    Peace sister Javalette,

It seems Arabic has only one with faith or lack faith.

    Probably you're right, brother.

If that's the case, then your understanding and brother mmkhan's understanding seem to complement each other in this regard.

I think there is a problem in the traditional understanding of the word 'iman'... too.

Okay... Do you already wrote something about it?

    Peace.

      Peace,

Just because it seems like people have to be overwhelmed with tokens before they accept something (in best case if ever) I will continue to propagate for opponent. Let us continue from chapter 5.

My changes to the Monotheist Translation text is bolded.

510 And those who reject and deny Our revelations, they are the dwellers of Hell.

Note that reject and deny mean nearly the same. See the rightful translation below.

510 And those who oppose and deny Our revelations, they are the dwellers of Hell.

English dictionaries even list reject as a 'thesaurus' word of deny. See Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English

Of course for those who are true in their heart see that oppose is the correct interpretation here and all other cases of 'kafir'.

See that 'oppose' (kafir) is used in virtually all occurrences with God's threat to throw people into Hell.

Note sure what I should do to convince people about kafir because there are not exactly any usable dictionaries but one can only infer the right meaning based on the literal potency of the text and by applying some reason and logic. It is important for me to prove this because it affects the literal meaning of the Arabic discourse for the negative just as ketaab as book has a huge impact on the meaning negatively.

544 We have sent down the teachings (torah), in it is a guidance and a light; the prophets who have harmonized judged with it for those who are Jewish, and the Devotees, and the Priests, for what they were entrusted of the decree of God, and they were witness over. So do not be concerned with the people but be concerned with Me; and do not purchase with My revelations a cheap price. And whoever does not judge with what God has sent down, then these are the opponents.
545 And We have decreed for them in it that a life for a life, and an eye for an eye, and a nose for a nose, and an ear for an ear, and a tooth for a tooth, and wounds to be similar; and whoever remits anything of it, then it will cancel sins for him. And whoever does not judge with what God has sent down, then these are the wicked (or stray ones).

Red Carefully note that this word is k - t - b means decree whenever encountered while reciting the text. Refer to the previous passage that also contains k - t - b, but conspicuously traditionally always translated as book. Ketaab is not book but decree... BINGO! The decree of GOD! police

546 And We sent in their footsteps Jesus, son of Mary, authenticating what was present with him of the teachings. And We gave him the enlightenment (experimental translation), in it is a guidance and a light, and authenticating what was present with him of the teachings, and a guidance and a lesson for the righteous.
547 And let the people of the enlightenment judge with what God has sent down in it. And whoever does not judge with what God has sent down, then these are the wicked.
548 And We have sent down to you the truthful decree, authenticating what is between your hands of the decree and superseding it. So judge between them by what God has decreed, and do not follow their desires from what has come to you of the truth. For each of you We have made laws, and a structure; and if God had willed, He would have made you all one nation, but He tests you with what He has given you; so strive to do good. To God you will return all of you, and He will inform you regarding that in which you dispute.
549 And judge between them by what God has sent down, and do not follow their desires, and beware lest they divert you away from some of what God has sent down to you. If they turn away, then know that God wants to inflict them with some of their sins; and many of the people are wicked.
550 Is it the judgment of the days of ignorance that they seek? Who is better than God as a judge for a people who comprehend?
551 O you who have faith, do not take the Jews and the Nazarenes as allies, for they are allies to one another; and whoever takes them as such from among you is one of them. God does not guide the wicked people.

Note that obviously God means the sects Jews and Nazarenes that oppose monotheism and God's right decree and not traditional muslims. This is among passages happily used to hate other sects than the Islam sect. It is also a token that it is wrong that they call themselves muslims by label following a labeled religion called islam. That is why the sect islam suddenly appears around the time of the revelation of the recitation and does not appear before that. And I am sure that you only talked about 'iman' prior to that. I think Jesus does not mention a name of a religion even once in the narrative's about him and the hearsay (hadith) about the prophets of old have no name of a religion. And I am sure the recitation lay discarded for years until someone rediscovered it and this is why there is so much ignorance about it, and they interpreted that the name is Islam and its followers Muslims out of better knowledge and did not even acknowledge the real meaning of the word nor many other words but guessed (and were partially right sometimes).

