[39:6] - Nothing to do with cattle
-
http//mostmerciful.com/?p=1264
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON VERSE 396 OF QUR'AN Practically ALL the published translations of the Qur'an in circulations are from the period before the scientific discovery of Microbiology which deals with the DNA and RNA Replication within the wombs of our mothers. Hence, most of the translators have copied the Four Pairs of domesticated Cattle from the ancient Arab Superstitions, namely; sheep, goats, camels and oxen. This does not coordinate with the rest of text that clearly speak of activities within the wombs of our mothers. Please read the phrase by phrase translation of verse 396 with modern vocabulary and then spread the Revealed Truth that Glorifies the True Message of the Qur'an that was unfolded ahead of its time. The last line of this verse reveals Fa-'anna tusrafoun? meaning; "Then how are you deluded?" (and believe something that is not revealed!)

ALLAH REVEALS "For every (revealed) tiding there is a term set for its fulfillment and in time you will come to know (its secret)." Qur'an 667. The phrase by phrase translation of Arabic text into English, with modern vocabulary.
khalaqa kum
"He created you"
NOTE Introduction of verse 396 is about "our own creation".min nafsin' wahidatin
"from a single cell"
NOTE In Arabic language there are no reflective personal pronouns, their place is partly supplied by the word "nafs" (a feminine noun, singular). It denotes soul; life; spirit; breath; will; self; an individual, a human being; a living organism, etc. Since this verse deals with the issue of human coceptions within the womb of their mothers, nafs denotes, a living cell - an organism. The word "nafs" is followed by "wahidatin" meaning; your creation is "from a single cell".thumma ja'ala minha zawjaha
"then created, of like nature, its mate"
NOTE The word "zawj" means, wife; husband; spouse; companion; one of a pair; consort, mate. The creation of a "mate, of like nature" is a reference to the close pairing of homologs at melosis. Microbiologically it is termed as Synapsis, meaning the side by genetic association of homologous (corresponding) maternal chromosomes and paternal paired chromosomes in the early stages of our own conception.wa 'anzala lakum minal 'an-ami thama ni-yata 'azwaj;
"and He provided for you eight genes, in pairs"
NOTE The verb "anzala" means; to cause to descend; to provide. The collective noun "an'am" is used for living creatures. Here it refers to the life bearing Genes. The phrase "thama-niyata 'azwaj" means "eight-in-pairs". This is the reference to the Two Strands of DNA that are held together between the "Base Pair (bp). Each strand has the GENETIC CODE (ATGC - Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine). They make up the bases of DNA and RNA.yakhluqu kum fee butouni 'ummahati kum
"He makes you in wombs of your mothers"
NOTE This statement endorses that Allah's revelation is about the conception of our body.khalqam-mim ba'di khalqin
"In creations, one after another"
NOTE This is a direct reference to the scientific term "DNA Replication". It is the nature's greatest marvel. This is a process by which the "double helix" of DNA unwinds (uncoils) and makes an exact copy of itself. And, thereafter these TWO "double helix" make TWO replicas. The multiplication keeps going. Due to this process of "creation after creation", a human child that starts from a single cell has more than 200 billion cells and has all the body parts necessary for life, within a preiod of nine months.fee zulumatin thalath.
"In three layers of darkness."
NOTE The germ layers begin to form quite early in human embryonic development. The outermost layer is called the ectoderm. The innermost layer is the endoderm. Between these two germ layers lies the mesoderm.Zaliku-mu-LLahu Rabbu kum
"Such is Allah, your Creator and Cherisher"
la-hul-mulk.
"To Him belongs (all) dominion."
La 'ilaha 'illa Hou.
"There is no god but He."
Fa-'anna tusrafoun?
"Then how are you deluded?"

I liked the post. Interesting observations and conclusions. Worth exploring further, especially the terminology.
Such is Allah.
For anyone without too much pathological stone character of the heart, it would be enough to study the world, like science is used for doing, and we'd quite spontaneously see the presence or reality of Allah.
Unfortunately, we've traditionally taken a very backwards, fictional, unnatural approach when thinking of The Creating Power. We make up a separate world of fantastic creatures and events, reeking from irrationality and imagination. We create an imaginary mental world which we populate with human like angles, human like gods and Hollywood like miracles. We make the religious world very unnatural, supernatural. No wonder why people deem religion, and hence also the concept of God, ludicrous and unnecessary. Religion is teaching their stuff in a way that make them seem unnecessary. Obviously, the fables become unnecessary because they're created in a separate mental realm. All we need to do, is to LOOK and PONDER, not invent fiction.
We can have Allah, and divine inspiration, and spiritual beings, without resorting to fantasy. The key is to avoid inventing things and then spreading them like false gossip. We need to remember AQ 1736 and keep an open, soft and humble heart. What ever we have of the unseen world and the seen world, they're ONE, and there can never be a conflict between them, even if we only can see part of it all. Of course we must always resist the temptation from casting the final judgement in any matters, labeling things as non-existent or final-truth, because there is always so much more to learn, know, discover and understand. Let's always keep the Big Unknown in mind. Let's not be arrogant; there's lot's we don't know. Heck, many people don't even believe in acupuncture.
The mere fact we exist should be enough reason there is Allah. But of course, if your image of God is more of the fantasy type, then it's hard to believe in, unless you apply blind faith, which is what religion is really all about. Keeping religion in mind and what it teaches, and how, one can understand why atheists reject it all.
If science clashes with religion, go with science, but watch out for the religion of science, which is altogether something else than objective and humble science. Science is often portrayed to say things it really doesn't say. We interpret it as per our wishful thinking, assumptions and preconceived opinions.
Sorry for going fftopic

