Salamu Alaykum brothers and sisters and Ramadan Mubarak/Kareem!

I am so glad you have posed this great question Guided One.

I think you are doing the right thing by beginning the fast with a healthy breakfast (fruits, granola, smoothies, breads, cheeses as people here have suggested) and also to drink at least 1 quart of liquid if not 2 quarts if you can. For breaking the fast I also like the traditional date with some drinks of water. I usually follow that with some fruit, and then I eat a normal, though somewhat lightened, dinner as I would most days (Rice, vegetables, beans, maybe meat, breads, or corn). I try to drink at least 2 quarts of liquid at night before sleep, sometimes more if it is possible. The most important thing is to listen to your body, if you can't eat anymore, don't; if you are still hungry, try to eat a little bit. This is my general rule of thumb during the permitted times for eating and drinking during Ramadan. Insha'Allah with more years of Ramadan it will become easier, this is only my 5th Ramadan and I have noticed a dramatic change in how much easier I accustom to the fasting and how much less I eat during the rest of the year; it really has changed my metabolism for the better.

As to your other question (regarding smoking), though I do not smoke cigarettes nor do I condone their use, I agree with what others have said here, and I have gone back and fourth about this issue over the years. It is certainly not listed as being forbidden during the fast, and people smoked during the time of the Prophet, so it could have been included in there if God had wanted. That being said, I agree with others that Ramadan is a time of self-reflection and betterment, and a test of our abilities to control our mortal desires; thus, trying to slow down cigarette smoking is a noble cause, the same as trying not to swear, or helping the little bird you were telling us about. You may just want to decide where you want and are able to put your energy this Ramadan. It may not be in stopping cigarette smoking this Ramadan, or maybe it will, but insha'Allah you will continue doing good deeds.

Remember, "Lo! Allah wrongeth not even the weight of an ant; and if there is a good deed, He will double it and will give (the doer) from His presence an immense reward." 440

Bless you, and everyone on the Forum during this month. May we pray for peace and stability in our increasingly troubled world.

    Salaam.

      Eleikumu Selam,

About the bird, the bird fell out of the nest and i found the baby bird dead, what i want to do is to find what is wrong with the nest and fix it, so the next time this will not happen. Maybe i did not tell it very well, my English is not very good. I love animals so this was a shock to me, she was maybe one day old.

About smoking, i really would like to quit and as you say, best is to reduce, maybe this ramadan i will conquer my bad habit and quit if i do not smoke when fasting. It is not healthy so maybe that is why it is not mentioned in relation with fasting. Maybe smoking is something we should not do at all. And yes people smoke many years before the Quran, but is it the same tobacco? Maybe these cigarettes are many times more unhealthy than what people in that time smoked.

In the morning i also think it is best to eat smoothies and fruit and a lot of water, bread with cheese i think is also very good. In the evening beginning with light food as soup dates and water is also what i think is best. Also rice and vegetables and meat, but i see you do not mention meat. I also begin and end my days with Honey, it is my favorite food.

I think that ramadan is also about to learn about our self. When we fast we see that we do not need much. When we fasting w do not eat as much when there is no ramadan. We learn to control and food and water we see as special, something given by Allah to us. How many in this world do not eat and go to sleep hungry. I watched several years ago, how a African mother cooks her own sandals and tells her kids, wait the food has to cook, and they wait and wait, till they fall a sleep. This water boiling with some leather in it is a trick she uses to get her children to go to sleep and it is very sad that a lot of people are hungry in this world. I thank God for all the good things He has given me and that i am not hungry and thirsty. Ramadan is a special time and we should also help others if we can.

Most of us think the same about ramadan and that is nice.

      Peace

I find it is a bit counterproductive to eat "a lot" after finishing the fast, kind of missing the purpose with it.

It is not possible to eat a lot, that is why Muslims mostly begin with some dates and water. Maybe a few hours later they can eat more, but in the beginning it is not possible to eat much.

I agree. I'm trying to have moderation at night without overindulging myself, as I have sadly been doing the last few weeks. /

I read your post and it said when breaking your fast, so if you mean overall than write overall. Also it is not possible to eat a lot even overall. You get satisfied with less food than normal- Did you ever fast?

I have tried skipping breakfast and it has been difficult, I feel more lethargic, lightheaded and weak...
It was a suggestion by MOF something about self-control...blah blah
Allah has shown me that MOF's idea is dumb and compromising. I had to leave work early today...
There is a reason why Allah says to eat to your satisfaction, we have work and occupation prolonged throughout the day and facing it on an empty stomach is dangerous...

Don't listen to MOF eat as much as you hunger for folks until the thread white becomes clear from the thread black of dawn.
You are fasting essentially for 18-20 hours that is plenty of self-control!!

By the way, how long before sunrise does everyone get up to eat breakfast?

I do not sleep at night and i eat whole night and i try to sleep as long possible when it is daytime, but tomorrow i have work to do and in the morning i have business to do, so i will not sleep at night and do my business and when i come back i will go and sleep some hours. If you do not work, than best is to stay awake and eat and read Quran.

Selam sister, Allah tells us to fast, no eating and drinking and no sex ( from first light that we see before sunrise till darkness of the night, after sunset when the darkness comes ). I think that fasting should be taken serious and this is from Quran, you should not feel guilty about this Peace

Do you even realize how disrespectful the second clause is? smh

Just like Hp Tech this is disrespectful, i think you should keep your comments to yourself, what are you saying that we the ones who do fast have no sense? We only follow what Allahs commandments. Do you want that we abandon fasting like you Christians? Also why are you writing on this thread, it is about what you eat when you fast? Not if you fast or not. I asked you already ones do you fast and you did not answer, so now you did with this post.
