Fear God OR Love God

The concept of "fear" doesn't always imply the notion of being afraid. It can also mean to have a profound reverence and awe of something or someone. I think that's closer to what people mean when they say that they 'fear' God. So, in this case, many people's position would be that they fear AND love God, since the two ideas complement each other.

I think the root firstly might mean ?feel awe?, not fear. They are close in meaning, but they are not exactly the same awe and fear are 2 different things that usually get confused in our limited minds when it comes to feelings and sensations.
When watching the huge forces of the enemy the devil creates ?awe? in the hearts, and this awe would become fear and terror. Therefore, the awe deviates into fear, but it is not (awe and fear) necessary the same, if you think of it. Look at the "if you are believers" that follows, it gives the whole point.
In the case of God you feel awe, but it does not lead to fear or terror, otherwise it makes no sense. Why would we fear ?forgiveness and grace??
2268 The devil promises you poverty and orders you to immorality, while God promises forgiveness from Him and grace. God is Encompassing, Knowledgeable.
And looking at the whole Quran where we are said constantly that He is the Merciful, would a real believer feel ?terror?? Would the One and Merciful ask us to feel ?fear? when he promises understanding and justice?

2165 And from among the people are some who take other than God as equals to Him, they love them as they love God; but those who believe love God more strongly.
I find this extremely interesting if you are a believer because terror overflows your heart when you think of God and this is your concept of the Merciful, then you are a believer, ok, accepted. But you are absolutely not in a next stage of faith.

Thank you so much for reminding me, I actually read it and other replies where fear/love are mixed or come together. I have the impression you were perfectly accepting "fear" as one of the feelings for God just as "love" should be, while I was trying to say I am not veeeeeeeery sure if "fear" is, in the final analysis. I actually wanted to outline the meaning of "awe" included in the feeling of both love/fear but not being the same, thei are their posible derivate, not the same. At least not in 3175. In the other verses were "fear" appears as a translation, other roots are used (be aware, reverence, etc.)
Excuse me if i misunderstood what you wanted to express.

Fear is not in the Qur'an, what is there many times as ittaqw, To be conscious of Him, to be aware of Him. To beware tht He is Mighty, His might has no limits, and He himself does not fear antying nor there anything He can fear. So that is what it is.
If we do not intend to "cross" God, we should trust His mercy, but if we become arrogant and proud and merciless ourselves, then we should most certainly be very, very much afraid of what God can do with those arrogance and pride and mercilessness of us. Turn them against ourselves, let us feel how it is to be shown somebody's real might to harm us...
We should trust God's mercy if with our deeds we worship the Merciful, but we should indeed fear His wrath if with our deeds we worship Him by his names of power. He indeed can make for us a hell, the hell we have asked for us by bringing it into existence ourselves.
