      Peace,

To my knowledge it is appropriate and does not contradict with any commands in the Scripture.

        Salaam Free,

        Behind Men!?
        I don't get it!
I thought that that woman Imam was standing in front of the men not behind them.

i don't get the "behind men" comment either............if you mean leading men or a mixed group in prayer i'm all for it............i haven't stepped inside a masjid in a few yrs now but i never was cool with the idea of seperate entrances for men and women, women being forced to the back of the room or into a seperate room or worse, outside in the heat, dampness or cold; reminds me of the civil rights struggle in the USA with the "colored" & "white" drinking fountains, entrances, etc. i pray Allah Blesses sister Amina Wadud and hope more sisters will come forward to take the role as imams.

            Paz,

I see nothing wrong with a woman leading prayer.

I do see however, misogynist men on the internet who are having a fit because a woman led prayer in New York.

The problem seems to be cultural. Their cultures are so ingrained in patriarchial brainwashing that they cannot fathom a woman having any sort of authority or any role in "Religious gatherings" beyond just attending, and sitting quietly behind the men.

What's the big deal? To me, nothing at all. I hope she continues to lead prayer and more people accept it and that God willing, this idiotic sexist mindset will fade away.

We women are human beings, not property to be pushed aside or hushed. Perhaps those sexist males feel threatened by strong women.

By the way, when I say sexist males, by no means am I referring to all men. I am referring to men who are against women leading prayer, or praying with men in mosques etc. and who feel women should stay home, shut up, cook and clean and spit out babies!

The way prayer is led is never discussed in the Quran and is clearly left open to the people and the society. I don't see whats wrong about a woman leading a prayer.
