Ghayb
-
I see that it means neither of those.
-
You don't need to come up with a definiton of the ghayb...it was given in the Quran in very clear and simple example.
They will say "Three, the fourth is their dog." And they say "Five, the sixth is their dog," guessing at what they do not know. And they say "Seven, and the eighth is their dog." Say "My Lord is fully aware of their number, none know them except for a few." So do not argue regarding them except with proof, and do not seek information regarding them from anyone.
In the above verse, the ghayb was translated to the red part, however even without such translation we can tell what the example is implying. I personally don't see any need to dig into this verse any further.

My dear brother, to understand any of ayats we have to, at least, read it all. If you read its start you'll notice that it's about the FUTURE. Allah swt is telling us that some people IN THE FUTURE will say these words, and they will guessing IN THE FUTURE (rejmen bi-l-ghaybi).
After your words in red comes "And they WILL say...", so it's about the future also, but "guessing" (rejm) is not used. Will they guess or they'll know?
Do you think that words "mira'un zahirun" means "proof" as in your translation?People think that they're wise and others are fools, so they know that there were 7 young men and their dog and they're taking this ayat as a proof. But, they're forgetting that only a few know about them and this will stay as said (only a few will know about them).
Allah swt didn't tell that some other people will say 7+1, same people will guessing and they'll all be in the future. So, guessing is 3+1 and 5+1, but guessing is also 7+1.
Ghayb is not "what they do not know". But if you're happy with that understanding try to check it in all other ayats, if you're of truthful ones.
Allah's bless and selam.

The ghayb can be anything and on any matter. The ghayb is that which God knows and we don't, that which God's keeps for himself and of which He gives us whatever He wills and withholds whatever He wills.
Salaam
Yes, dear waliyyat, but that is what we know as "the future things/events".
Ghayb is not, for example, what is happening now or in the past and we don't know about it. Ghayb is only what will happen and we can't have the knowledge about it. Only some can know about it, if Allah swt tells them, as, for example, Allah's 'abd from surah Kehf, one who was with Moosa a.s. and people are saying that his name was Hidr.I've found interesting and useful, the knowledge about this word. And I'd like if you read all the ayats with it and think about all of them. I hope Allah swt will give you khayr from His satisfaction.
Allah's bless and selam.

You came with some false translation of ayat you mentioned, claiming that the words "bi-l-ghayb" means "what they don't know". If you translate it back to Qur'anic lisan, you'll get other words then "bi-l-ghayb". So, what you said that what "was given in the Quran in very clear and simple example" is truth, but what you understood from it is not truth, obviously.
As I said, I have nothing against your understanding, I just wanted all of you to re-think of what you accepted as truth with no real proof, but false ones from tefsirs, lexicons and other opinions. What comes from opinions is that, for example, jinn are ghayb, and angels are ghayb, and many other real and unreal things people are talking about are ghayb also. But Allah swt never said that anything of these is ghayb. He said clear what is ghayb and it's very important for us to understand/know this, otherwise we can't be amongs mutteqoon. It's not something "less important", this is one of the most important words for us, believers.
As you all know mutteqoon believe in GHAYB! So, if we don't believe in ghayb, can we be amongs mutteqoon? Can we believe in ghayb if we don't know what it is? Is there any belief without the knowledge (which is only 'ind-Allahi).
Allah's bless and selam.

Then you are doomed!
No guidance for you by Him by the shadows nopeI prefer not ghayb

@Aladin,Furqan
Both of you insist that it means "future", do you realise "the future" is included in the "unseen"/"unknown"/"beyond our knowledge"/"hidden" ? Not only the future but also the past, the present and everything that happens elsewhere. whether a place, or inside a creature's mind, or another time, beyond this world too.
5116 And God will say "O Jesus, son of Mary, did you tell the people to take you and your mother as gods other than God?" He said "Glory to you, I cannot say what I have no right of. If I had said it then You know it, You know what is in my self while I do not know what is in Your self. You are the Knower of the GHAYB."
978 Did they not know that God knows their secrets, and their private counsel, and that God is the Knower of ALL THE GHAYB
3448 Say, "My Lord causes the truth to prevail. He is the Knower of ALL THE GHAYB.",
23 Those who believe in the GHAYB, and hold the contact prayer, and from Our provisions to them they spend.
1822 They will say "Three, the fourth is their dog." And they say "Five, the sixth is their dog," guessing at THE GHAYB. And they say "Seven, and the eighth is their dog." Say "My Lord is fully aware of their number, none know them except for a few." So do not argue regarding them except with proof, and do not seek information regarding them from anyone.
P.S yesterday I made a very different answer to this, as I was making the last edits, the electricity shut down. I'm glad it did.

When I'm talking/writing and something unexpected happened, I stop to think about my intentions too.
Yes, "future" is included in "unseen/unknown...", but "insan" can't mean "all of creations", just because it's included in it. Insan means human only, as ghayb means "future" only. But, no Qur'anic word can be translated to any of languages with its complete meaning, so this word "future" is a poor translation I used just as something to think about. It doesn't contain whole meaning of "el-ghayb".
But, importance of the meaning of this word is very high for many reasons. I already told one, for mutteqoon, but I'd like to point one more.
If mutteqoon (highest of believers) believe in ghayb and if it is something unable to understand (which is not) then their belief would be superstition. So, ones who're talking that it means something "unreachable for human mind" they're talking that highest level of belief is superstition, which can't be, if we're "reading" ayats and thinking about them. Thinking/intellect/mind/reasoning... are mentioned in the Qur'an more often then belief, because they stand before it, as an entrance to belief. There can't be no belief w/o understanding.
This is why I never accepted ghayb as its common translation/explanation.Also, Cerberus, present and past are included into the meaning of "shehid" and His Name "Esh-Shehid".
Allah's bless and selam.

Brother, take a deep breath and read the verses I provided. That is the understanding right there.
I'm not saying it may not mean "future" but I'm surely saying it is not limited to "future" as you clearly stated in your previous posts. I have provided verses to look at. As for me there is no issue and therefore I have nothing more to add.
p.s if you are interested to know, I wrote something similar to your response, before the electricity shutdown lol...

The first characteristic features of Mutta'qeena is they heartily accept and believe in the presence of the Unseen?not in their sight their Creator Allah the Exalted.
