    Salaam Alaikum,

Okay, every now and again, some of us "girls" get together and chat for a couple of hours. I am usually quiet and just take everything in. But, a certain subject came up that got me talking. I have a few piercings here and there. The only one visible now is my nose piercing (when I wear my ring.) As a topic of discussion the whole " showing adornments" issue was brought up; from there a lot of other issues came up.

I said, my nose piercing wasn't something I did to draw male attention. I just like piercings, I have some that can't be seen by anyone except me. Even when I wear my scarf covering my neck I still wear earrings. Most of the women present had rings on their fingers ( other than wedding rings.) I Wear bracelets on occasion as well as rings. Most of my jewelry was given to me by my parents so it means something to me. It's not a man magnet. I have never heard of a man finding a woman attractive physically due to her jewelry or how many holes she has punched into her face and body.

Then the toenail painting issue came up. I had stopped painting my toenails for a while because I was led to believe it interfered with my wudu. However, I have picked up the practice again. Frankly speaking I could no longer stand the sight of my toes unpainted. True, some people have a foot "thing," but I don't think painting your toenails is "wrong."

They had arguments against shaping your eyebrows, wearing perfume, using perfume with alcohol in it, wearing make-up, showing your feet, showing your neck, wearing jewelry, wearing jewelry that makes noise, wearing jeans, and the list goes on.

I do not see where the Quran says I can't do any of the above mentioned things. I do believe that a woman should at least look feminine.

If I'm wrong, I don't mind being corrected; as a matter of fact, I welcome correction.

I also went to the Quran about the woman marrying a non-Muslim issue. All I can gather is that no where did it say a woman can not marry a Christian or Jew. So I figure it is okay, unless I have overlooked something.

I am new to this post and any feedback or comments would be greatly appreciated.

      Peace Ksari,

Welcome, I hope you have a good time on this forum, hopefully we can all share the knowledge we have.

Have you got a piercing on your tongue?! Thats quite popular in the UK but I don't understand why people do it!

Anyway I personally think that you should do what you like because at the end of the day your not hurting anyone and as long as your staying modest then I don't see anything unrighteous being done.

Am I right in thinking that your getting these negative vibes from secterian people? If so then I would just advise you to be patient and follow your own intuition, the secterians go on about all sorts of wierd things e.g men keeping their ankles naked!

        Salaam Sister Ksari,

I must say that I do agree what Nural Amin said.

You have probably meeting too many sectarian muslims like sunnis and shia and they have comments on everything, it's like they living in a prison they can't do anything.

Remember one thing! Everything you do it's your own responsibility in front of God.Therefore you'll have to search for knowledge throughout your life.

Quran doesn't give so much information as which colour it's best to wear and how long a dress should be and so on.God says that the women should cover their bossoms and lenghtens their garments but he never said how long we should lenghten it so that is your own moral come in what do you think is modest for you and what is modest in that country I live in or I visit etc.

If there was 100% rules about how to dress and act then it wouldn't been a challenge to be a muslim, God tests us always and the inner garments is alot better to have than the outer garments but the best way is to combine them. And most people do that if they are faithful to God.

About muslim women could marry a non muslim, well I doubt that because God says in Quran that the believing men are for the believing woman.

But maybe someone else here in this forum have some better understanding!?

        Take Care!
        Peace
        Sis Majidah

          SaLaM Ksari

This is my favourite topic lolll. Well fear not Ksari, free-minds to ur rescue lollll.

Ok, First let me clear the marriage issue

Today, the good things have been made lawful to you, and the food of those who have been given the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them; and the independent from the believing women, and the independent from the people of the Scripture before you, if you have given them their dowries, protected, chaste, and not seeking to take lovers. And whoever rejects belief, then his work has fallen, and in the Hereafter he is of the losers.

Now, the jewelery issue. Here is the thing. By you wearing the earings or rings or nail polish on ur toes.. you are NOT responsible if you get male attention. That is like saying if men shave, they will get female attention and therefore they shouldnt shave. Do u see how ridiculous that sounds?

I have my ear pierced. I wear a bracelete. And i do all that becoz I want to. Not to get female attention. There are 100 ways to do that and wearing earings or bracelette is not one of them. Same goes for females. Sunnis are metally challenged people. Shias... well they think muta is ok. Go figure. You have your own releationship with God. DONT EVER leave it for someone else.

As for wearing perfume, make-up, blah blah blah, use it at ur own desgression and common sense. God didnt say anything about it, becoz it is not important in order to get close to God. Simple As That.

            Peace Jaxal, Ksari, all,

            The God also says

6011 O you who believe, if the believing women come emigrating to you, then you shall test them. God is fully aware of their belief. Thus, if you establish that they are believers, then you shall not return them to the disbelievers. They are no longer lawful for them, nor are the disbelievers lawful for them.

So clearly a believing woman cannot marry a disbeliever man. People of the scripture e.g. Jews or Christians could be believers or disbelievers. A believing woman can marry a man from the people of the scripture, provided that man is a believer.

As for the jewelry issue, I agree with what Jaxal says. Jewelry is part of the woman's "zeenat" or adornments/beauty.

2432 And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and keep covered their private parts, and that they should not show-off their beauty ("zeenat") except what is apparent, and let them cast their shawls over their cleavage. And let them not show-off their beauty ("zeenat") except to their husbands, or their fathers, or fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or the sons of their brothers, or the sons of their sisters, or their children that come after them, or those who are still their dependants, or the male servants who are without need, or the child who has not yet understood the composition of women. And let them not strike with their feet in a manner that reveals what they are keeping hidden of their beauty. And repent to God, all of you believers, that you may succeed.

There are two kinds of "zeenat" or beauty/adornments according to the above ayat.

            1. "Zeenat" that is apparent
            2. "Zeenat" that is not apparent.

IMO most of the jewelry falls under the category of "zeenat" that is apparent and according to the above ayat, women are allowed to expose it to anyone. The other smaller category of jewelry that is not apparent i.e. hidden can be exposed only to the categories of people mentioned above. Examples that come to mind of this kind of jewelry would be belly ring, piercings in other places that are private etc.

The above two categories are general. It is left up to the woman's discretion, common sense, modesty and culture to determine exactly what zeenat/beauty/adornments she can show to whom, as long as the general instructions are followed.

Some of the other relevant ayaat are as follows

726 O Children of Adam, We have sent down for you garments to alleviate your sin, as well as feathers; and the garment of righteousness is the best. That is from God's signs, perhaps they will remember.

3360 O prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the wives of the believers that they should lengthen upon themselves their outer garments. That is better so that they would not be recognized and harmed. God is Forgiver, Merciful.

2222 God will admit those who believe and do good works to gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, wherein they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments will be of silk.

7622 They will have garments of fine green silk, and necklaces and bracelets from silver, and their Lord will give them a cleansing drink.

              SaLaM

I will clarify my point about marriage a bit more so there is no confusion.

Again if one decides to make the decision, he/she should determine if the person he/she is marrying is a believer or not. Obviously if a man/woman beleives Jesus is God, then he/she is not a believer. But from my experiance, i know plenty of christians whose beliefs are that there is a God and we believe in them. They just call themselves christians. So obviously one must make sure that is not the case. Jews on the other hand are the closet there is to a muslim so i cant forsee how there will be such a problem if one decides to marry a jew.

Jews can have disbelievers/idolaters among them too by associating partner with The God

931 The Jews said "Ezra is God's son," and the Nazarenes said "The Messiah is God's son." Such is their utterances with their mouths, they imitate the sayings of those who rejected before them. God will fight them. They are deluded from the truth!
