I recently came across this quote (which is supposedly from Bill Cosby...but maybe not) however the message is still important. A good chunk of this talks about Muslims and I found that it echos how many non-muslims (people in my own life I mean) feel about Islam...and yes I know this is not a new sentiment but its still very frustrating. Before I converted to Islam I didn't think "all Muslims were terrorists" but I did wonder why a religion whose name was suppose to be synonymous with peace had so much discord within it. And while I think ppl who don't study Islam necessarily know the difference between hadith and sharia and Quranic text...does it really matter? Because at the end of the day, if they were to walk up to any Muslim on the street and ask a question about Islam, 9/10 they would be told the reasoning behind the behavior is from X,Y, and Z source and that "oh yes sharia is Divine, on yes hadith is divine, it is all different side of same coin...it is was God left for us"...even if that person does their own independent search, most of the literature repeats the same idea. So what conclusion would that person likely come to? That Islam promotes beheading and honor killings and blah blah blah. And even for topics that aren't so extreme, even everyday living situations....why is it frowned upon for Muslim women to drive certain countries? how come Muslim women don't like to shake hands with men?... its so hard to explain otherwise why this isn't true because the majority rules. I mean what is the probability of someone who has these legitimate doubts about Islam running into someone who follows only the Quran alone? Not very high.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it really sucks that these ideas are perpetuated throughout Muslim and non muslim circles alike. It seems impossible to change the tides. Islam really looks like one big contradiction. =*[Bill Cosby "I'm 76 and Tired" (Born July 12th. 1937)

can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and
daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight
offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't
"believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning
teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the
genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and
Shari'a law tells them to. I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let
Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil money to fund mosques
and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in Australia , New Zealand ,
UK, America and Canada , while no one from these countries are allowed to
fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other
Arab country to teach love and tolerance.. I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global
warming, which no one is allowed to debate.
I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help
support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ
rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses
or stick a needle in their arm while they tried to fight it off?
I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all
parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful
mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting
caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor. I'm really tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and
actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination
or big-whatever for their problems.
I'm also tired and fed up with seeing young men and women in their teens and
early 20's be-deck themselves in tattoos and face studs, thereby making
themselves un-employable and claiming money from the Government. Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 74.. Because, mostly, I'm not
going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for
my granddaughter and her children. Thank God I'm on the way out and not
on the way in. "also side note question does anyone know if the Quran mentions how old Earth is? Or if it is mentioned in Hadith? Thanks in advance!

The situation in the world today is shaped by geopolitics, war, business, and then a mixture of culture and religion can come into play. To say that Islam is a big contradition is missing the precise vocabularly required to deal with this topic. It's not Islam, its humans, its a set of factions. This has gone on since humans began. The way the hadiths are used even - there is still an issue of corruption there. I do not follow hadith and there are many that go against the Quran, but hadith can still be misused like any other text.
Well if people were to research Islam independently the first thing they come across is the Quran. I have come across non-Muslims who say they never heard of the hadith at first and they only read the Quran to find out more. So some of the first ideas they can come across is oneness of God, mercy of God, etc. Everyone also has the opportunity to understand that God is uncreated etc as well via observation of the world/universe around them, as did Abraham. If they do their own research, they could also question why Hadith are followed when you take a look at what the Quran says.

I would also say that the Israeli Palestinian conflict is not really about religion either since it was Zionism - a secular nationalist movement (religious Jews originally opposed Zionism I believe) that led to the creation of Israel etc.

The religion itself is often not the problem but the ego of the people that practice it.
Religion and Scripture is different.Religion is born based on intepretation of Scripture.
Religious sects differ each other because differences in intepretation of the Scripture.
The example is Sunni and Shiah.Their theology is not 100% actually based on hadith, but based on their intepretation of it.We do not capable to understand Quran 100% accurately like God said in verse 37.
Indeed religion is just a manmade and some efforts to get close to the Supreme Being.

yes it is humans and not religion...but it seems as if humans serve to be the mascot of Islam. we are all the representatives of what we claim to follow/believe in(whether we are following that thing in the correct way or not). well when i converted I had heard of hadith but i thought that it was an extension of the Quran...but when I read more I learned that it was a separate entity however that led to even more confusion for me. the sisters who were helping me to transition to Islam said the same things as you SupportPeace,,,follow the religion not the people,,,well unless you are a strong willed individual, (especially as a convert) it is very intimating to be in a social group...say at the Masjid, and being told to do this and do that and not to say this but to say this instead...especially when those people have good intentions and just want to help you to learn all the many many rules involved with Islam (at least from their point of view). and who wants to have been an outsider in their former religion only to come to a new one with so many expectations only to find out it is the same man-made circus and they will have to be an outsider all over again? it is not fun.
and yes i know religion are man made things but for lack of another word to use to describe the dogmas and rules and regulations inside a set of beliefs i just say religion.
anyway my original point is that i really cant expect someone in my family or my friends or just random people i have conversation with to understand that Islam is really not what it seems to be, because no matter where you turn you are confronted with one type of dogma or another. the only way to understand is to discover it and explore it for yourself. and even then you will be confronted with people who will patronize you and even condemn you for what you think ...Im in the U.S and i find this to be a lonely journey... i cant even imagine the hardships other Quran alone muslims in Islamic countries must be going through. And believe me I am the most introvert person you will ever meet and i dont even like to be bothered with people, but on topics regarding your soul it is nice to know if you are really on the right track or not.