554 O you who believe, whoever from among you turns away from His system, then God will bring a people whom He loves and they love Him; humble towards the believers, proud towards the opponents; they strive in the cause of God and do not fear to be blamed by those who blame. This is the grace of God, He bestows it upon whom He wills; God is Encompassing, Knowledgeable.

It means that if they reject God's system then God's spirit will go away from the people and will descend on other people instead that are better than they.

561 And if they come to you they say ?We believe,? while they had entered in with opposition and went out with the same. God is aware of what they were hiding.
562 And you see many of them hasten to sin and transgression and consuming money illicitly. Miserable indeed is what they were doing.

564 And the Jews said ?The hand of God is tied-down!? Their hands will be tied-down, and they will be cursed for what they have said. No, His hands are wide open spending as He wills. And for many of them, what has been sent down to you will increase them in rebellion and opposition; and We have cast between them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they ignite the fire of war, God puts it out; and they seek to make corruption in the land; and God does not love the corrupters.

In fact it has been clerics saying this expression in our contemporary times sadly enough. Because of the fact God is passive mostly they say this because their faith is weak.

570 We have taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and We sent to them Our messengers. Every time a messenger came to them with what their souls did not desire, a group of them they would oppose, and a group of them they would kill.
571 And they did not consider it might be a test, so they were blind and deaf. But God would have accepted the repentance from them; but many of them were still blind and deaf. God is Seer over what they do.

578 Cursed are those who have opposed from among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and Jesus, son of Mary. That is for what they have disobeyed, and for what they transgressed.
579 They would not stop each other from doing vice. Mischief is what they used to do.
580 You see many of them allying the opponents. Straying is what their souls have provided for them, for the wrath of God is upon them, and in the retribution they will abide.
581 And if they had faith in God and the prophet, and what was sent down to him, then they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are astray.

5115 God said ?I will send it down to you, but whoever opposes after this from among you, I will punish him a punishment like no one else from the worlds will be punished!?

61 Praise be to God who has created the heavens and the earth, and Who made the darkness and the light; yet those who have opposed their Master continue to deviate.

67 And if We had sent down to you a decree on parchment, and they touched it with their own hands, then those who have opposed would say ?This is but clear magic!?

611 Say ?Roam the earth, then see what the punishment of the opponents was!?

638 And there is not a creature on the earth, nor a bird that flies with its wings, except they belong to communities like you belong. We did not leave anything out of the decree; then to their Lord they will be gathered.

689 Those to whom We have given the decree, and the authority, and the prophethood, if they oppose it, then We will entrust it to a people who will not oppose it.

Like "Qur'an" the modern idol is treated. Some believe its papers has magical properties yet no one bothers about reading it truthfully

691 And they did not appreciate God as He deserves to be appreciated, for they said ?God has never sent down anything to any human being.? Say ?Who then has sent down the decree which Moses had come with, a light and a guidance for the people? You make it parchment and reveal some of it, and you conceal much; and you were taught what neither you nor your fathers knew.? Say ?God has.? Then leave them playing in their folly.
692 And this is a decree which We have sent down, blessed, authenticating what is between his hands, and that you may warn the capital of the towns and those around it. And those who have faith in the Hereafter believe in it, and they maintain their communion/melding.

6121 And do not eat from that which the name of God has not been mentioned, for it is wickedness. And the devils they inspire their supporters to argue with you; and if you obey them, then you are associators (mushriks).
6122 Is he who was dead and to whom We gave life, and We made for him a light to walk with among the people, as he whose example is in darkness and he will not exit from it? It is such that the work of the opponents has been adorned for them.
6123 And as such, We have permitted in every town the influential from its criminals, to scheme in it. They only scheme their own souls without perceiving.

736 As for those who oppose Our revelations, and become arrogant towards them; then these are the dwellers of the Fire, in it they will abide?
737 Who is more wicked than he who invents lies about God, or denies His revelations? These will receive their recompense from the decree; so that when Our messengers come to terminate their lives, they will say ?Where are those whom you used to call on besides God?? They said ?They have abandoned us!? And they bore witness upon themselves that they were opponents.

