I've been fasting since I was a little child, most Muslims do a full month I think with not eating and drinking from before sunrise to after sunset and they usually eat in the early morning and evening, but I don't even eat in the morning and I eat one meal.
It has never been difficult for me, and I generally live like that anyway, though it isn't good for the metabolism really so its better and healthier to exercise and eat small meals throughout the day (when not fasting of course).
I don't have an issue getting hypoglycemic or anything and have practiced going without food for long periods of time, going without bathroom for long periods of time and other things, but ever since I was a little child I was doing it and I've always been disciplined and having great willpower.
Also, I've never been that desirous of food or craving it like crazy so it isn't hard to abstain from it or most things.
Because fasting is not a challenge really, I take the opportunity to really think about things related to deprivation. I was empathizing with this bum I was watching the tv with earlier today and the commercials seemed so inane and ridiculous from the perspective of a bum (like I was imagining how a bum might see these things, and they were so silly seeming, things I could never have and didn't even care about, a woman punching a person in a sandwich outfit, talking about expensive insoles for shoes, all kinds of consumerist stuff).
So yeah, 30 days seems a nice amount of time to get a taste of what it is like to be a starving vagabond deprived of anything in the world, especially when the fasts are so many hours long in the north lands.
Often they are in a condition similar to those fasting, because there is food all around them but they don't have the money to buy it and have to wait.
It reminds us of so many things we can be grateful for, even though they are not that great and the overall story is unpleasant, but how we have been particularly spared and blessed as compared to even more difficult stories like having no money, being disabled somehow, all these difficulties, fasting I think can be used to help practice and enhance compassion as well.

Q02185 - Month of Ramadhan, was revealed in it the Qur'an, guidance for Mankind and a manifestation of the guidance and the Separator. So whoever witness among you all, the month, than he should fast;
From the Quran, it does not says ?Ramadhan is the month but Month of Ramadhan?. So if we read the Quranic verse in context, we will find that it does not says about a month named Ramadhan. In fact, when the Quran mentioned Ramadhan it is actually saying about the astronomical event that occurs twice each year as the Sun reaches its highest or lowest excursion connected with the seasons.
The summer solstice, which happens on June 21 or 22 each year, has the longest daylight time. It's also the first day of summer. The winter solstice, on December 21 or 22, has the shortest daylight time, and officially kicks off winter.
This is only true in the Northern Hemisphere. South of the Equator, the dates (and the seasons) are reversed the summer solstice (still the longest day of the year) falls on December 21 or 22, and the winter solstice is on June 21 or 22. For example, when it's summer in North America, it's winter in South America (and vice versa).
So when the Quran speaks of Ramadhan, it is talking about the summer solstices. Ramadhan which comes from the root - ra, mim, dal - itself means hot. And when the Quran says when we witness Ramadhan ? Summer Soltices, whether we are in the North or South of the Equator, we should fast.

I am in flux at the moment about what Ramadan means, between the ijtihads of Rashid Khalifah, then @Layth, @Ayman and now @shirk...
Just now, I tend to believe it is a marker for the beginning of a period, at which it is asked to fast from 3 to 10 days, and Allah knows best what it means.
Also the marker, can also be the period itself.

JUDAISM...... hmm......Sorry bro, from what I see, already the sectarian Islam had been indoctrinated with Judaic philosophy which is rather UNQURANIC and your acknowledgment that it seems more realistic? It is true that the Arabs of South Arabia were the first Jews and one of the first recipient of the Tawrat besides the Bani Israel and it is plausible that they knew somethings? But how true? However, if you manage to look for Noshirk's work, do please allow me to have a look...
I believe Ayman's Ijtihad's does make some sense considering the fact that the name of all the 12 months are not mentioned in the Quran including the Hajj months. So Ramadhan cannot be the name of a month relating to fast. It can only be an astronomical event connected with the seasons.
