Biggest proof that salaat is commitment

9609 Seest thou one who forbids
9610 A votary when he (turns) to pray?
9611 Seest thou if he (Prophet) is on (the road of) Guidance?
9612 Or enjoins Righteousness?
9613 Seest thou if he (the one who forbids) denies (Truth) and turns away? This was the first sura that was revealed. There were no times for salaat, 11114 and 1778 wasn't revealed, no Fatiha. How did this slave pray? When did Prophet teach him and he's praying? He's praying according to what? Which suras did he recite? There was only 13 AYATS revealed in all, not SURAS! Prophet was an ummi (unaware of the other holy books), when did he learn how to pray?
9609 Seest thou one who forbids
9610 A slave when he (turns) to COMMIT?
9611 Seest thou if he (Prophet) is on (the road of) Guidance?
9612 Or enjoins Righteousness?
9613 Seest thou if he (the one who forbids) denies (Truth) and turns away?A slave wanted to commit to Prophet but was prevented.

Peace be upon you,
Why do you believe, with no proof, that this is the first chapter to be revealed?
Salaat = the process of enlightenment (learning)
YOu don't need speacial instructions for that. Little children begin learning as soon as they are born. Please reflect on that.

Peace be upon you idolfree
I've always been taught that it was the first revelation . But you're right I guess, cos the only proof I got for such a claim is the hadiths. Sorry I think I got a lot more to forget Here's another clear proof that it's commitments.
-
THOSE WHO BELIEVE in Allah and the Last Day ASK THEE FOR NO EXEMPTION FROM FIGHTING with their goods and persons. And Allah knoweth well those who do their duty.
-
ONLY THOSE ASK THEE FOR EXEMPTION WHO BELIEVE NOT IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY, AND WHOSE HEARTS ARE IN DOUBT, so that they are tossed in their doubts to and fro.
a. Those who don't believe in Allah go to fighting without earnestness.
-
If they had intended to come out, they would certainly have made some preparation therefor; but Allah was averse to their being sent forth; so He made them lag behind, and they were told, "Sit ye among those who sit (inactive)."
-
If they had come out with you, they would not have added to your (strength) but only (made for) disorder, hurrying to and fro in your midst and sowing sedition among you, and there would have been some among you who would have listened to them. But Allah knoweth well those who do wrong.
-
Indeed they had plotted sedition before, and upset matters for thee, until,- the Truth arrived, and the Decree of Allah became manifest much to their disgust.
-
Among them is (many) a man who says "Grant me exemption and draw me not into trial." Have they not fallen into trial already? and indeed Hell surrounds the Unbelievers (on all sides).
-
If good befalls thee, it grieves them; but if a misfortune befalls thee, they say, "We took indeed our precautions beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.
-
Say "Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us He is our protector" and on Allah let the Believers put their trust.
-
Say "Can you expect for us (any fate) other than one of two glorious things- (Martyrdom or victory)? But we can expect for you either that Allah will send his punishment from Himself, or by our hands. So wait (expectant); we too will wait with you."
-
Say "SPEND (for the cause) WILLINGLY OR UNWILLINGLY NOT FROM YOU WILL IT BE ACCEPTED for ye are indeed a people rebellious and wicked."
b. and they spend for the cause unwillingly.
- THE ONLY REASONS WHY THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS ARE NOT ACCEPTED ARE THAT THEY REJECT ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER THAT (A) THEY COME TO COMMITMENT (OF FIGHTING) WITHOUT EARNESTNESS; AND (B) THEY OFFER CONTRIBUTIONS UNWILLINGLY.
THERE'S NO PRAYER IN THE PREVIOUS TEN VERSES. IT'S ALL ABOUT FIGHTING. I don't how "learning process" would fit into this but I think that commitments seems to be fitting like a glove.

I've read in Muhammad Asad's commentary that AL-ALAQ was probably the first revelation.. the one where the prophet is told to "read!", I think.