766 The leaders who opposed from among his people said ?We see you in foolishness, and we think you are one of the liars?

776 Those who were arrogant said ?In that which you believe, we oppose!?
777 They thus killed the camel and defied the command of their Lord, and they said ?O Saleh, bring us what you promised us if you are of the messengers!?

836 Those who have rejected opposed, they spend their money to turn others away from the path of God. They will spend it, then it will become an anguish for them, then they will be defeated. Those who have opposed will be gathered to Hell.

Note If they reject why do they bother about wasting money to turn people away from the path of God.

838 Say to the opponents ?If they cease, then what has passed before will be forgiven to them, and if they return to it, then the example of the previous generations has already been given.?
839 And fight them all until there is no more oppression, and the entire system is for God. But if they cease, then God is Seer over what they do.

873 As for those who oppose, they are allies to one another. If you do not do this, then there will be oppression on the earth and great corruption.

910 They do not respect those who have faith, nor a kinship, nor a pledge. These are the transgressors.
911 If they repent, and they hold the communion/melding, and they contribute towards purification, then they are your brothers in the system. We explain the revelations for a people who know.
912 And if they break their oaths after making their pledge, and they challenge the authority of your system; then you may kill the leaders of opposition. Their oaths are nothing to them, perhaps they will then cease.
913 Would you not fight a people who broke their oaths, and obsessed to expel the messenger, especially while they were the ones who attacked you first? Are you concerned about them? It is God who is more deserving that you be concerned with if you have faith.
914 Fight them; perhaps God will punish them by your hands and humiliate them and grant you victory over them and heal the chests of the faithful people.
915 And to remove the anger from their hearts; God pardons whom he pleases. God is Knowledgeable, Wise.

954 And what prevented what they would spend from being accepted from them except that they opposed God and His messenger, and they do not attend the communion/melding except lazily, and they do not spend except unwillingly.

Note that they do not reject the story about God entirely but they appear to have faith but are astray and hypocrites.

955 So do not be impressed by their wealth or children; God only wishes to punish them with it in the worldly life, and so that their souls will be taken while they are opponents.
956 And they swear by God that they are with you, while they are not with you; but they are a people who are indecisive.

1343 And those who oppose say ?You are not a missionary.? Say ?God is enough as a witness between me and you; the One who has the knowledge of the decree.?

149 Did not news come to you of those before you the people of Noah, and ?Aad, and Thamud, and those after them whom none know except God? Their messengers came to them with clarity, but they placed their hands onto their mouths and said ?We are in opposition to what you have been sent with, and we are in doubt as to what you are inviting us to.?

1413 And those who opposed said to their messengers ?We will expel you from our land, or you will return to our creed.? It was then that their Lord inspired to them ?We will destroy the wicked.?

1726 And give the relative his due, and the poor, and the wayfarer; and do not waste excessively.
1727 Those who waste excessively are brothers to the devils, and the devil was to his Lord in opposition.

1789 And We have dispatched to the people in this recitation (Qur'an) from every example, but most of the people refuse to be anything but in opposition!
1790 And they said ?We will not have faith unto you until you cause a spring of water to burst out of the ground?
1791 ?Or that you have an estate of palm trees and grapes, and you cause gushing rivers to burst through it.?
1792 ?Or that you make the heaven fall upon us in pieces as you claimed, or that you bring God and the angels before us.?
1793 ?Or that you have a luxurious home, or that you can ascend into the heavens. And we will not believe in your ascension unless you bring for us a decree that we can read.? Say ?Glory be to my Master. Am I anything other than a human missionary??

      God bless you

Thanks hawk99, but I had no trouble with which people are kufr. The issue is what the word means literally from Arabic to English.

          Peace Man of Faith,

I'm pretty sure it means cover in English i.e., hide/deny, obscure etc., in the religious context .

