I am curious to what members of this forum think about this statement
"those who learn without a teacher, will learn from shaytan"
I have heard this phrase over and over and over again. you cannot read the Quran without a teacher. you cannot blah blah blah blah about religion without a teacher. Even before I denounced hadith, I sort of defy this statement. is it hadith? it is... right? its like an autoresponder whenever I question a hadith and point out to Quran, out came this statement. brickwall

All sweeping statements like this have to be taken relatively. They probably are legitimate within a context. The context that people are always conditioned no matter what, because learning and understanding what one sees and reads does not come in a void, it fall on previous assumptions and beliefs by default.
On the other hand it says learn. To learn is not the same as obey or follow blindly. Yes, we must guard ourselves from our own unsuspected or unconscious dispositions, but not in order to take the unsuspected or unconscious or deliberate bias of others. What that master shaytan means is precisely as I would interpret it, the uncritical swallowing of anything because of lack of understanding, not to be critical with oneself and then become uncritical of "authority".

First of all you should ask yourself a question sister, who said that? Obviously, there is none statement like that in the Quran, more, you can harly find a Surah in Quran which wouldn't contain statement like this 'these are the signs for those who possess intelligence/reason' or for ' signs for those who reflect' 'who think' etc etc. Actually Quran never says that you need any human teacher to teach you it. All you need is reason and trust in God that He will guide you.The statement "those who learn without a teacher, will learn from shaytan" sounds as statement invented by human, worse even, perhaps by Shaitan(remeber, he is a deceiver, making good things look bad and bad things look goood) and it contradicts itself

Learning is an active process of acquiring knowledge through various means. Limiting learning process to receiving knowledge from the 'learned one' is backward and it is actually diminuishing the result of learning. There are many ways of gaining knowledge like through empirical experimentation, learning from others results AND building upon their understanding. Following this logic, Prophets like Abraham or Muhammad followed shaytan because they didn't have any 'human' teachers!!!

Now if you consider that human can learn from other 'teachers' that just human (God's guidance and revelation, experimentation, reflection, analysis, etc), then there is not such a thing as learning without teacher!!! All the wisdom on earth comes from God and whetether one acquire it through your personal analysis and reasonong (like Abraham) or learning from observation and experimentation, that all can come from God.
Therefore, this statement contradict itself, is illogical, and as such, cannot come from the Divine Truth but from fallible humans blinded by shaytanic deception.

So they fall under the fallacy of "if you obey most people on Earth they will divert you from your path that is because they conjecture and only guess"?
It is wise seeing that it is "most" inserted into the passage which means you cannot learn the recitation from particularly many people but you have to be wary of what kind of stuff people try to teach.
Then I suppose "cutting" the hand of the thief is one example.

Of course we do need teachers to learn from but that does not mean to let them spoonfeed, brainwash and indoctrinate us.

I usually receive uncomfortable response when I remind other 'muslims' to be careful with man-made hadiths.
I think that maybe they actually open their masks and show their real faces, because looks like friendly-polite Sunni may turn into angry-hateful people when they're reminded to be careful with man-made hadiths.
Perhaps it can be said that names such as Bukhari or Muslim have been very sacred popular for them?
Could it be that they favor the instruction from Bukhari (man of the middle of nowhere?) more than the instruction from God?

And thank you everyone. For your replies. Tonight I was saddened by my beloved father's response against an article that I copied and emailed him (article on shahadah on this website). I dare not tell him where did I get it from, just asking what does he think about it. I had hoped that he would perhaps ponder about it. But I did sensed his struggle in trying to defend his faith. His focus was of course on the articles 'attack' on the personalities in the hadith, evading the Quranic verses part. This, broke my heart, and keeping a straight face to pretend to agree with him is almost impossible. I may need some time to cry this out '(

I don't think it is always have to be shaytan but more about "personal fallacy", besides Allah said. . .

- and had certainty regarding Our revelations
