-
peace,
"Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, most of them know not."
Could you also please exlain why in some verses it says that mountains move and in some it says that they r immovable??
The verse you seem to be referring to is 2761
http//corpus.quran.com/wordbyword.jsp?chapter=27&verse=61#(27611)The word in question is "rawasiya" and can have various shades of meaning from mountains / firm mountains / immovable mountains, research more at http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm
Ra-Siin-Ya = to be firm, stable, immoveable, still, lat at anchor, moor (ship), come to pass. rawasiya (pl. of rasiyatun, f. of rasin for rasiyin) - things which are firmly and immovably fixed, mountains. arsa (vb. 4) - to fix firmly. mursan - that which is fixed with regard to time or place.
rasa vb. (1) pcple. act. f. 3413
mursa n.f. 7187, 1141, 7942
rawasi n.f. (pl. of rasiyah) 133, 1519, 1615, 2131, 2761, 3110, 4110, 507, 7727
arsa vb. (4) perf. act. 7932
LL, V3, p 252, 253 ## http//ejtaal.net/aa/#q=rsy
Seems like the translator in the translation you are using interpreted it as "mountains immovable" which is a theoretically possible translation but not the only option.

Could you also please exlain why in some verses it says that mountains move and in some it says that they r immovable??
peace brother,
quran use a word when i address all those references..
for the word its better to interpret it as stablizer , anything that hold a firm grip .. in case of earth the mountains along with force of gravity & lot of other things give us a grip on multiple ways and there are things in earth that give a grip to mountains too and grip upon grip until the bottom on earth core.. even magnetic field is a kind of GRIP..
i was watching the documentary on mountains in which the researcher was telling us how mountains provide us a safe-guard against the violent winds if mountains were not there the wind will make it impossible for us to move..
at one occassion this phenomenon is well described in this verse..
786 Did We not make the earth a resting ground?
787 The mountains as pegs/stakes/anchors?the question mark will take us more deep for understanding what is pegs/stakes lets cross reference it with other verses
quran use this same root two more times reffering to this thingie3812 And before them denied the truth, the people of Noah, ?Aad and Pharaoh of the firm stakes
8910 And Pharaoh with the pyramids/stakes/anchors?In Geology, the phenomenon of ?folding? is a recently discovered fact. Folding is responsible for the formation of mountain ranges. The earth?s crust, on which we live, is like a solid shell, while the deeper layers are hot and fluid, and thus inhospitable to any form of life. It is also known that the stability of the mountains is linked to the phenomenon of folding, for it was the folds that were to provide foundations for the reliefs that constitute the mountains. Geologists tell us that the radius of the Earth is about 3,750 miles and the crust on which we live is very thin, ranging between 1 to 30 miles. Since the crust is thin, it has a high possibility of shaking. Mountains act like stakes or tent pegs that hold the earth?s crust and give it stability
BTW according to your understanding of moving, if mountains moves like we human move from one place to another then you will see mount everest and K2 from the ranges of himalaya & karakoram to america which is not the case as you clearly see..
so moving depend on how you perceive the movement of things.. like a tiny seed result in a big tree.. (its also a movement)..
now look at this verse in which both (mountain) & (stablizers) used by author
7932 The mountains He fixed firmly.
DR Frank Press, who was the President of the Academy of Sciences in the USA for 12 years and was the Science Advisor to former US President Jimmy Carter. In this book he illustrates the mountain in a wedge-shape and the mountain itself as a small part of the whole, whose root is deeply entrenched in the ground.According to Dr. Press, the mountains play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth.
hope this help
God bless you -

Mountains immovable in the sense, its usefulness are multiple and never goes that easily for people living near those. These mountains were the reason for the rains/rivers
and its stability/immobility helps people setup/construct their houses above the firm earth surrounding it and gives the protection as caves those ancient people relied upon. -
imrankhawaja Could u quote where exactly Dr Press said that mountains r stabilizers? I cant find it anywhere and people on forums who have the cope of the book "Earth" also couldnt find this fact
look at the links ..
https//www.livescience.com/6595-depth-himalayan-mountain-roots-revealed.html
https//www.geolsoc.org.uk/Education-and-Careers/Ask-a-Geologist/Continents-Supercontinents-and-the-Earths-Crust/Mountain-Rootsdnt worry if you did not find that book on internet then go to the library and try to search by this approach
Earth, Press and Siever, p. 435. ( thats the reference what i study in one of the article ages ago) i did not read his book by myself ..RED did i use a word "fact" anywhere

well forget about frank press just look for yourself that mountains are stablizers or not? two links i just posted you at top..

From this root come others associated with movement but controlled movement, ike a boat at anchor or tied to the bolt in the port. It is a means of keeping movement controlled so that it does not go out of hand, that is becomes catastrofic.
A ship at anchor moves, but does not move out of control. So mountains move, but they recover their balance or rather they keep the balance throughout the movement.
Salaam

I read the links but i cant see where its written that mountains r stabilizers
mountians are mountians, stablizers are stablizers..
mountians works like stablizers/anchors/pegs/roots... -
Why in Quran it says that mountains are immovable when they do move as the result of tectonics??
look at your question once again..
when did you see any mountain travel from one location to another?
you need to understand your question first what you are actualy thinking about the movement of mountians.. ?do you believe mountians physically travel from himalaya to america due to tectonics?
-
No, but they do move a bit by tectonics.
are tectonics and mountains are same thing?
oh yeh mountains do smoke too by lava
-
Im not saying they are the same thing! Im saying that mountains do move due to tectonics
why mount everest is still in nepal instead of moving to india or china from last many million years?
