A straightforward example of the "Soul"

3942 God seizes the souls at the time of their death; and for those that have not died, during their sleep. He then keeps those that have been overtaken by death, and He sends the others back until a predetermined time. In that are signs for a people who will think.
The verse above in chapter 39 speaks of the "Nafs" (commonly known as "soul" at both time of death and sleep.
You might think that the alarm clock wakes you up or that you wake up automatically at a certain time (scientifically the "biological clock" and sometimes you wake up before because you want to pee, sometimes way after. But, perhaps one day the alarm will keep on ringing and you won't wake up at all.
Now to go back on topic, the "soul" is the one thing you lose when you're sleeping (scientifically at a certain advanced stage of sleeping). You lose the ability to hear, see, think. You lose the control of your senses and you lose the control of the body you have. Your body, including all of its organs start to work by themselves, but then again, it is God who sustains all that.
Once you wake up, for any reason, the Soul is "activated" or put back in your body for you to control it and to live in this material world with the body as a "container", but still both the body and the soul makes your existence, at least in this life. Otherwise you'd be conscious wherever you were outside your body in your sleep.

What if the ayat refers to the state of coma which is much closer to that of death than sleep is. While sleeping we still can hear or move, although only subconciously. The state of coma is very different, in it concious is absent and also body activities like moving etc. Only the estrictly necessary for keeping alive the body, thus closer to death than the state of sleep.
Maybe the ayat is sending a message about euthanasia... hail

According to my sis, this ayat is talking about the single hormone responsible for both sleep and death. She said this is a recent finding in biology.
The verse speaks for itself , whereas the hormone discovery could be just a tiny bit of the mechanism (or even not at all). It is safe to say that the "discovery" can be linked to the verse rather than saying that the verse is about that one discovery.

Very intresting this aya.
In spite of all the common conceptions that the body dies and the soul continues but without a body, in fact what the aya says is that it is the soul that dies, goes back to God and then we will be borught back. So it would seem that not the ody needs a soul but the soul needs a body in order to be alive.

I agree. I feel the ayat is giving us an example of death and resurrection. In some places of the Quran, the disbelievers think resurrection is a joke. The ayat is telling us to focus on how we almost look dead in our sleep, yet do wake up. Same goes for the coma and out of the body experience. One of the most interesting things about Allah is that he always keeps all the signs scattered around us to pick up. I just love this thing about him.

anbody know the state between sleep and awake... i mean on the edge...
its called the switching stage... half sleepy half awake.. usually it happen when you are tired and reading something or watching something on tv suddenly you feel dizzy... you awake again ... this process is called switching stage...
there are also some very interesting theories regarding that stage...
