What are your understandings on surah 24,verse 35?
-
Here is my footnote for the verse in the upcoming The Quran A Reformist Translation
024035 This example highlights some of the main characteristics of the Quran. God is the source of enlightenment (light). The Quran radiates God's message (lamp). Though it is protected with a mathematical code, it has a transparent language (glass), reflecting a small portion of divine knowledge (radiant planet). Its message is universal; not limited with any language, race, or geography (neither of the east nor of the west). Those with open eyes may get its message even without showing much effort (gives off light even if not touched by fire). It has meaning inside meaning, message inside message (light upon light). Receiving its message is a blessing and its teacher is God Himself (God guides whomever/whoever wish(es) to His light). The word nur (light), in normative case, occurs 33 times and is never used in plural from in the Quran, while its antonym is always used in its plural word, zulumat (darks), in 23 occurrences, and never in singular form. This implies singularity of the source of truth, which is God, and diversity of the sources of falsehood, which could be Satan, polytheist clergymen, ignorance, peer pressure, wrong choices, acquired weaknesses and addictions, etc.
According to the Bible, God created the light first (Genesis 13). Light is also used as a metaphor for divine enlightenment or instruction (Psalms 119105; Isaiah 820; Matthew 416; Matthew 516; John 535). God is described as "the Father of lights" (James 117). The Bible and its appendices use the light metaphor for many creatures too, such as John the Baptist (John 535), Jesus (Luke 232; John 17-9), his disciples, (Matthew 514), and angles (2Corinthians 1114).

GOD thus explains His revelations for you, that you may understand.
The Most Gracious.
Teacher of the Quran.GOD is the light of the heavens and the earth. The allegory of His light is that of a concave mirror behind a lamp that is placed inside a glass container. The glass container is like a bright, pearl-like star. The fuel thereof is supplied from a blessed oil-producing tree, that is neither eastern, nor western. Its oil is almost self-radiating; needs no fire to ignite it. Light upon light. GOD guides to His light whoever wills (to be guided). GOD thus cites the parables for the people. GOD is fully aware of all things.
GOD is Lord of those who believe; He leads them out of darkness into the light. As for those who disbelieve, their lords are their idols; they lead them out of the light into darkness - these will be the dwellers of Hell; they abide in it forever.
With it, GOD guides those who seek His approval. He guides them to the paths of peace, leads them out of darkness into the light by His leave, and guides them in a straight path.
He is the One who helps you, together with His angels, to lead you out of darkness into the light. He is Most Merciful towards the believers.

i was thinking about this the other day,and i came to some thought, allah knows best,of this verse, and it could have been explaining the light bulb technology?
a glass container,pearl-like "round"
the "fuel" is an oil neither eastern, nor western.the metal inside the bulb comes for the exploting stars away from earth as we know, and, needs no fire to ignite.
light upon light? there is light, and electric one is light upon light that already there naturally.
it could be? it could mean that too also? more than one meaning?allah knows best.

