Even though I don't know any arabic I tried to interpret salat. After my reseach of the previous topics I learnt that it has these meanings prayer, supplication, petition, oration, eulogy, benediction, commendation, blessing, honour, magnify, bring forth, follow closely. I tried to use the most appropriate words for the sentences. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I believe that most of these meanings were used in the Reading. Here's what i understand

    ORATION (OF THE QURAN)

011.114 And establish the oration (of the quran) at the two ends of the day and at the approaches of the night For those things, that are good remove those that are evil Be that the word of remembrance to those who remember (their Lord)

017.078 Establish the oration (of the quran) - at the sun's decline till the darkness of the night, and the morning oration and reading for the oration and reading in the morning carry their testimony.

All these verses are addressed to the prophet, not to us. We don't have to recite Allah's word to Him again. That's nonsensical.

024.058 O ye who believe! let those whom your right hands possess, and the (children) among you who have not come of age ask your permission (before they come to your presence), on three occasions before morning oration; the while ye doff your clothes for the noonday heat; and after the late-night oration these are your three times of undress outside those times it is not wrong for you or for them to move about attending to each other Thus does Allah make clear the Signs to you for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.

029.045 Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and fullfill the commitments for commitment restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.

017.110 Say "Call upon Allah, or call upon Rahman by whatever name ye call upon Him, (it is well) for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Neither speak thy oration aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between."

Again Mohammed is asked to recite the Book not too loud or in a low tone, not us.

009.054 The only reasons why their contributions are not accepted are that they reject Allah and His Messenger; that they come to oration (of the quran) without earnestness; and that they offer contributions unwillingly.

062.009 O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to the oration (of the Quran) on the Day of Assembly, hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic) That is best for you if ye but knew!

004.043 O ye who believe! Approach not the oration (of the quran) with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say,- nor in a state of ceremonial impurity (Except when travelling on the road), until after washing your whole body. If ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. For Allah doth blot out sins and forgive again and again.

005.006 O ye who believe! when ye prepare for the oration (of the quran), wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.

Mohammed used to recite the Quran publicly and Allah wants the participaters to be clean and not intoxicated maybe because they can say things they wouldn't say in a clean state of mind and mock Allah's words when they are drunk.

009.103 Of their goods, take alms, that so thou mightest purify and sanctify them; and orate for them. Verily thy oration are a source of security for them And Allah is One Who heareth and knoweth.

002.239 If ye fear, orate on foot, or riding, (as may be most convenient), but when ye are in security, celebrate Allah's praises in the manner He has taught you, which ye knew not (before).

This verse doesn't make any sense for me. What is the danger? Anyone who can orate/pray/magnify God on foot can also orate/pray/magnify Him standing too?

004.101 When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if ye shorten your oration, for fear the Unbelievers May attack you For the Unbelievers are unto you open enemies.

004.102 When thou (O Messenger) art with them, and standest to lead them in oration, Let one party of them stand up with thee, Taking their arms with them When they finish their prostrations, let them Take their position in the rear. And let the other party come up which hath not yet magnified - and let them magnify with thee, Taking all precaution, and bearing arms the Unbelievers wish, if ye were negligent of your arms and your baggage, to assault you in a single rush. But there is no blame on you if ye put away your arms because of the inconvenience of rain or because ye are ill; but take (every) precaution for yourselves. For the Unbelievers Allah hath prepared a humiliating punishment.

    FOLLOW CLOSELY, COMMITMENT

This meaning is the most used one I think.

009.071 The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil they fulfill the commiments, pure themselves, and OBEY Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.

005.055 Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers,- those who fulfill the commitments and purify themsevles, and they bow down humbly.

005.058 When ye proclaim your call to follow (the quran) they take it (but) as mockery and sport; that is because they are a people without understanding.

019.059 But after them there followed a posterity who missed the commitments and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face Destruction,-

005.091 Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from the commitments will ye not then abstain?

011.087 They said "O Shu'aib! Do thy commitments command thee that we leave off the worship which our fathers practised, or that we leave off doing what we like with our property? truly, thou art the one that forbeareth with faults and is right-minded!"

009.005 But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and fulfill the commitments and purify themselves, then open the way for them for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

005.012 Allah did aforetime take a covenant from the Children of Israel, and we appointed twelve captains among them. And Allah said "I am with you if ye (but) fulfill commitments, purify themselves, believe in my messengers, honour and assist them, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan, verily I will wipe out from you your evils, and admit you to gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you, after this, resisteth faith, he hath truly wandered from the path or rectitude."

    PRAYER, SUPPLICATION

008.035 Their prayer at the House is nothing but whistling and clapping of hands (Its only answer can be), "Taste ye the penalty because ye blasphemed."

    BLESSINGS

002.157 They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance.

024.041 Seest thou not that it is Allah Whose praises all beings in the heavens and on earth do celebrate, and the birds (of the air) with wings outspread? Each one knows its own blessing and praise. And Allah knows well all that they do.

By the way if both dua and salat mean prayers what is the difference between them?

      Salaam,

Du'a means prayer or calling. It is an action of calling out to one, usually for help I suppose. That is how it is portrayed in the quran.

        Peace Born Again,

For the first three verse you mentioned
All these verses are addressed to the prophet, not to us.

Regarding, for example, 1778 I agree. However, 2458 is addressed to "O you who believe". Doesn't that mean it is addressed to the believers at large?

          Peace,

I am just curious as to why the traditional salat is labeled as a form of "idol worship" by many people here? If you think about it AFAIK, when Sunni's pray that way, they are reciting Quran verses, not hadith verses and they are bowing to God saying God is Great, God be glorified, etc...then why is it wrong?

Yes, 2458 is addressed to the believers because it's about the privacy of the parents. Children shouldn't go into their parents room without permission before morning oration (early in the morning) and after late-night oration of the Quran.

This is what I understand from the verse.

              Peace,

I think the Quran in whole is addressed to anyone who wishes to seek and follow GOD's path. You said

This is like Quranic abrogation! SALAT is meant to order us and command us like it ORDERED one of the messengers mentioned in the Quran. That way we learn and reflect about what we have heard. The Quran is recited for our own benefit and salat is for our own benefit. None of this is for GOD and HE doesn't need any of this or our words. This is for our own progress and success not to help GOD, He created this for us to succeed.

              Peace

              Nural

033.052 It is not lawful for thee (to marry more) women after this, nor to change them for (other) wives, even though their beauty attract thee, except any thy right hand should possess (as handmaidens) and Allah doth watch over all things.

Is this addressed to everyone as well?

                Peace

                    Peace be upon you

I changed my view on 1187 after reading Wakas's more rational explanation of the verse. That verse belongs to the "oration" category too.

                    1. "And my people, give full measure and weight with justice, and do not hold back from the people what is theirs, and do not roam the land corrupting"

                    2. "What will remain for you with God is far better if you are believers. And I am not a guardian over you"

                    3. They said "O Shu'ayb, does your oration instruct you that we leave what our fathers served, or that we do not do with our money as we please? You are the compassionate, the sane!"

How can you hate Spongebob, TheNabi? He's hilarious.
