Questions about Verses

I have a question about two verses of the Qur'an. I have the Monotheist translation in front of me at the moment.
533 says, "The recompense of those who fight God and His messenger, and seek to make corruption in the land, is that they will be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from alternate sides or that they be banished from the land; that is a disgrace for them in this world and in the Hereafter they will have a great retribution."
I don't understand why so many punishments are listed. Why not just one? Why do these punishments vary in severity? Could anyone shed some light on this?
My second question concerns verses 246-8.
"And those who accuse their spouses, but they have no witnesses except for themselves, then the testimony of one of them is to be equivalent to that of four witnesses if it is sworn by God that he is being truthful.
And the fifth shall be the curse of God upon him if he is of the liars.
And the punishment will be averted from her if she bears witness four times by God that he is of the liars."So if the testimony of a spouse holds the same weight as four different people testifying, does this mean he has to testify to four separate occasions? I say this because verse 248 says the woman must bear witness four times, and it doesn't make sense to me that she would have to say that he was lying four times in response to one event.
Any thoughts and help in clarifying my thinking would be appreciated. )

There is no punishment appointed in 5.33. All it says is that those evil people will meet their own fate that will be precisely what thy have been handing around. That will be their own destiny. It is like sying that what goes around comes around or like in the gospell who kill by the sword will die by the sword. If you live criminally yu will die likewise. Nobody is order to give that as a punishment to anybody else.
as to 24.2-6 the accusing husband must testify four times that he is telling the truth and the fifth....
What is the problem in that the wife testifies four times that he is lying and the fifth...
I think you have to look at this ayas togther with the ayas that follow. Then you will see that he aim is not to, punish anybody for zina but to keep people from carrying slander and evil talk. See what it says up to 26. Peopple enjoy very much spitting gossip and destryoing reputations and lives.
Requiring four witnessess is a means of stopping evil talk if it is possible to stop it.
If it is a husband who does then he should formally testify four times ad invoque the curse of God on him if he is not truthful. That is expposinng himself a lot, and also from hte point of view of some people, making a fool of himself. Without that injonction he might kill the wife, an also the purported offender and to some extent get away with it or with lesser punishment.
As you may well see, muslims in general have not made use of this ayas toimprove their societies, either they have disregarded them or they have corrupted the whole by paying false witnesses and having corrupted corrupted administrtions of justice.

Hmm, okay. I guess what I'm not grasping yet is the time issue, meaning how much time there must be between each of the husband's four testimonies. Surely it's not instantaneous?

Well yes, it has to be instantaneous, because what those four testimonies seemto do is instead of the four witnesses, and those four witnesses obviously have to be at the same time. And the same goes for the four testimonies of th woman which will contradict the accusation of the husband.
