    There is difference between solar and lunar year. A solar year is calculated based on the movements of the sun, whereas a lunar year is based on the movements of the moon. The difference in the period between a solar year and a lunar year is called an epact. One epact is 11 days.

    And indeed We had sent Noah towards his nation;

    Whereupon he lived among them for a thousand lunar years save fifty solar years.

    For reason/in consequence of contradicting him flood seized them while they were persistently evil doers.

    Word is disambiguation for .

    I know there are what is called lunar years and solar years, but does not make sinin into lunar years, so please give a proof, not just an statement.

    It is a bit absurd to formulate something like a thousand lunar years les 50 solar years.

    Salaam

      Salam Huruf,

      It is perfect make sense if one change years to month in 105. What about ""?. Is it same as "Years"?. If yes then 1000 months minus 50 years?. That is what you want to say.

      My apology if i understood wrong.

      Thanks

        No you understood it right.

        I find this explanation to be logical and in agreement with Qur'an. I also think that God when something is extraordinary does point it out. I do not think he would have passed a person liing 1000 years or around without pointing it out. It is was a gift for Nuh he would have pointed it out.

        Salaam

          @huruf

          Isn't it not unusual way of describing some one's age?. Why did God not tell us in a simple way that Prophet Nuh lived among his people 33 years?. Also in Quran for month the Arabic word used was "" then why God used a word which is not common?

          It is not disagreement from your point out of view. Just curious that it must be a word in Arabic for 33 years.

            It depends because Arabic today is not the same as Arabic used in Al-Quran.

              @Sardar

              It is true that Arabic at the time of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) was different then current Arabic but still in the Quran no where for month God used the word "Snna". Is there any example from classical Arabic that "Sunna" is also used for month?.

              Also for my interest, do you know what kind of calendar Arabs was using at that time?. If they were not using any particular calendar then it make sense that for day they use Sun and for month, moon.

              In my opinion the word "Snna" used in the same way as the word "Yum". Yum doesn't mean a day but it could be a particular length of time, epoch. In the same way "Sunna" could be a day, month or year. It is my opinion but I could be wrong.

                Sunna? Isn't that like establishing the low or follow a path?

                  Sorry, I mean "Snna" which everyone translate as Years and not Sunnah.

                    Huruf, I understand that the "1000 months less 50 years" (Noah lived for 33.25 years) makes a lot more sense than "1000 years less 50 years" (Noah lived for 950 years). I was just seeking a justification from almarh0m for their usage of it. I do believe it to be more probable, but I have failed to see the reasoning from the Qur'an itself to support it.

                    This is why I was asking how (of the root sn nn ww, used as sanat) became 'months', and how (of the root ayn ww mm, used as m) remained 'years'. I was seeking a translation, and the different meanings, of both words, which are blatantly different, yet still translated as either 'year' or the plural 'years'.

                    May God grant you peace.

                      I think you may be you can do some more research seeking the roots int he Qur'an by means of one of the tools we have. I would like to do it but I have other heavy demands on my research time and this question is not the most pressing for me.

                      However on a first consideration,I see something tricky in the question.

                      The plural sinin behaves as if it should come from a root s-n-n while the singular sanat is considered to derive from a root s-n-w and the meaning of the roots-n-w itself (to gleam, shine, be resplendent ..) apparently does not point to anything useful except that if we cling to a meaning of time measure it would point to a solar aspect because with the sun what we can measure on plain sight and on a basic scope would be days or years, months would be far more elusive.

                      I would not dare say anything further on it without a proper study.

                      Also, in general, although mostly right, not all roots that we are given in previous literature or in tools are infallible. For different reasons some are glaringly inapropriate.

                      I wish you luck with your research which if you do it, will certainly be appreciated.

                      Salaam

                        Salamun Alaikum.

                        Does anyone here really believe that Allah ever created " Human Being" that lives for hundreds of years? Or does Allah use two words to mean exact same thing such as sanat and aam?

                        Allah and his messenger repeatedly say in AQ that sunnaTullah never change? AQ 17/77, 35/43 and 48/23. Even if Allah means Sanat = Solar years and aam as Lunar years.....the age of
                        prophet Nuh is still amount to hundreds of years as the difference between solar and lunar year is only roughly 11 days.

                        Above all that, there is no historical evidence that so far indicate that ancient human beings lived longer than their contemporary. All we need is to look at the the list of kings of ancient Egypt and sumeria which is verifiable through archaelogical find and we can see the years of each king's reign and how long each of them lived on this earth. By the way, Prophet Nuh in the Qur'an has nothing to do with Noah of The Bible, Old Testament and New testament are not The Taurat and Injil.

                        Peace

                        almarh0m
