    Peace Bookish.

The most reasonable answer would be to say that the current practice does not place "shahr ramadhan" at its proper place. If "shahr ramadhan" occured close to one of the equinoxes, fasting would be possible worldwide. Check the first diagram here http//www.schwedisch-translator.de/schweden/mitternachtssonne.html

And please forget abou 19 pattern

Fasting isn't possible in Sweden if we are to follow the directions given in the Koran.

Honestly speaking, if it were not for the 19 pattern, and for the fact that the Koran is quite consistent and free from cruel laws (for example, the Old testament has some violent verses that I'm not comfortable with at all...the Hadiths are full of contradictions...some scriptures are inconsistent), it would have been equally difficult for me to consider if the Koran could be from God.

What reasonable answer can we provide to such obvious questions about fasting?

What if the word Sawm (commonly translated as fasting) has nothing to do with with fasting from eating and drinking? Have you ever considered that option?

I recommend reading the posts in this thread. You might find them useful.

        Peace Bookish.

GOD provides answers , but do we overlok His answers most of the time.

        What is the verse saying

        2184
Specific days (are designated for fasting); if one is ill or travelling, an equal number of other days may be substituted. Those who can fast, but with great difficulty, may substitute feeding one poor person for each day of breaking the fast. If one volunteers (more righteous works), it is better. But fasting is the best for you, if you only knew.

Could with great difficulty also mean where the day is very long ( The sun hardly sets!)?

Why not, since the ill and traveller have already been mentioned?

        GOD bless you.
        Peace.

That's a very good point good logic. But it says an equal number of days...how do Swedish people do that? And don't you think it's better for them to simply pretend that their days are like ours....and fast...instead of not fast at all?

I agree at the initials do not provide 19 divisible counts every time, but wherever they do, that's still remarkable.....and not something that you can dismiss as chance. If we say Muhammad did it, that still begs the question of why he would not take credit for it in his lifetime....

As for the equinoxes...and the idea that fasting isn't related to eating and drinking....it escapes me why God would hide the real meanings of words so profoundly....under the play of language. Isn't Koran supposed to be a clear book? If we assume this, then a simple reading of the Book a few times should suffice for our salvation....why probe so deep and come up with ideas that aren't explicitly made by the Book?

It seems that the deeper we go, the greater are our chances of getting lost....and confused..

God knows best.....and may He guide us all to the truth...

Not" with great difficulty" there is no equal number of days?

There is only feeding one poor person!

            GOD bless you.

              Peace bookish,

2183 O you the ones believe yeh of written/prescribed on you the fast as what written/prescribed on the ones from before you that may you righteous being

2184 days of numbered of are so from be from among you illness of or on journey so count from days another and on the ones can afford it ransom feed poor so from volunteers best of so it best/better for him and that fast yeh of best for you if are you knowing

2185 shr/cycle Ramadan the one has descended in it the Qur?an guidance to the humankind and clear signs from the guidance and the criterion so whom shd/affirm/witness from among you al-shr/the cycle so to fast it and who be illness of or on journey so count from days another intends the god with you the ease and not intends with you the hardship and to complete yeh of the count and to magnify yeh of the god on what he guided you and that may you thanks giving

              Thus if one cannot witness the shr/cycle i.e. solar/lunar sunlight/daylight they?re exempt.
Likewise if you?re unsure or whichever circumstance perhaps if you?re able feed the poor.

There is no consistent pattern only hollow multiples one can find perusing any text.
Nor is ?the number? mentioned rather group of nineteen entities over feminine fire.

@Timur, How do you know the proper place is the equinox?

@Taro, Even if it is as you say, the problem of no sunset remains.

@Good logic, having the option to feed someone to make up for breaking the fast doesn't change the fact that these people are missing "what is best" for them.

                Peace all.

The fasting in ramdan was designed for the People where the revelations where sent those are in the middle of the world.
The edge is always extreme while in the middle you have normal condition for example you have a Cup of icecream in the middle it is frozen but at edge it is milkcream but it belongs to the icecream which is still frozen.
So while most can fast from sunrise to sunset the People don?t need to fast ,like the milkcream they belong to the icecream, belonging to the fasting People of the middle.
I join the proposal of goodlogic for the People in sweden to feed the poor instead.

2143 And thus have We willed you to be a community of the middle way,118 so that you might bear witness to the truth before all mankind, and that the Apostle might bear witness to it before you.119 And it is only to the end that We might make a clear distinction between those who follow the Apostle and those who turn about on their heels that We have appointed the direction of prayer which thou hast formerly observed for this was indeed a hard test for all but those whom God has guided aright.120 But God will surely not lose sight of your faith-for, behold, God is most compassionate towards man, a dispenser of grace.

                  Peace yo

                    Peace brother,

I'm afraid there is.....across several suras. I suggest you read Layth's article, "19 - Fact or Fiction?". It's a very sincere and unbiased evaluation of the 19 pattern. It acknowledges some difficulties, but sums up that the 19 pattern is still a fact about the Koran, and not something accidental.

Had it been an accidental pattern, you would not expect to find initials giving away the clues...

                    God knows best...

I happened to stumble across this article today, http//www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2014/07/ramadan-sweden-with-no-dusk-no-dawn-20147614423642407.html

                      In the comments, someone says,
Fasting isn't possible in Sweden if we are to follow the directions given in the Koran.

First of all, allow me to greet you with the Islamic greetings of "Burn in Hell!"

Now onto your question which, in the manner of the religious, I will avoid answering and instead ask in what part of the world do you find God lacking in palpable and perceptible cruelty that you would think that what is cruel could not also be from God, seeing that there are diseased and horribly deformed and mutilated children for one example?
