One further thought on this; it may not be the best to ask for earthly things.
4220 Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter, We will increase for him his harvest. And whoever seeks the harvest of this world, We will give him therefrom, and he will have no share in the Hereafter.
I am afraid to ask for anything of this world.
May ALLAH see fit to give us what is better for us and help us to accept ALLAH's Will.

It isn't really the very next verse (2201 to 4220), but it is related.
However, 4220 still stands...and 2201 is what people say.
Immediately after 2201 is this
2202 These will have a benefit for what they have earned; and GOD is swift in reckoning.
The bolded word may better translate as "portion" or "share". It is the exact same word as is used in 4220. "Benefit" may put a false positive shine on what is really a warning!
4220 Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter, We will increase for him his harvest. And whoever seeks the harvest of this world, We will give him therefrom, and he will have no share in the Hereafter.
When read in combination with 4220, it would seem that the reckoning will be worse for having asked for things.
ALLAH knows what is best, it should be safe to ask for what ALLAH knows to be best and/or help accepting ALLAH's will--it is putting trust in the Almighty.
May ALLAH see fit to Guide all seekers.

Getting Allah's favors and living a peaceful life is the biggest and uncomparable thing. To achieve this, inshaAllah, I will try to put forward my understanding with the permission of my Lord, Allah. Please go through all the aayaat quoted by seeking help from Allah before accepting it, as this is only my personal understanding.

682 Those who believe and do not confound their belief with wrongdoing; they will have security, and they are guided.When there is security, then there is no fear or grieve, be it financial, physical or whatever.
By doing this, we will have security, but does that change our financial or physical conditions? NO! nope that is because, we remain in the same condition we are but in security without fear or grieve.To change our condition and receive Allah's favors, we need to change ourselves, our life style, our habits, etc.

1311 For each one are successive before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.OK, what are the changes needed?
Answer is, every bad/evil inside us has to stopped. Anything going against the aayaat has to be stopped be it big or small in order to receive the favors of Allah.After that, an important part comes in i.e., Ajal
Ajal means a waiting period of time.You can understand Ajal from many aayaat of alQuraan. Such as 2231, 62, 734, 132 and many more.
When we stop any bad/evil habit, then there is an Ajal set for it before getting Allah's favors. Ajal also includes answers to our prayers. As I saw many people saying that our prayers are not been answered since years. To understand it better, please take a look at the following example.
For example if a person smokes and drinks and regularly asking Allah to give him excellent health and still continues smoking and drinking. Then how is he going to get an excellent health? He has to stop it, then fulfil the Ajal , then he will start improving his health for sure, inshaAllah.
But, how much is the Ajal , lets say for smoking? No body knows it, except Allah. But we know from alQuraan that there is an Ajal for everything be it small or big, either good or bad.

1338 And We have already sent messengers before you and assigned to them wives and descendants. And it was not for a messenger to come with a sign except by permission of Allah. For everything there is a time prescribed.If a person do any bad/evil, he will not get punishment for the same until he reaches its Ajal . Again the punishment continues till the Ajal set for it. You can notice there are two Ajals here, one to get punishment and another for punishment. If a person does any bad/evil even after knowing and understanding it, then he must have to turn towards Allah immediately and correct himself to get forgiveness from Allah
Then how about the Ajal here?
To understand it, there is of course an Ajal for punishment which has been written for him as soon as that person has done any bad/evil. So, there, that person has to turn towards Allah and correct himself as said in 654 AND he has to seek maghfirat from Allah, until he reaches his Ajal set by Allah for the bad/evil he has done in order to stop punishment.833
833 But Allah would not punish them while you, are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.Please also check 1410. As we don't know the waiting period i.e., Ajal , better to seek forgiveness continuously. Once the Ajal period is crossed, we may not get any punishment, inshaAllah.

1049 Say, "I possess not for myself any harm or benefit except what Allah should will." For every nation is an Ajal . When their Ajal has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede.This aayat and also 6311 clarifies that once their Ajal comes, then they will not left behind an hour nor will they precede. If you relate this with what we were discussing above, you will understand that once Ajal is over, then it will not precede for them. Hence, the punishment will not be given once the Ajal is over and during that waiting period i.e, Ajal , only if you are seeking forgiveness from your Lord, Allah. This is a continuous process.
If we continue seeking forgiveness as shown in 23118, inshaAllah, we will pass over all Ajal set for our punishments and our account with Allah will be cleaned.
One important thing has to be understood carefully, if we break our Ajal before reaching its end, we have to start over it again.
For example if a person decided to stop smoking, lets say, his Ajal is set for 30 days. But after 20 days, he smoke only one cigarette and again got back to his Lord, Allah immediately and stopped smoking again and seeking Allah's forgiveness. He still have to complete his Ajal of 30 days again, starting from that day.

7134 And when the punishment descended upon them, they said, "O Musa, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. If you remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you, and we will send with you the Children of Israel."7135
7135 But when We removed the punishment from them until an Ajal which they were to reach, then at once they broke their word.7136
7136 So We took retribution from them, and We drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.These aayaat explains the whole thread, inshaAllah.
Once we understand it, we can keep our account clean and start getting favors from Allah and a peaceful life.
Every good you do, be it a small or big, it has an Ajal as we read above in 1338. So, we should wait, turn towards Allah, seek forgiveness and receive Allah's favors.113
113 And seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified Ajal and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.Already there are many favors of our Lord, Allah on us and Indeed, this setting of Ajal by Allah is also a favor of Him on His servants.

1661 And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon the earth any creature, but He defers them for a specified Ajal. And when their Ajal has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede.Please also check 3545.

You need to pay attention to that the verse says "seeks". I take it as when you only work for personal gains and are not mindful of God. This interpretation goes well with the one that God promises those who believe a good life both in this and the next. We do not need to live miserably in this life although we might not love our possessions, but it does not mean we cannot ask God for something we need and which is just something we need. Remember all you ask for does not have to be materials, the best wishes are for things like personality and that God will help you in practical ways.
If you rely on God for the practical things in life it is better than if you are too shy to ask Him about them and instead get them by your own shrewdness. Going to God immediately before all else ought to be the best alternative in my opinion. In the end it is from God you got your things from anyway.
I think it is good to ask God first.

Ajal means a waiting period of time.
Ajal may be understood as - 'cooling off period'.
The categorical example of 'rolling of night into the day and vice versa' has been beautifully quoted in Al-Quran to take inspiration from.
