"The Three" in 9:118

..........
As to Dhul Qarnain I ask myself if he really is historical person. The name may be, like so many names in Qur'an a descriptive of his or its nature. May be it is an archetype.
Qarn is translated mostly as generation, so Qrnain would be two generations and dhul qrnain, the posesor of the two generations, or the embodyment of the two generations, those two generations referring to whatever we think more appropriate This life and the next? The believers and the unbelievers? Something else?
Even if he was a real historical figure, in the Qur'an may be used as archetypical of a set of human attitutes and behaviour.

instead of going into those technologies ,dul qarnaian/"Two Horned One" buried gog and magog some where in this world and ALLAH subhanavatala tells us they will be the first sign for the day of judgement
Verse 21.96
Until when Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descendso ,if someone able to discover this dul qarnain then that will be our first sign for the day of judgement

The day of judgment is after death. It is not while we are alive. I think that is bundantly clear from Qur'an, and dh'ul Qrnain, if you think that it is articular erson will be there as any other particulr erson. If he was one he already gave his warning.
On the other hand root alif-jim-jim, from which ya'juj and ma'juj seem to be derived in the dictionnry say this to burn, blaze, flame. As to material, hysicalmeaning of this,,we do not need to wait for new dhu'l Qrnin to come, it happens right know nd hs been haening all through hitory. Peoples are nihilted, destroyed, invaded, disopossessed, countries set ablaze, there is ya'juj and ma'juj for you. No waiting list or anything like that.

talking about dul qarnayn is beyond the scope of this thread .Some day in sha ALLAH i will make article about this and we will discuss on that thread .
i wonder what happened to the host of this thread ,tellmethethuth -----did you got the truth ? -
It is two different things.
Those three in 9.118 did not stay behind. They were left behind, it is something that was done to them. Verb II form, passive voice, completed action and a determined number, three. The preceeding aya and this one are speaking about something already done. Those three are anguished and worried about their plight and may be also about the plight of those who left them behind and the three in their anguish forget Allah not thinking of Him but only of their worry, but then realise that the only shelter is with God, so turned to Allah in their plight instead of living only for their anguish and God turns to them.
Those in 120 are mentionned in undetermined numbers as group or category of people, the verb is form V, active voice, action uncompleted and it is speaking generally referring to undetermined numbers (may be rather big numbers since it says the people of Madina and around them and the beduins, a completely different idea of the the isolatd three. And it speaks of what people may do or choose. And may be those three are mentionned so before, so those who are addressed now realise that staying behind is not as desirable a choice as they might think, and MAY BE the three are mentionned so that anybody may know that staying behind, no matter the reason, is not such a comfortable position as they might think.

Peace huruf, not two different "things" but two different groups, both with
reasons/excuses for not being with the prophet during the journey.Count noun always refer to an object, that is why they have a gender. The definite count noun three refers three known men; known to speaker and the listener.
Agreed
a perfect Quran alone solution for the ayah 9.118. Here in verse 9.120 all are included, including those three .thus Quran gives a clear picture .however ,if reader wants to know more regrading those three, he may look for the traditions which may be correct or might be wrong.
okay brother parvez mushtaq I have an idea where you are leaning here but &
peace brother hawk, hope you allright
its interesting i also think that way
it may b the people who once migrated and what make them stay/left behind because the tone of verses is saying they did something what they dnt suppose to do,so after they realise what they done ,they regret it and they did what they suppose to do.it could be anything like three of them were aware about the truth from their lord so they did not acknowledge at that time soon they realise they will not get peace at any cost they must have to face truth becoz people had fear of losing land and losing their life and only three left in town and they feel stress coz none can b dishonest with themselves so they realise its time to move
God knows best i like ur analysis
Good analysis

It was a great pleasure to be here and get some nice answers to my query. It was really helpful and now I am going to revise my study. I hope that I will understand the whole Surah easily by keeping those points highlighted by dear brothers and sisters.
May Allah always bless us with His guidance!

Peace huruf, not two different "things" but two different groups, both with
reasons/excuses for not being with the prophet during the journey.Lets take the ayahs
Verse 9.117
Allah has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhajireen and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined , and then He forgave them. Indeed, He was to them Kind and Merciful.
first group - A group from ansars/helpers who deviatedSecond group - a group of three who were left by the main group (main muslim group)
Again in verse 9.120
It was not for the people of Madinah and those surrounding them of the bedouins that they remain behind after the Messenger of Allah or that they prefer themselves over his self. That is because they are not afflicted by thirst or fatigue or hunger in the cause of Allah, nor do they tread on any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that is registered for them as a righteous deed. Indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of the doers of goodFrom this verse one can reason that prophet was on some journey and the first group deviated but i cannot reason how you came to the conclusion that even those three were not with him in that journey .further ,the verse 9.120 can be information for the future because the first group was in deviation but they were with the prophet .
Peace,
Ayat 9/118 clearly instructs the believers to "TRUST" Allah.
Those who stayed behind deeply regretted doing so!
peace
okay brother parvez mushtaq I have an idea where you are leaning here but &
Secondly how you came to the conclusion those three were not with the prophet in his journey

Salamun Alaikum, Brothers and Sisters! Can some one describe the word "The Three" (ة in Chapter 9 verse 118 without referring to any Hadith?
Salaamun brother,
I had a quick look on 9117. Found these 3 alNabi, alMuhajireen and alAnsaar.
Will check in detail later if my Allah wills.

Peace, your second group is part of my first group!

Peace, your second group is part of my first group!
peace
If so why they are being addressed separately
-
Because they are part of the first group only they stayed behind.
according to my understanding when I read 9/117-118 in context, peace
This "stayed behind" is false. They were left behind. That is what the text says. It could have said "stayed behind", if that were what was meant, but it does nto say it. It says "were left behind". So any interpretation must match that, otherwise we are arranging the text to match our own expectations.
