Stuck on last two words of Sura Baqarah 2:58

I am struggling to understand the last two words of Sura Baqarah 258 ?

wa qooloo hittatun naghfir lakum khatayakum wa sanazeedu al muhsineen
(and) (say) (Repentance) (We will forgive) (for you) (your mistakes) (and) (will increase) (the) (good-doers)

Word-by-word this translates to an increase in the number of Muhsineen. All translations mention in brackets that the increase means an increase in portions or rewards even though there is no link to rewards or portions in the context of the verse. In that case it should have something like been

sanazeedu ni'mata lil muhsineen
(will increase) (favours/any other word signifying reward) for good-doers

or

sanazeedu ila ? al-muhsineen
(will increase) for/preposition the good-doers

Does anyone have any clues? What does God mean by an increase in the number of Muhsineen?

The sentence is self explanatory.

Be assured, We will keep increasing blessings for those who conduct moderately, gracefully and generously".

Context is explicit about blessings. Therefore, disambiguation for would have seemed redundant. Object of the verb denotes the beneficieries of increase.