Salam to all, I'm glad you're discussing this ayat, because it's one of the most important ayats for the mankind. It's also one of the most beautiful ayats to read/listen/hear.
Before telling anything about it, I'd like you to ask yourselves, what I'm sure in is the humanity enslaved?
I know that the humanity is enslaved and we're in much worse situation then Bani Israel in Moosa's a.s. time.
Who enslaved us? Magicians, same as Bani Israel. But, let's talk about nice thingsThis ayat is called Ayat-un-Noor and the whole surah is called An-Noor also. The surah is starting with something which most of us are skipping to read/accept. In it is said that this sura is OBLIGATORY and in it are CLEAR AYATS for our ZIKR. This mean, besides all, that all what is said in this surah is CLEAR to anybody. There's nothing "mystical" in this surah, in its ayats. Please, remember this, it's very important.
On the other hand, most of the people are not doing what was prescribed of rules in this surah (they should be obligatory to all of us) and they're taking verses as allegory, something mystical. Are we believers in the Qur'an? Are we reading it? Allah swt knew what we'll do, He knows best, but I see this starting ayat as His Knowledge about what will happen with this surah.
According to 2401 verse 2435 should be clear to all and we should use it as a ZIKR (reminder). It's said again in 2435
"And Allah presents examples for the people" (mankind) (Sahih international)
His examples are for the whole mankind, and in this verse is one of them. This example should be understood by the whole mankind, it's not just for believers. Keep this in mind while we see His example of His Light.
Accepting from anybody/anything besides Allah swt is shirk, no matter what is it about. It's narrated that Muhammad Mustafa sawa told if something comes to you from me and you find it in Allah's Kitab then take it, if you don't find it then leave it. I've found this narration as truth, because it's what Qur'an is telling to us. I'm not a hadith follower and I'm not accepting anything I haven't understood from Kitab (I hope so). I noticed also that most of the people who were called "Qur'anists" are rejecting the hadith, but they're accepting other informations, much worse. This is how we all are enslaved, by magicians called scientists. Most of us are accepting science as truth and they're doing shirk, even w/o any knowledge about it. I'll try to explain that in this example.
If we wanna understand any ayat we should understand it's words first. Accepting meanings of the words without thinking about them is wrong and "dalal" (ayat 0107).
So, before even thinking about this ayat we have to know the following words
- noor
- mishkat
- misbah
- zujajat
- kawkab
- sharqiyyat
- gharbiyyat
There're a few more, but we can talk about them with these. We can find in ayats that many of the prophets pbut told they didn't know something and we also should know that Qur'an was revealed during 23 years, so it's nothing bad in "I don't know", it's much better then talking nonsences or even worse doing shirk in accepting what we don't have knowledge about.
We'll talk about "noor" at the end.
-
mishkat - this word is not easy to understand.
We can find form I verb from this root in 1285 where Ya'qoob as (Israel) is complaining to Allah swt. We should notice that Ya'qoob as turned away from His sons and was talking to Allah swt privatelly, as they were not there.
And in form VIII verb where some woman was complaining. Since it's form VIII verb we should know that it's reflexive form and this, as I know, should mean that this woman was complaining about Allah swt to Muhammad sawa, but Allah swt knows best. I see this as she didn't understand how Allah's Law can contain "zihar", which here husband done (he told her that she's - as - his mother, and divorced her). What is interesting to notice is that Allah swt told that He can hear them. This is a clue to understand mishkat.
Anyways, we should understand that the verbs used are for complaining, but due to Allah's words that He hear them both, we can understand that this action is "private".
Mishkat should mean the place for this action and it should be a place where we can have our privacy, where we can be alone with Him, for example. This can be "niche" if it's some private part of house, for example. But, it can't be understood as any special part of the house, specially built for this, because it's not what we can found in two mentioned ayats. It can be any place for private talk, for example. -
misbah - is what is inside mishkat. Since this word is used 2 more times in the Qur'an (4112, 675) and twice in this ayat, it won't be too hard to understand it. In other two occurancies it's used in its plural form and in both cases it's about "lamps in the nearest Sky" (as-sama'i ad-dunya). We could understand that this misbah is one of these, "lamps in the nearest Sky".
-
zujajat - this word is used only in this ayat. It's common translation is "glass", but it's meaning is "to cast or trow a thing from oneself (as spear is trowing)". This is why it's understood as glass mostly, because glass is reflecting the light. Reading this ayat over and over and thinking about it, we should conclude zujajat = mishkat, or mishkat contains zujajat, because misbah is in both of them. We'll see what it is later. But, we should know that zujajat is what is radiating light, with which Allah's Noor is compared.
-
kawkab - this word is understood as "star" or "planet" mostly, but since "star" is "najm" and "planet" is just sihr from scientists, we should discard both meanings. This word is used in these ayats also 676, 1204, 3706 and 8202. We should know that "masabih" (all of misbah) are "zeenati-l-kawakib" (adornment of kawkabs) and we should know that it's something what Ibrahim as saw in the Sky (676).
We should think about 6705 here. It's said that Allah swt made "rujoom" of "masabih" for shaytans. What is "rujoom"? It's understood as "projectiles", since the root "r-j-m" is understood as "stoning". Its meaning is "expelling" (which can be done by stones also), or "trowing something or somebody out". This meaning is making confusion to the people.
It's obvious that "rujoom" should be plural of singular noun "rajm" used in 1822. Rajm means "guessing" and it's obvious if we read that ayat. Guessing is "trowing opinions" ("3 men + dog", "5 men + dog". So, "rujoom" should mean "guessing" also, but in plural form, for multiple things. In this case Allah swt made masabih "guessings" for shaytans. They can just guess about them. So, we should know that shaytans (which are of men and jinn) are just guessing about masabih, which are "adornment of the nearest Sky". This is one of tools used to enslave humanity most of the humans believe in shaytans' stories about "masabih". "Masabih" are the Sun, the Moon, stars, "planets" (which are stars also) and "other objects" which are visible in the Sky.
Kawkab is a comet. -
