    peace bro,

I think its due to the "slim" part, its referring to the derivative of "islam' not "salam" otherwise it would be different (musalam?). I dont know much about grammar though.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

        Peace,

I think "muslim" comes from "aslama" and "islam". Like, "muhsin" comes from "ahsana" and "ihsan" (2112 for muhsin).

This is a listing of the occurences of these words in the scripture. Please verify if I missed some.

For english readers, please refer to different translations for a better understanding.

          I agree with you 100 %!
To me is the "muslim" the one that makes peace and settles with his/her existance. Some people might say that this is the same thing as submitting to God's will - I wouldn't use that definition though.

          Peace be upon you,
Why is the word "muslim" described as submitting?
Why is it not associated with "peace" (salaam)?

            idolfree is right!

If you go by the arabic dictionary and grammar you are lost!

Quran is not arabic but allah's universal language which can fit into anyone's logical application.

Arabic dictionary and grammar is the worst we can rely upon to get at the truth, as far as Quran-arabic/allah's universal language is concerned.

To remind Quran is understood based on logic, the direction of understanding whether right or wrong is verified by the successful application of that logic.

              Salaams Kyle,

              Peace be upon you,

Why is the word "muslim" described as submitting?

Why is it not associated with "peace" (salaam)?

It seems that "Mu" does this for all words, why not "salaam"?

That is true. I did write about this to Carrie on the thread
              http//www.free-minds.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2751

"I don?t think the two words, submission and surrender, can describe Islam. Doesn?t the word submission engage a negative feeling? I used to think that ?surrender? is perhaps a better word but now they feel the same to me. There is something negative about them. There is no willingness and no dignity there. When you give in, it means to me that you have lost! Or that there is some sort of a battle there!"

But the main word (the root word) salama or salima can mean also without damage or saved., which I don't think is far from what you are saying.

              Taj

Peace El aziz, Doctor, Taj and all,

Thank you for the clarifications, I am glad I was not the only one who was concerned about this definition.

                I have one question tough, how do you all understand the following question;

                (320) ...And say to those who were given The Book and the gentiles,"Do you submit/surrender?" ...

What should the ending be, based on the conclusions we came to above?

I imagine it should go like this
(So) are you (will you be) (too) at peace? (with what it would take, the way he=Muhammad was.)

But I should think about it more.

                  Taj

And if they argue with thee, say I have accepted whole heartedly my purpose to Allah and those who follow me. And say unto those who have received the Scripture and those who had not received the scripture "Have ye accepted?" If they accept, then truly they are rightly guided, and if they turn away, then it is thy duty only to convey the message. Allah is Seer of bondmen.

The end result is guidance to the right path; free from adversities and afflictions in life.