            Peace,

I am not so sure about that. If it means that God would have made written deny twice in a sentence. Oppose is the right word. This is why it is such an anger in the tone in the recitation (Quran). But we are free to believe whatever we like.

                  Peace hawk99,

No, my friend. Take this one verse for example with my suggestion what 'kufr' really mean

510 And those who reject oppose and deny Our revelations, they are the dwellers of Hell.

It is not the only verse where there arise questions when you choose the traditional interpretation. There are many examples and I gave many examples in previous posts.

It also adds less possibility for misinterpretation of the scripture as it does not invite to kill just about anyone you consider a "disbeliever". The only one God means is okay to kill is someone who oppose you (violently) and literally try to stop you from uttering and practicing the truth.

And it is not something I have chosen just because of wishful thinking but because from a literal standpoint it is more fluent. We already know that we cannot rely on neither dictionaries and traditional understanding, nor "hadith" interpretation. Have faith in me that I have really studied the phenomenon with kufr for a very long time and I never bought the traditional translation/interpretation because it invites to much transgression even if verses are taking into the context in chapters like 8 and 9. My rendition is carefully studied and applied to the reasoning and literal quality of the text.

Because of this I have also noticed a lot of other "literal problems" with the Arabic text and its interpretation. Take the cutting of hands in 7124 and 1231 and 2071 for example. It is senseless to cut off hands before you crucify a person because you fasten the nails in the wrist. The literal check gives me the rendition that they separate the hands and feet and then put them on the crucifixion cross. In 1231 I see that the women lifted (separated) their hands in amazement and said "Praise to God! This is not a human being but a blessed angel!". You can probably imagine how these women looked and Joseph was likely a very attractive man. They probably did not cut their hands followed by that expression. Imagine wide-open eyes and arms opened.

And to prove these contextual problems you have to use faith because to prove it is as difficult as to prove to someone that God exists because I cannot use any dictionaries, traditional usage or hadith collections to prove it to you. I can only rely on that the corrections come clear enough for you that you "buy my story", and that you see that I am blessed by my Master and your Master.

I am sure that a lot of people who read on this forum consider me a kind of madman or just a delusional man who is rambling in wishful thinking and conjecture, but I hope someone will at least see that I am right on something here. Brother 'Hicham9' finally, by the grace of God, realized I was right about 'ketaab' and its meaning as decree instead of book. I know it turns everything upside down, but we cannot continue to read flawed interpretations of the scripture and believe in it.

My next post will, God willing, delve into this topic with the cutting of hands and all other instances where this word occurs (Arabic qaa).

                  God bless you

                    Peace mmkhan,

Why hold on to kufr as to disbelieve/reject so much?

It is a disease that lives on from the tides of the sectarians who contaminated this book.

God is not that mad as to outright throw all disbelievers into Hell but those who actively oppose God. I am not saying that those who lack faith will enter Heaven, but the threat is aimed at those who show hostile behavior, oppress and that kind of activity. Anyone is a kufr who oppress people even if it was me and I threatened to expel people from their homes here. I would then oppose God rather than serve.

Anyway brother, take as much time as you want with kufr and study it carefully and God willing (ensh'allah) you will see the problem that comes with it the traditional way. I know you are one of those who are open-minded about the recitation so please open your eyes wider my friend pr

Lemme guess... although the question wasn't directed at me.

Reject is a bit like 'disagree with' or 'not uphold'. It is the absence of action.
Oppose is to actively work against something. It involves action with directed effort involved.

But of course, the usage of these two words in the English overlap.

Lemme guess... although the question wasn't directed at me.

Reject is a bit like 'disagree with' or 'not uphold'. It is the absence of action.

I have greatly enjoyed reading this thread. Due to my lack of good Arabic, I have to rely on cross-examining a lot of different translations/transliterations of Quran to form my opinions. I feel like brother "Man of Faith's" opinion on the meaning of kafir(k-f-r) is on-point. It clears up redundancies that are present in translations, which I feel are most likely not in the Arabic Quran.

From a native English speaking perspective, disbeliever is a very passive, and generalizing, word. It sweeps up anyone who may be in a state of doubt. I'm unsure if it shares this quality in Arabic. And when it is used to justify violence against people, it comes across very dissimilar from my belief of how we should be submitting to God.

