Opinions about Du'a.

Hi everyone.
My grandfather at the moment is ill, and very shortly his time in this universe will come to an end. The family is a rather big family, and seeing everyone cry and make a dramatic scene is rather disturbing me because I feel, personally, grieving people to the extent that you scream and cry and start getting all religious and philosophical is all just for show, even if they don't realise it.
I don't speak Arabic well at all so I cannot communicate with my Grandfather while he lays motionless on a bed, and I can't speak aloud while I have people watching me, and I can't have time alone either due to the overwhelming amount of people that want to see him.
So now to the point of the thread, my mother and I had an argument over the fact I had not seen him today, and long story short, when the time comes and he passes, I'm more or less being forced to pray for him and read du'a. Now, I am not here to show off any arrogance or anything of the like, but I personally believe the du'a is a form of idol worship, where you call upon others other than god for help and guidance, and sometimes even pray to them, and the source of this supplication being something other than the quran. Since I am of firm belief that Mohammed did not come with any other divine revelations, all these supplications are man made, and I do not want to be apart of all this. My prayers cannot help my grandfather, because the curtain will close on his life, and he will be judged by Allah for the good and the bad he has done in his life. It's not fitting that someone can be forgiven because they have people praying for them, it defeats the purpose of doing good deeds in the first place.
My mind could possibly be clouded by pride, arrogance, anything really. For those who read this, what are your thoughts? I'm going to have to disagree with my mother and not perform the du'a and attend the gatherings for the prayers, not out of disrespect, but out of acknowledgement that god is the judge and only he can decide the verdict he gives to my grandfather based on his works during his lifetime, not the works of others. I am sure there is a verse or two that address that. Have I got this completely wrong or..?

I do not understand why should duas be addressed to any but God Himself?
As to whether they serve the dead or not, why don't you let that be God Hmself who decides. He can and he does what he pleases and He knows ho to be just and Mercyful at the same time.

Peace,
Just like salat dua has been objectified. You can certainly talk to God about your issues at any time no matter in a moment of glorification or singing praises for The Lord. Perhaps even singing a song about your problem just for the sake of it?
Putting up a schedule to observe glorification of God might be recommended as The Book (Quran) also prescribes of its guiding nature. It is natural that one wants to glorify his/her Lord at dawn and dusk even if God had not made it quite obligatory.
Verily one can call upon his Lord at any time or glorify whenever he/she likes so if we glorify God throughout a whole day then this is fine and it turns into the classical Sabbath.
God bless you
