I'll be fasting traditionally as well. It's in line with my health goals, really.
Tigress, I advise looking through the Ramadan section for more clarity. If confused, stick to the basics and just do it however it makes sense at the moment.

omgosh please help--i didn't realize ramadan started already, this will be my first one as a convert...how are things different or the same as quran only muslim vs. traditional/sunni muslim? are there any ayats that clarify things? ahh im panicky-ing brickwall confused brickwall & brickwalln brickwall
Why the panic? Really ask that you understand what Ramadan is from the Koran only.
As for me, this month will be no different than other months.

thats the point i don't understand the duties that are from the quran and the duties that are from hadith. anyway i will do a search to figure things out. confused

Although many here have rejected hadiths, yet hold onto understandings and beliefs outside the Koran. Many commonly held beliefs, practices and understandings are not true - Ramadan is one example. Please do search to figure things out yourself. I am too.

It seems that you know nothing about The Qur?aan and its teachings. Next time you either come up with facts and figures and specifics when rendering opinions about The Qur?aan, or just keep silent. It is better for you. If you, for any reason, don?t want to follow or perform the rituals and duties prescribed by GOD in The Qur?aan, that?s fine with me, its your prerogative. Simply do not misrepresent The Qur?aan by saying this is in The Qur?aan; that is not in The Qur?aan. The Qur?aan has Chapters and verse numbers for reference. Just put down the specific verses you are talking about. Until you do that, just keep silent, it is better for you. Belying GOD and His words is a great sin/offense.

This is the month of ramadan when the muslims fast for 29 or 30 days.
O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation
Specific days (are designated for fasting); if one is ill or traveling, an equal number of other days may be substituted. Those who can fast, but with great difficulty, may substitute feeding one poor person for each day of breaking the fast. If one volunteers (more righteous works), it is better. But fasting is the best for you, if you only knew.
Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation.
When My servants ask you about Me, I am always near. I answer their prayers when they pray to Me. The people shall respond to Me and believe in Me, in order to be guided.
Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until sunset. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD's laws; you shall not transgress them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.
This is the month of repose, a break from the normal, when our energy should not be
wasted arguing and ranting with those who do not believe that ramadan is a sacred month.
You may have the energy to argue, make personal attacks, make accusations, but we
muslims just want to enjoy the blessings that the fast of ramadan brings, Please feel free

I'll be fasting this month too; whether it is the same fast as God ment in the Quran 2183-187, I don't really mind. I see it as a beneficial and good excercise for me. Not only that, my whole family is fasting, and my mother makes some very delicious foods at iftar. >D In my country, the Netherlands, fasting will be from 2.40 AM till 1030 PM so it's not the most easy fast... P
There are some good arguments from the Quranists against "tradtional fasting = Quranic fasting", such as the starting date, fasting length, whether "eat and drink" should be taken litterly or methaphorical, etc. How ever, there is no clear and logical alternative. There is one example from Maryam who fasted three days of talking, but nobody dare to explain how the verses on ramadan can refer to abstaining from speaking. Clearly, the example of Maryam is a different fasting. In fact, if you read the verses carefully, nowhere did God say that he enjoined the fast, instead, Maryam did it out of herself.

Khalilif you and others here want to continue with your rituals, holding onto your beliefs and understandings by all means go on doing just that. You have the God given right to believe and live your life any way you see fit.
There are those here who are more interested in the Truth and understanding the koran from God only. I am sure satan would like people like me to be silent.

Even if the interpretation would be slightly inaccurate on minor things it seems logically impossible that the meaning is vastly different from the current interpretation.
I am sure kgwithnob was very blunt towards you, but I guess he was annoyed by your rejecting and ignorant appearance. You come with accusations that we follow traditions when we try to follow the interpretation of the Quran to the best of our ability with the tools we have (dictionaries) and our logic and rationality. Many of us here try intensively to deep study the Arabic discourse so that we find the most accurate interpretation possible. I think kgwithnob was somewhat offended by your previous statement and I must admit I was shaking my head a bit too. I am attempting to follow the Quran's Message and I am trying to be peaceful and kind even with those who make such grave accusations. Like you use to say, God is the judge, but looking at the Quran you can pretty much see right from wrong.
Who would like to fast (approximately) 30 days for an invented meaning? Right, no one, but we do it because we believe the Quran says that and no one is going to be punished in case it would be a centuries long corruption in the words. There is a long series of verses which need to be utterly faulty to rule out something special about this month of Ramadhan.
There are verses with fundamental words for food and drink and until dawn and lots of hints at fasting. So why are we blamed for following tradition?
And you come to defense by using Shaytaan and indirectly claiming that we are his followers.

What was funny about that post by hawk99? He seemed to be pointing out a difference in the way the verse is addressed and the use of the word muslim and believer depending on your perspective.
A 'quran only' perspective or insert your name here perspective - that goes for everything in relation to what we 'discuss' not just what hawk99 said.