                              Peace Javalette,

Zulf's description of the two words are correct. Oppose you do when you take action against something. If you reject you simply do not believe someone's argument or standing. It is similar to the word eject, to simply cause a movement of something away from an object. If you reject then you have received something which you do not accept. But in the context of the recitation these people have done more then simply reject but they fight against the truth, because they are too arrogant to stand the truth when they hear it. Muhammad did not initiate any wars he was just expelled from his town and fought the oppressors and obviously those who oppose God, as they oppose God when they oppose righteous Muhammad and are oppressive against him and those who followed him (in fact he had only one follower at first, refer to the cave in the recitation).

It is just a mere repetition of the narratives of the past if you take a look upon when the recitation brings in historical references. They threatened to harm Muhammad because of his ways and that they could not stand the truth when they heard it. Money and fame caused people to give in to their greed and they caused the commoner to join with their corrupted arguments. It is much like today if a man or woman would rise up against the falsehood of the world. Then the history would simply repeat itself. "Pious" followers of the mainstream " religions would rebel against you and the leaders (imams) would issue their stupid "fatwa" at you that only the stray people would follow in the end. And God's retribution is severe in punishment.

The people are opponents in the context of the recitation and not disbelievers. They may not have faith (iman), but there is only have no iman or have iman or to be a denier (see the previous post with example to hawk99). Disbeliever term is too generic to be a useful term and it is just a word to curse people with by the ignorant fools. And you know that anyone who upholds the decree and have faith in The Master, are aware of The Master and meld with The Master, will have nothing to fear nor will they grieve. They are the ones with faith (iman). They have "harmonized" (balanced or become symbiotic) themselves with the Creator.

                              God bless you

                                    Cut the hands, or...?

There is a very controversial decree, among many, in the polluted version of the interpretation of the recitation (Qur'an). Let us take a look at how things really are.

                                    The issue (allegedly 'cut&#039

Traditionally used to decree the deliberate cutting of the hand of criminals. There any many circumstantial problems regarding the interpretation however as we will soon see. I will use Monotheist Translation as reference with my added corrections. This is the best translation I have found so far although it has errors where other versions (sometimes by even sectarians) are right. Let us take a look at 1231, to some people's disgrace I have added notes in parentheses to explain what I think in the investigation (they are NOT part of the original Arabic text), and my corrections/editing to the Monotheist Translation in bold

1231 So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared a banquet (?) for them, and she gave each one of them a knife (?). And she said ?Come out to them,? so when they saw him they exalted him and cut separated their hands (in amazement), and they said ?Praise be to God, this is not a human being, but a blessed angel! (he looks good)?

Read it slowly and thoroughly and you see that it is quite a clear sentence. The women sees Joseph and they react strongly because Joseph is inferred as a quite handsome man and their bodily expression is to quite literally throw their hands in some kind of outwards motion. The banquet (muttaka) and knife (sikknan) I put question marks around because we have no other reference within the recitation (as far as I could find at least) to these words to compare them.

The same phrase is returning in 1250.

1250 And the king said ?Bring him to me.? So when the messenger came to him, he said ?Go back to your master and ask him what was the matter regarding the women who cut separated their hands? Indeed, my Master is aware of their plans.?

To me here it could be that the phrase is not to be read literally but like a kind of idiom. Much like lost their deeds (minds) as to what was planned to do. Hands are used at other instances of the recitation quite allegorically. See that even God has hands(!). What we can say as a summary though is that the women never cut their hands at all. They might have held knives, but they were distracted.

If you take a look at the word's occurrence in 7160 you will see that most translations represent this word as it is suppose to

7160 And We separated them into twelve patriarch nations; and We inspired Moses when his people wanted to drink ?Strike the stone with your staff,? thus twelve springs burst out of it. Each people then knew from where to drink. And We shaded them with clouds and We sent down to them manna and quail ?Eat from the good things that We have provided for you.? They did not wrong Us, but it was their souls that they wronged.