Well, The pairs are still four even though Thymine is replaced by Uracil in RNA.
Regarding the cattle, we'd need to crossreference the entire quran. Perhaps a word can have more than one meaning, if the context allows for that. Perhaps the quran is indeed amazingly multilayered.
Best regards

First noun is in accusative case. Therefore, grammatically it can be considered either as equivalent appositive to nouns used in this discourse in the previous Ayah; or a circumstantial accusative; and can be taken as object of elided verb. As equivalent appositive or circumstantial accusative, it described a subset out of Set of the Mammals. Thus the Possessive Phrase denotes that Mammals comprise of eight families, groups. This phrase is also used as the direct object of a verb in the following sentence of another Ayah 3906
http//www.haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.Arabic%20Text/039.%20Az%20Zumar/Temp%2001%2039.06n.gif
And He the Exalted has descended for you people eight families amongst the herbivore mammals. The ground reality is slightly different about the number of families in the category of quadruped herbivore Mammals. There are perhaps Nine families of herbivore Mammals. The prepositional phrase "for you people" restricts the information to only those families which are meant for us, the humanity. The ninth family of mammals is Pig family-omnivore which is prohibited for human consumption.

Or perhaps only two pairs A-T/T-A, G-C/C-G.
In DNA, U is not used. RNA is used to read the DNA. DNA however is the storage and vessel for the genetic code.

Salamun alaikum.
Thanks for sharing this nice article.
The verses of Qur'an are indeed source of infinite wisdom and perfect knowledge. We human beings have been trying to get the best wisdom from it with our limited knowledge. Our predecessors have understood the verse to imply different types of cattle - there is a certain degree of wisdom in it. With our more sophisticated "knowledge" we may be able to get a better interpretation and that could possibly give us more wisdom. But let's not be too arrogant to call our predecessors ignorant. There is absolutely no guarantee that our current knowledge is perfect - we are merely in a journey toawards better understanding. Our predecessors were "right" given their available knowledge, we are also right given our available knowledge. Just like we continue to observe nature to fine tune our understanding - we continue to research Qur'an to get more and more wisdom. Einstein would never call Newton ignorant.
Saying so, I have a slightly different idea about the exact components of Human embryogenesis that correspond to verse 396. The explanation that seems most plausible to me is that the 16 ana'm refers to the 16 cells in a "morula". Formation of morula signifies the completion of the first stage of drakness, formation of fetus is the second stage and finally childbirth signifies the end of third stage of darkness.
May Allah guide us all to the straight route.

396 He created you (all) from a single person then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness. such is Allah, your Lord and Cherisher to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He then how are ye turned away (from your true Centre)?

This ayat is referring to the development of the embryo. The translation of eight pairs of cattle in the middle of the ayat makes no sense. On the other hand, eight pairs of life giving cells makes complete sense. The sixteen cell "morula" is a well known pre embryo stage. It is after this stage that the "morula" will become a "blastocyst" which attaches itself to the uterine wall and foetal development occurs. The uterus itself consists of three layers.

Tne number of cattle has always leftme asking questions Donkeys, horses, reindeer, llamas, vicu?as, guanacos, bufaloes bisons, goats, sheep, cows...
I am glad this question is brought up, I have felta that there was more to it if only I knew well some more about biology...
It is certain that as new knowledge is acquired we cannot keep intepreting the Qur'an according to previous interprettions where they did not have the knowledge at hand now, as if because it having been said before it ws set in stone. They did not know better and did (hopefully) their best. For us it is not our best.

Salaam Huruf,
I completely agree with you. The interpretation of certain words completely changes the meaning of the ayat. The problem lies in translating one word in exactly the same way in every ayat which contains that word. Sometimes the meaning given for that word does not make sense in the context it's being used in. There are many such examples in the Quran.

Salaam Janet
I agree with you that words can give different derived meanings depending upon context but in Arabic root meanings of a word cannot be ignored for a stand alone word. Yes words can convey different meanings when used in phrases/idioms or combination of words.
