[48:9] - watu`azziruuhu watuwaqqiruuhu

Just a little something I stumbled upon. I had been wondering whether I should post this when there are more important issues at hand, but I figured I might as well just get this out of the system and move on.

Basically, there are 2 types of translations here "watu`azziruuhu watuwaqqiruuhu" is either translated as to refer to God OR to the messenger. For example

That you may believe in God and His messenger, and that you may support Him (watu`azziruuhu), honor Him (watuwaqqiruuhu), and glorify Him, morning and evening.

So I checked the concordance and it turns out that the answer is pretty simple. The roots 'A-Z-R and W-Q-R are only used several times in the entire Qur'an. (Skip to the end of this post for the conclusion/tl;dr)

Indeed God made a Covenant with the Children of Israel. We appointed twelve leaders among them. God said to them, "I am with you so long as you follow the Divine Commands, spend your wealth for the community, believe in My Messengers, assist them, and give a beautiful loan to God (that is paid back to you manifold in both lives 2261). I will absolve your imperfections, help you create balance in the society and admit you to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath. (Now the law has been revealed to Prophet Muhammad.) Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, will find him well described* in the Torah and the Gospel with them. He enjoins upon them the Right, and forbids them the Wrong. He declares lawful all good things, and declares unlawful only the unclean things. He relieves people from the burdens of false dogmas they carried. He breaks the shackles of mental and physical slavery that they used to carry, and brings them out from darkness into Light. Those who believe in him, honor and support him, and follow the Light that has been sent forth with him, are the eternally successful.

Conclusion/tl;dr
In verse , "watu`azziruuhu" should be translated as to refer to the messenger (as per and ) while "watuwaqqiruuhu" to God (as per ). I realize it's arguably a minor issue, but I just thought it's worth pointing out.
That you may believe in God and His messenger, and that you may aid/assist him (the messenger), and revere Him (give God His due weight/worth), and glorify Him (swim/strive hard towards Him) morning and evening.
