Need help reconciling two ayat: 2:136 and 2:253 (3:084 is similar to 2:253)

So does Allah favor prophets over others or not? What exactly does this "favor" entail? I suspect translation issues, but I don't recall the reformist translation really resolving this either.

384 is a command for believers not to differentiate between prophets whereas
2253 inform us that some prophets were given excellence over others by Allah who does what He wishes.

Maybe there is a translation issue but the subject matter of (2136) is related to the "scriptures", and (2253) is related to "personal characters" etc. So there should be no distinction in the words or Books of Allah, but there are different characters, looks, traits and faith etc.
Say, "I am not something original among the messengers <- the same message, no distinction
nor do I know what will be done with me or with you
I only follow that which is revealed to me
and I am not but a clear warner."

and moving creatures
and grazing livestock
are various colors

Only those fear Allah
from among His servants <- including prophets
who have knowledge
Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving

Making distinction or difference between prophets and messengers has anyway nothing to do with those same prophets and messengers. People like to fill their minds and lives with STORIES about long gone people (such as prophets and messengers). It is just like favoring one cartoon above another. As far as we are concerned, here and today, we can never know anything for sure about those prophets... all there is are stories... not even memories. So, favoring one prophet above another is a sign of sectarianism which in turn is something TOTALLY different than the message the prophets where teaching. To try to follow a message is one thing. Having an idol in a prophet and filling your mind and waking hours with actions dedicated to the stories of this prophet is something, in essence, entirely different. I wonder how people (religious especially) fail to grasp the difference between messenger and message.

Wow, every answer is great! I think I like this forum. I will totally post more of these questions if I need to. Man, I am so glad I got away from sectarian "Hislam." It is looking more and more awful when I see so many lies upon lies and just how much the men just write themselves a blank check for life. Even the ladies among them who hate it wish it upon others and are so full of hasad that there is little comraderie without smug "hijab superiority" battles.

You shall rule among them in accordance with God's revelations, and do not follow their wishes if they differ from the truth that came to you. For each of you, we have decreed laws and different rites. Had God willed, He could have made you one congregation. But He thus puts you to the test through the revelations He has given each of you. You shall compete in righteousness. To God is your final destiny - all of you - then He will inform you of everything you had disputed.
Ranks , works , rewards... are different according to what each have earned? God has the perfect knowledge to make distinctions..We do not.