and 7) sharqiyy and gharbiyy are mostly translated as "eastern" and "western", and these translations are not acceptable.
You probably know that there're no words for "north" and "south" used in the Qur'an. We should ask ourselves why? Is it because north and south don't exist?
You probably don't know that there're no words for "east" and "west" either! "Mashriq" and "maghrib" are recognized as these, but is it their real meaning? They can be, and they are, used with other words then the Sun (ash-Shams) and there're other similar words which are used with ash-Shams. What "mashriq" and "maghrib" mean is "the time and the place when the Sun becomes (in)visible" and this is why these are taken as east and west. People are understanding just "the place" from their meaning, but they mean both.
Anyways, sharqiyy and gharbiyy are not related to "mashriq" and "maghrib", and even they're adjectives, they're not adjectives of these words.
Nouns "sharq" and "gharb" should mean "start of (in)visibility of something", and the adjective should describe some noun with this meaning. But, what if it's told that something is not starting to be visible nor invisible? We can talk about this with "noor". -
noor - what is light?
There's a man who is called "Mu'allimu-l-Awwal" (The First Teacher) by ALL of the best Muslim scientists and thinkers, during The Golden Muslim Period (about 8-13th century ad). This man was a Greek, Aristotle. Before him pagan Greeks thought that the eyes are radiating some objects (atoms) and this is how we see. He thought them, besides other things, that we're receiving the light as waves and it's how we see.
Light as wave was accepted by all of the people till "the father of slavery" - Newton. He reformed atomist theory and told that the light is made of a small particles. There were many of real scientists which proved that Newton was wrong, and the light cannot be made of particles, but at the end humanity accepted theory that the light is wave and particles same time. This is one of the most stupid theories, but theories, assumptions and opinions are what made most of us slaves.
If you believe in atoms and don't wanna challenge and change your opinion, please don't read further.
We know for sure that the visible light (or what we call just light) is just a small part of all existing light (electromagnetic radiation). Visible light has its frequency and wave length (and all other properties of wave) and this is why we see colors, for example. Since the light is a wave, there should be something between any of two waves of light. This is understood mostly as darkness, which is half of truth.
There's a light with longer wave length then visible and it's known as infrared light (heat, for example), microwaves and radio waves. There's a light with shorter wave length then visible and it's known as UV light, X rays and gama rays.
We should notice that darkness is not in this scale, but we were told that we can't see darkness. It's truth that we can't see it with our eyes, but we can't see most of the light with our eyes. But, Allah swt is telling us about darkness on many places... what about it? Does darkness exist? Yes, it exists. As wave length increases light is becoming darkness. When it reach unlimited wave length, light becomes darkness. This means that "the distance" between two wave length is so big that the next wave will not reach the target. This is ultimate darkness, but any of told light has darkness in it.What this ayat (2435) is telling us is about the opposite "kind of light". It's the light with 0 wave length, light which has no waves, no darkness in it. It's the light "which is not starting to be visible nor invisible", no oscilations in it, no blinking.
This is Allah swt - The Light of the Heavens and the Earth. The Light which always exists, The Light without any darkness in it.
What is about its example, comparision, in this ayat?
We should remember that His examples are for the whole mankind, so this should be something which any man can understand/experience. What is it? Which light has no oscilations in it and we all can see it? It's daylight. Example in this ayat is describing daylight. It's nooru 'ala noor, as Allah swt is Nooru 'ala Noor, Noor with no darkness.
We should know that the day(light) exists independant of the Sun(light).
It's hard to accept the truth, as it was hard to accept the truth for Bani Israel, because we're enslaved. But trust no one, except Allah swt and those with Sultan from Him.
If we don't discard informations from shaytans and/or fasiqoon we'll be enslaved forever.
Allah's bless and salam.
-
Daylight exists independently from the Sun?
How can it be ? Doesn't sun give light ?
According to the Qur'an (and Bible also) Allah swt created night, day, then the Sun and the Moon.
There're many proofs for this, but I'll use this ayat. As I explained, daylight is constant, without oscilations. If we look at daylight (which is blue and white) we won't see any oscilations, but if we look at the sunlight (especially if we're looking directly in the Sun) we'll see "sunlight's frequency", oscilations.
We should also notica that the word for day is "nahaar" and there's only one noud with same root used in the Qur'an and it's "nahar", which means "river". We should ask why is this, what they have in common? If we know that they share same color and properties (both are liquids) it should become more clear to us.
But, we should also know that the Sun is day's ayat (sign). It's good to look around us and to think, Allah swt is telling us to think about all in/on the Earth, the Skies and between them, and in us. It seems we have no time for that. We could also read what great Muslim thinkers were telling about this, and other believers of ahl-ul-Kitabi.
I hope this can help.
Allah's bless and salam.

Brother Aladin
So according to the ayats that say that God swt was on his throne and his throne was above waters to test us, to see who is best in deeds among humans, does it mean that God is not everywhere and that he is above waters on a throne? So is it that's why the sky is blue ? There are waters above us?

His Throne and all about His "qualities" is hidden (ghayb) for our senses. They're hidden even from telling about them, and all we can tell is only what Allah swt told about it, no more no less. I don't wanna talk about this.
For waters... yes, there're waters above for sure, and there're rivers also. What we really see? We should know more about the light (noor) and about the vision. I think we're infected with science virus and our definitions of things (names of things) are not correct.
It's interesting you said "above us", as it is normal... It's normal, btw.Allah's bless and salam.
-
Blessings to you too
What did you mean by this word ? )
If we're on some magic ball there should be no "above", it should be "outside".
It's interesting that shaytan la promised to come to us from before us, after us, our left and our right sides. (717) He can't come from above? What is coming from above is blessed (mubarak).Allah's bless and salam.