It does not indicate that there is any cutting action but separating. If the word would have implied a physical "chopping" motion it would not be used here to divide. The hands are also in plural which may infer that the women make a separating movement with them.

                                    Same here

7168 And We divided them through the land as nations. From them are the upright, and from them are other than that. And We tested them with good things and bad, perhaps they will return.

                                    Please look at 227

227 The ones who break the pledge to God after making its covenant, and they sever seperate/"blur" what God had ordered to be delivered, and they make corruption on the earth; these are the losers.

See that the word does not have a cutting implication at all when "corrected".

2166 When those who were followed will disown/separate those who followed them, and they will see the retribution, and all excuses will abandon them.

I think that Monotheist have turned around the Arabic letters a bit but picked a decently good translation. The word still does not imply any physical cutting but very abstract separation. It is a motion of two or more objects from each other with no implied severing.

Interesting, my friends, here comes the rejectors opponents again, I take the following verse because it gives a better contextual feeling

3127 Thus He will sever separate/dissociate a group of those who reject oppose, or disgrace them; then they will turn back frustrated.
3128 You will have no say in the matter, for He may pardon them, or punish them; for they are astray.
3129 And to God is what is in the heavens and in the earth, He forgives whom He pleases, and He punishes whom He pleases; and God is Forgiving, Merciful.

                                    Is not God wonderful?

533 The recompense of those who fight God and His messenger, and seek to make corruption in the land, is that they will be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut separated off from alternate sides or that they be banished from the land; that is a disgrace for them in this world and in the Hereafter they will have a great retribution.

I am not sure as to what the original language implies, but to me it looks like imprisonment. Imagine chains when the hands and feet are separated. Anyway, from a literal standpoint you see that the narrative implies killing straight away, or execution, or imprisonment or exile. It steadily presents four solutions of different degree. That is my 10 cents. It looks like an old idiom of depriving someone of their rights as a punishment (for a time).

Same idiomatic language reoccurs in 538

538 As for the thief, both male and female, you shall cut separate from their resources "imprison them" ? as a penalty for what they have earned ? to be made an example of from God. God is Noble, Wise.

You see that the language is idiomatic.

Now let us go back to 1231 and unwind the "mystery" with the women's cut hands

1231 So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared a banquet (?) for them, and she gave each one of them a knife (?). And she said ?Come out to them,? so when they saw him they exalted him and cut their hands were pacified (in amazement), and they said ?Praise be to God, this is not a human being, but a blessed angel! (he looks good)?

You see. The mystery of the cutting of hands in 1231 is solved forever. And praise be to God, the Almighty.

Just because, let us continue for a little longer.

644 So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened for them the gates of all opportunities; and when they were happy with what they were given, We took them suddenly! They were confounded (and
645 It was thus that the remainder of the wicked people were wiped out; and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.
645 The evil-doers of the people were separated (recognized); and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.
646 Say ?Do you see that if God were to take away your hearing and your eyesight, and He seals your hearts; which god besides God can bring it to you?? See how We dispatch the signs, but then they turn away.

                                    645

And do not thank me but thank my Master and your Master. I only clarify the Master's decree.

694 ?And you have come to Us individually, just as We had created you the first time; and you have left behind you all that We have provided for you; and We do not see your intercessors with you that you used to claim were with you in partnership; all is severed separated between you, and what you have claimed has abandoned you.?

772 We saved him and those with him by a mercy from Us, and We destroyed separated the remnant of those who rejected opposed Our signs/calls, they were never with faith.

7124 ?I will cut off your hands and feet from alternate sides en-shackle/separate your hands and feet, then I will crucify you all.?

86 They argue with you about the truth when it has been made clear to them; as if they were being herded towards death while they are watching!
87 And God promises you that one of the two parties will be defeated by you; and you wish that the one least armed be the one. But God wishes that the truth be manifest with His words, and that He eliminates the remnant separates the source of the rejecters opponents (that the truth is apparent).
88 So that the truth will be manifest, and the falsehood will be finished; even if the criminals hate it.

I think I will cut it there. No more to argue about.

                                    God bless you
