Does talking ill of a public figure go against 49:11-12 in any ways?
-
Hello,
I have a question on 4911 and 4912 as to talking ill about public figures such as politicians or historical figures?
"O you who believe, let not any people ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you mock one another, or call each other names; miserable indeed is the name of wickedness after attaining faith. And anyone who does not repent, then these are the transgressors." (4911)
"O you who believe, you shall avoid much suspicion, for some suspicion is sinful. And do not spy on one another, nor shall you backbite. Would any of you enjoy eating the flesh of his dead brother? You certainly would hate this. You shall observe God. God is Redeemer, Merciful." (4912)
These verses make me think that possibily we are not allowed to talk ill of public figures such as politicians and historians but it if so then that would cut off talking about corrpution amongst politicians, the evil acts of people in history, and what is reported in the news about these public figures, which makes me think that i'm possibily taking this verse incorrectly, but i'm not sure and need some explanation and understanding to confirm.
What do you guys think? How do you guys interpret this?

If we say that Bukhari corrupted Islam with proofs from Quran, Bible, Talmud and even Avestan texts of Zoroastrianism, does that mean we are ridiculing, mocking or call him names?

Simple, talking ill about politicians is a character assasination, even it's already became habits to some people
4912 O you who believe, you shall avoid much suspicion, for somesuspicion is sinful. And do not spy on one another, nor shall you backbite. Would any of you enjoy eating the flesh of his dead brother? You certainly would hate this. You shall observe God.
God is Redeemer, Merciful.Talking ill (ghibah) can also create a fitnah (slander) to victims, and verse 2191, fitnah is more cruel than murder (al qatl).
Sallam

Peace,
So then how is one suppose to discuss the evils of a politician? How does one warn others not to vote for them?
and also slander means " A false and malicious statement or report about someone." that is not what fitnah means as I understand.

Peace Red_Eyes,
Stating the facts of what politicians have done is not wrong or related to this verse. In fact, wouldn't it be Quranic, to uphold goodness and justice? There's a lot of wrong going on even by the admission of some politicians.

Well it's still talking ill of politicians and other public figures so I would think it can relate to those verses and the thing that i'm wondering is that the verses I stated in this topic doesn't exclude public figures as far as I understand. So if indeed there is nothing wrong, I want an explanation about the verses as I may be possibly be taking these verses incorrectly, but i'm not sure and need some explanation and understanding.

Peace Red_eyes,
I can see how you've made the link, but it goes back to the point that if someone is actually doing wrong then because the Quran says uphold justice it would make sense to point out that wrongdoing. I don't believe saying x person, such as a politician, has done something wrong is related to this verse. That's the way I view it - that's part of the explanation. I view it more as people who you don't really know, or who haven't done anything to speak of - that they are mocked by others with offensive nicknames or just talked about in a horrible manner behind their backs. In terms of name calling this could also include racist slurs and such things. Interestingly you mentioned the verses where it says do not spy on each other. One of the things, which i'm sure most people know about, is the NSA and other US government programs that have surveillance programs that previously people wouldn't have thought were so extensive.
So when people condemn this and the people for those actual actions - that's not backbiting or mockery. That's stating a fact. I understand you are trying to be cautious, but I don't believe the Quran is saying be silenced about the authorities because of these verses.
For example, if someone spread the word about Pharoah's wrongdoing and not to listen to him, I don't think that would go against this verse. That would be a good thing really because he is someone who has authority who is abusing his authority and position. that's one example. Allah swt knows best.

What you are reading is not the Quran. It is a translation of the Quran. A translation is never perfect, it allways contains errors, is allways inaccurate etc.
