    Peace

Numerous verses of the Book enjoin us to spend what we've been blessed with in the cause of God.
I know this include donating money but what other way can one spend in God's cause that doesn't necessarily require money.

This is importance for Muslims who are unemployed with little to no income.

To spend in God's cause in my opinion is to pour whatever you have into what you deem to be rightful.

      Everyone has time and energy.

Due to spending your time and energy in God's cause, i.e what you deem to be rightful, you get money and possessions.

And due to spending your money and possessions into what you deem to be rightful, you give money, manage money, save money, give more money.

And so on. But everything has to be made consciously. i.e in God's cause, nothing is wasted, nothing is abused. Everything flows perfectly. To make more and more conscious decisions is the goal until you become a walking consciousness.

You can also 'spend' your knowledge rightfully, and your wisdom, your advices; But you don't get none of those in the first place if you haven't spent your breath (time and energy) rightfully.

Meaning you can't spend anything if you haven't spent your breath rightfully. Because you'll have nothing.
If they can't spend money because they don't have it then naturally they'll have to spend their breath rightfully to get money. to get knowledge. to get anything you want.

Ata al zakat is to be not excessive in your everyday life, in food, sexual relations, your words and actions. It is not a tax and a far wider concept.

Sadaqa (charity) I believe can be expressed (and should) not only in financial way but as Cerberus pointed out, in a form of knowledge, experience et cetera.

            Many, some practical example
Smile, even to those who reject your employment application.. sharing your happiness to others..
Be thankful of what you have and never envy or hate those who have more than you... (or different than you)
Be happy in your humility... humility is a mandatory trait for a 'wonderful' soul...

Whatever we do may end up wrong or right to others, all our efforts could end up bad. So Live true to your self, that is God's path, each one of us has a role to play, but for guidance? yes we need to fall before the All mighty to straighten up our ego, that looks to be the actual salat, its a way to accepting our ignorance and stepping towards guidance.

6310 Give from what We have provided to you, before death comes to one of you.

Also could be in the meaning that we should give out of our resources as human beings. To use our skills or sympatices. Anything that God has given you in the best way.
We shouldn't use our skills just to get money, but also use them to do something good.
Me myself I would like to use my skills to solve the waste situation in my second country (Ghana). That I see as a way of really giving out of what God has provided for me.

                Or I could be wrong?

                Peace
