the dual included were not made by Muslim translators but maybe surprisingly by non Muslim ones. In my opinion it would not be going too far to say that a common trait in man is that he loves to exaggerate when it suites him and he loves to hang on and to invent or follow explanations to that of which he knows little or nothing of.

Let us now examine precisely what the Qur'aan is exactly saying. It is well worth mentioning that when one has sufficiently studied the Qur'aan and the other important teachings of the Prophet (S+) one will immediately know that this verse is referring to three things simultaneously. In other words three different independent matters are being discussed providing the reader with factual information for observation and consideration.

Let us see what it is!

1)- the samaawaat (definition in a previous post)

2)- the ?arD (definition in a previous post)

3)- the samaawaat and the ?arD

To understand this better let us make a comparison with something else 'the school and the principal were both famous'

There are three clear possibilities of understanding what was said.

        1)- the school

        2)- the principal

3)- the school and the principal

In the first example it is referring to the whole school; the students; the teachers; and the principal. There was none that was specifically famous; none that stood out from the rest. Just the whole school that was famous.

In the second example it is referring only to the principal; not to the school as a whole; not to the students; and not to the teachers. There was only one who was specifically famous; one that stood out from the rest. And it was just the principal who was alone famous.

In the third example it is referring to the whole school generally as well as to the principal specifically. It was not only the school as a whole that was famous but also the principal who in his own right was also famous.

Likewise as in our example the same rule applies to the mentioned Qur'aanic cosmological verse. Let us see!

In the first example it is referring to the whole of space and everything that it contains including the earth which is a body moving in that space. In other words it is referring to the whole universe as already explained i.e. the sun, the moon, the stars, the galaxies and everything else including the earth. And it says that all these entities comprising the universe were Ratq fa (and so) Fataq (i.e. brought together as one unified entity for the purpose of breaking it apart again to form the universe).

In the second example it is referring to the earth alone and no other entity in the universe; not to the sun; not the moon; not to the stars etc. but only to the earth specifically. It says that once upon a time the earth was also Ratq fa (and so) Fataq (i.e. brought together as one unified entity (previous continents came together to form Pangaea and then again split to form the 'seven continents' ( there are seven major plates and a number of minor plates) which are still spreading apart to this day).

In the third example it is referring to both what happened in the universe as well as what happened to the earth. Both underwent their own Ratq fa (and so) Fataq and both were part of a united Ratq fa (and so) Fataq (i.e. the whole of space and everything that it contains including the earth were once upon a time in a state that was brought together as one unified entity for the purpose of breaking it apart again to form the universe which is in an observed accelerated expansion to this day.

So there you have it in a nutshell. A great amount of details all applying to two different phenomena simultaneously. Now I will leave you with a quotation with what the Prophet (S+) of the Qur'aan had said one thousand four hundred years ago.

The Book of Bukhari Volume 9. Book 87. Number 141
Narrated Abu Huraira I heard Allah's Apostle saying.
"I have been sent with Jawami al-Kalim (i.e.. the shortest expression carrying the widest meanings).
        and
I was made victorious with awe (caste into the hearts of the enemy)
        and
while I was sleeping the keys of the treasures of the earth were brought to me and were put in my hand."
Muhammad (S+) said. Jawami'-al-Kalim means that Allah expresses in one or two statements or thereabouts the numerous matters that used to be written in the books revealed before (the coming of) the Prophet .

In the next post I will give a brief discussion on the apparent conflict between the information contained in the next and second Qur'aan Cosmological verse which states that the universe shall be contracted and the observed accelerated expansion of the universe today.

To be continued inshaa allaah (if ALLAAH had willed).

Please remember that there is NO repetition in Qur'aan. Please take little time to study as to what is meant by "repetition" in the science of writing.

So what is "repetition" Mazhar?I'm not an a writer or literature acedemician, so it's very honorable if you share to us.

Beside that Quran contain some repetitive words from chapter to chapter which very important because it made the Quran became good structural Literature which make Quran easy to remembering.

              Salamun alaika,

Repitition in a writing is considered negative aspect of the work. Reiterating a point with additional information and clarifying it from another angle is not repitition. Just google for writing devices -rhetoric or about good writing.

I am not sure why you would say this but we do see repetition in the Quran. For example see 5417, 22, 32, and 40. There verses are identical and there is no additional information that helps us to 'clarify it from another angle'

Surely you of all people should know Quran is not an ordinary book that follows some well defined rules concerning good writing. It has its own way of communicating its message to mankind.

                  Salamun alaika,

Please reread about what constitutes repetition. Same words and same sentence does not mean repetition. Please read the information preceding immediately before these sentences to know the context. All are different.

And facilitating techniques or approaches are different in writing to carry home the point and enable the reader make a mental image. Using same word and same sentence to emphasise with different background frames is a superb writing, and the reader gets the voice of the author.
I repeat there is no REPETITION aspect in the Qur'aan.

                    Salam Mazhar,

I have read some material on Google related to effective repetition. I think what you are trying to say is that there no REDUNDANCY in the Quran as opposed to no repetition, which is a critical element in persuasive writing.

                    For eg.

?We shall fght on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the felds and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills,
                    we shall never surrender.?
                    (Winston Churchill)

There is repetition of words in the above quote but it is good repetition in that the main points of the argument are being reiterated more than one and in multiple different ways.

I am in agreement with you that Quran uses effective repetition to bring home a point. Surah 26 from verse 105 to 179 is another example of effective repetition.

                      Salamun alaikim,

Statistics Lowest Level of Information; Statistical data --no of letters, morphemes, words, etc.

Second Level of Information is Syntax.

Third Level of Information is Semantics.

Semantic density of information in Grand Qur'aan Greater the density, easier to perceive and translate

What is the causative factor of information? It is the Will of a Living Being Who desires to share that information with others. Information, thus, arises only through an intentional, volitional act of the Living Being. Therefore, information is but a variable quantity depending on the desire and decision of the Sender

But they can not encompass - comprehensively grasp any material-physical or abstract entity loaded with partial information of the Knowledge of Him the Exalted. Exception is only to that information which He the Exalted desired to share-acquaint them with.

It does not require wisdom of philosopher and a scientist to observe this unique reality more visibly than the Sun, perceivable even in utter darkness. It is equally explicit for a man of ordinary prudence provided he stands for a moment and ponders.

A bit of information through the medium of material world suffices for a man to immediately recognize the existence of its sender. Every bit of information introduces to us the Lord of the Universes - Allah the Exalted. Therefore, we should not be neglectful of surroundings and be worse than mammals. Let us awake and acknowledge the most visible fact all around us. -

A verbal passage of a book is part of speech or written discourse that has a complete and independent meaning transmitting a certain amount of information for the audience and reader. Accurately perceivable information intended for audience needs to be organized and embedded in succinct manner. Little semantic information spread over volumes of text will tax the reader.

Each Unitary Verbal Passage comprising a certain arrangement of words in any language has in it certain semantic density of information. This is the plentitude of ideas, pointers, concepts, and thoughts intended to be communicated or shared with the recipient by certain arrangement of words in a verbal passage. The semantic density of information in relation to statistical information-quantity of letters, phonemes, morphemes, words, and vowels etc which embed that semantic content is what we call succinctness.

The density of semantic information in short volume of text of Grand Qur'aan might be gauged from this disclosure

Semantic density of information in Grand Qur'aan Greater the density, easier to perceive and translate
