Plastic surgery. Permitted or not?
-
Salam to all,
I was wondering what the Quran says about plastic surgery? I know there has always been a debate on this. Can anyone produce any ayahs from teh Quran that may address the issue of changing one's physical features? Or just mention what your position is on the issue is. I know the Quran does not speficially address this issue but are there areas in the Quran where one can make a correlation to this issue? I'm interesting in knowing not just about corrective surgery (i know there's nothing wrong with that, ie. be it as a result from an accident, etc) but plastic surgery in general. Thank you.

Hi
I don't think there is anything specific about it, but I guess it depends on the following
if it is needed to avoide some other risk, I can't think of an example as I don't know what sort of plastic surgery they can do, but I may imagine if a very fat human who suffer from hardship to move around due to the extra weight carried which may cause damage to the feet as well some other issues like heart problems, then if there is a plastic surgury that can help here, I say why not?
but if it is just to change what Allah created for the sake of the looks, then I say it is NO NO, based on a verse in the Quran condemning humans who change what Allah has created, I have to find it though
Allah knows best
Peace

Peace all
difficult subject coz open to so many different interpretation - but dont we know that song...
i just want to remind people born with grave malformation can also be born that way without obvious reason. our creator made them come to earth that way...wouldnt be be allowed to help through surgery ?each case is different and unique.
about not changing gods creation . this verse always made me think of egypt and the dam they built to stop the nile from flowing and overflowing the nile valley once a year now the earth is gettting to salty for culture and the valley being dry now, land before only used for agriculture is being built upon... and egypt has only little good land, is mostly desert - not to talk about the terrible thread such a dam can be
there we humans should definitly not have touched gods creation

Anything that Allah did not prohibit is thus allowed.

Peace Gold84,
I would think it to be logical and personal if one is suffering from an appearence that would make it hard for him/her to go into public or to live a normal life as one should. I also think if it just for vain purposes then of course not.
Weight lose is not one of the reasons in my opinion.
I think this is a poor reason for surgery. This can be corrected by diet and exercise. If this person would probably move more and eat less then weight would most likely not be a factor. Some cases are genetics but most of the time it is due to poor eating habits
and not enough exercise.Something such as a cleft lip or palate needs emergency attention, for the person may have trouble with eating , drinking and speech.
I personally, would invite the idea of plastic surgery, if I had an accident or defect that could be corrected to make everyday more easier to deal with. I would be thankful that God has given man the intelligence and technology to change lives for the betterment of humanity.
But like most things it can be misused beyond its purpose.
I guess it all should depend on motives as with many other situations. Is there a hidden motive??? Good or bad? Example Why do people need big breast and buttock implants, male implants or lip enhancers? Why do people need Botox? To look younger or sexier would be my answer.
Motive should give you the answer.
Peace,
Shirley
