    Firstly,

Does practice make you perfect? if so what will lead to being more righteous?

Being able to give up food for lengths of time.
    or
Being able to tolerate situations so as not to take part in un-righteous activities.

    ?

    Thanks.

      Thanks.

      highlight above is from me.

Verses 262 and 569 show us the three main articles of Islamic faith.

      1st Believing in ALLAAH, swt.
2nd Believing in the LAST DAY.
3rd Leading a righteous constructive life.

The first two are purely PHILOSOPHICAL and do not have much to do with our daily life routines.

The third article is actually the one that obligates a TRUE believer to physically get involved and PRACTICE his/her religion and help to bring about the true believing in the first two. In other words, physical practice of the rituals of our faith is imperative to complete our belief in GOD and the Hereafter. Without the regular PRACTICE of the third article, claiming to believe in the first two is nothing but LIP SERVICE. See 2177 below for detailed explanation of the third article of faith in Islam.

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. And those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. Such are they who are sincere. Such are the God-fearing.

      Peace,
      Khalil

Your poll is limited, you make out there is only two ways one can successfully self restrain themselves.

I would say self constraint has a lot to do with our own will power, our mind and our dedication or conviction to commit to our morals/thoughts/guidance.

2184 at the end of the verse it mentions sawm as having a benefit even if you do not know.

how does one base how well they tolerate "situations" ?

Practice helps improve for example if you talk to people who do meditation, they find it very difficult initially but through practise and continuity they improve and manage.

I think aayat 2187 is about to not confusing the different fatwa, because the more important is believe in Allah.Yes this verse implicitly said if there is no Quran intepretation which perfect.

                  Peace 357,

Restraint is a behavior or controled behavior. Ramadan is helpful in learning restraint
because one may just not have the energy to partake in situations were the outcome
is just not worth the energy spent. Ramadan slows us down, restraints us. Restraint
is think first, act second. During Ramadan we abstain from negativity by controling
such impulses, and taking these new learned behaviors with us into the future.

                  All have a blessed ramadan

Allah tells us 'philosophy' which is of no use in our daily routine. He is rambling/chattering? this befit Allah?

                    peace

1st When I used the word "philosophical", I meant believing in "ALLAAH" and "the Last day" are two abstract issues vs "leading a righteous constructive life" which is to physically be participating in performing rituals of our religion and doing acts of charities and helping others with difficulties of every day life.

2nd Forgive me, but I don't quite understand what you mean by "He is rambling/chattering? this befit Allah?" Maybe if you elaborate a bit more so we can discuss it further.

Sorry Khalil I mean verse 2177.

In that verse said "Piety is not facing west or east but righteousness ia about believe in Allah, last days etc"
Verse 2177 indeed is a respond for some people who debating about "qibla" in 2155 & 2147.

Plus this verse 1826 also said similiar, it's about to responding some people who debating for how long the group's slept in previous verses.

SO the conclusion is human created with different though and prespective each other and of course each person or group may intepretate Quran differently, then there is no point if we saw the differences like the sectarian one.

                              peace all,

practice will not make us perfect. here perfect means righteous. righteous cannot be practiced. being righteous is a gift from Allah when we ask from Him. unless we are gifted by Allah we will not know what is righteous. every time we are righteous its by the grace of Allah.

i have to pray "o, God lead me in the righteous path". this need if is my wishful prayer all-time, He surely grants me.

whereas i practice something physically with so much difficulties, to make me materially perfect. this perfectness gives me pride, because 'I' perfected it. God will not give us difficulties, so no pride. we can see the sign all around us. righteous and pride will not go together.

                              peace.