Peace be upon you Born Again,
I've always been taught that it was the first revelation . But you're right I guess, cos the only proof I got for such a claim is the hadiths. Sorry I think I got a lot more to forget
Yes, I remind myself as I remind you. We all have a lot to UNlearn.
Regarding the verrses you gave, 945 is the verse you must take into consideration, it is ONLY those who do not trust in the God and have doubt that ask for exemption. Why do they doubt? Because they do not maintain the PROCESS(salaat) of enlightenment. They do not WEIGH EVIDENCE to get to the truth in order to remove doubt. So then we get to the last verse you posted;
Here's how I understand it
(954) And nothing prevented/prohibited them that their expenses/expenditures surely be accepted/received from them, except that they rejected with The God, and with His messenger and they do not come (to) the process(alsalata) except while they are lazy, and they do not spend except while they are hating.
If we use commitment, then we must see that the person DID keep the commitment, although lazily, they STILL KEPT the commitment.
But when we see that it is the PROCESS of enlightenment, you cannot become enlightened if you approach the PROCESS(salaat) lazily, because the info will not penetrate, you will just be going through the motions.
Again, the key is verse 945, it is ONLY those who reject the God and have DOUBT who ask for exemption, the solution is not in doing chores, the solution is ENLIGHTENMENT which is attainted through MAINTAINING THE PROCESS(salaat) which then allows you to bring forth purification(zakaat) because you have wisdom which will remove corrupt info.
NOW you are ready to fight! D

Salaam hlatif
Salaam all,
Is it that the Salaat is a commitment? or is it that the Salaat is the commitment to perform Salaat?
Hussein
Which sura do you mean Hlatif, 96th or 9th ?

9609 Seest thou one who forbids
9610 A slave when he (turns) to COMMIT?
9611 SEEST THOU IF HE (Prophet) IN ON (the road of) GUIDANCE?
9612 OR ENJOINS REIGHTEOUSNESS?
9613 Seest thou if he (the one who forbids) denies (Truth) and turns away? There's a bad guy here who doesn't believe in Allah and forbids his slave to perform his rituals? I don't think so. Nobody can forbid you doing your prayers. You can do your ritual prayes in your home without being seen if you fear. And plus, If he prays will HE be a righteous person? Is there any guarantee for this? But if he follows closely / go towards Prophet / His deen he surely will.
As to 9th Sura; ayats from 44 to 54, they are all about fighting. I don't think just all of a sudden it would change to prayers. And this would mean that going to prayer without earnestness is a big sin like disbelieving Allah and his messenger. We can see that escaping from war IS.
3318 Verily Allah knows those among you who keep back (men) and those who say to their brethren, "Come along to us", but come not to the fight except for just a little while.
0815 O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them.
0816 If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!
- ONLY THOSE ASK THEE FOR EXEMPTION WHO BELIEVE NOT IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY, AND WHOSE HEARTS ARE IN DOUBT, so that they are tossed in their doubts to and fro.
BY THE WAY IS IT REALLY SUCH A BIG SIN TO ESCAPE FROM THE WAR? WHAT IF YOU'RE LOSING? YOU HAVE TO FIGHT UNTIL YOU DIE? OR IS IT JUST FOR PROPHET AND HIS SAHABAS? BECAUSE IF THEY DIDIN'T FIGHT ISLAM COULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY PAGANS. ANY IDEA?

Peace all,
Personally, I've understood "salaat" to be commitments/obligations/duites (well explained by Aidid Safar) and am well satisfied by the overall context in which it speaks, as natural as it gets.

Commitments/obligations/duties/routines is what we do 24/7. Learning process itself becomes a part of obligation, a commitment and a duty to learn. One doesn't learn only at dawn and/or dusk but throughout the day and/or night, hence the commitments.
Just my 2 cents.

Peace be upon you Danish,

Yes, we are always learning, but there are times when we must sit down and give FULL ATTENTION to becoming enlightened. For example, children dont just go out and get jobs and live life and naturally learn what needs to be learned, such as how to be a doctor, lawyer, etc. No.
Instead there needs to be SET TIMES when they sit down and LEARN, like school. So while it is true that one should always be learning, there is also the NEED for a PROCESS(salaat) of enlightenment when one becomes STILL and can give full concentration to the objective.
This is what is being described by "salaat". The God says not to apprach it with a mind befogged until you know what you are SAYING. This is not speaking about a 24 hour process.
Aidid is incorrect in his assessment

Peace Kyle,
Yes, we are always learning, but there are times when we must sit down and give FULL ATTENTION to becoming enlightened.
The entire mankind, male and female, including children, have their obligations and duties, day-in and day-out, whether SET TIMES and giving FULL ATTENTION or not. Learning itself is a commitment.
This is what is being described by "salaat". The God says not to apprach it with a mind befogged until you know what you are SAYING. This is not speaking about a 24 hour process.
I understand the above as a command, not a learning process at dawn and dusk only, as some understand otherwise. It is a duty, an obligation, a commitment to obey and adhere to, hence the word "salaat".
Aidid is incorrect in his assessment
He has done a marvellous job as per my understanding.
