    peace all,

A more accurate translation of 1779 is shown below

Establish the salat/bond at the setting of the sun to the darkness of the night; and the reading (of) dawn; indeed, the reading (of) dawn is witnessed.
And from the night so remain awake with it additionally for yourself, perhaps your Lord will raise you (to) a status praiseworthy.

The "with it" (Arabic bi hi) refers to a preceding masculine noun, and thus can only refer to "reading" (Arabic quran). Note that "salat" is a feminine noun.

You can read the many mistranslations here
    http//www.islamawakened.com/quran/17/79/default.htm

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

      Peace Wakas,

Thanks for your work on this. I have come to like your interpretations in many cases and you know more Arabic than I do. I more depend on logic and linguistic setup and comparisons in dictionaries, and God willing, inspiration from The Lord.

I have begun to share your view on salat as well and understood that traditional interpretations are flawed and do not suit the context. For example, when do birds perform their contact prayer and how aware are they of it? But keeping a bond or communion fits the context everywhere as I have discovered. And if you establish a communion/bond as you wake up in the morning seems good. Conscious of God at all times.

It might have been slightly off-topic, but anyway related to your example.

      God bless you

What is your understanding of the red word (tahajjad)?

          And how are they "mistranslations"?

In Sunni Islam - Tahhajud is understood as an optional prayer. Is that all you are differing on? You've not really said much . . .

            peace all,

            MofF,
I do not know much Arabic either, however, like all of us now, I have access to great resources (primarily online) which allow me to study matters in depth. If combined with a robust study method one should fare well in Quran studies.
Lastly, many of my understandings have taken years to develop, and quite frankly if someone told me 10 years ago some of the views I have now I would have considered them unlikely. Thus, patience and time is key [5101, 20114).

            Earthdom,
I take "remain awake" to mean rather than sleeping stay awake with reading/quran additionally for oneself, a part of the night.

ha-Jiim-Dal = to sleep watch, remain awake. hajjada - to awake from sleep, pray in the night. ahjad - to lay the neck upon the ground (camel). tohajjad - remain awake.
            tahajjada vb. (5) impv. 1779
            Lane's Lexicon, Volume 8, pages 133

            The_Chimp,
They are mistranslations when they state or imply what is in addition is a prayer, when it is more correctly "reading/quran". This may mislead readers, and no doubt has misled some. It is not an optional prayer, it is an optional reading.

They did not "invent" this prayer - so is not exactly a simple mistranslation. Yes - this goes back to Hadith and Traditional Arabic Quran Commentaries. We have enough proof to show - that at least people in the 3rd generation after the Prophet Muhammad - interpreted this as a prayer - relating it back to the Prophet himself.

696 Initiator of the morning and Maker of the night to reside in; and the sun and the moon for counting. Such is the measure of the Noble, the Knowledgeable.

1067 He is the One who made the night for you to reside in, and the day to see. In that are signs for a people who listen.

2547 And He is the One who made for you the night as a cover, and sleep for resting, and He made the day to move about in.

2786 Did they not see that We made the night for them to reside in, and the day to see in? In that are signs for a people who have faith.

2873 And from His mercy is that He created for you the night and the day; that you may reside in it, and that you may seek of His provisions; and perhaps you may be thankful.

ha-Jiim-Dal () = he (a man) slept, or slept in the night (Lane Lexicon)

And you awake in the wee hours of the night, thereby, you the Messenger make it your habit to remain awake with/reading the Qur'aan in wee moments of night.

This state is an additional time-bound assignment-activity/supererogation for you alone.

It may well is anticipated, that your Sustainer Lord might soon honorably resurrect/revive/return you to the state of original Place/Abode of Glory and Praise.

ha-Jiim-Dal (&#1614 = he (a man) slept, or slept in the night (Lane Lexicon)

And then the Lane's Lexicon also goes on to say

"He remained awake or was sleepless"

                      Also

It is unclear - as you have not said anything - why you have quoted verse 1067? It does not use the verb Ha Ja Dah or its derivatives.

I mean what is your understanding of verses like 7320 and 2945?? Quran recitation or reading/study Quran??

I see reading/recite Quran and salat is two different things, because that two always separated by conjuctive wa' in many verses.

                            Earthdom,
In my view the regular/timed salat e.g. 'salat al fajr' (salat/bond of dawn) is synonymous with 'quran al fajr' (reading/recitation of dawn). For further reading see the article I linked to.
