I started wondering why the translation goes "in the name of God".
Has this well known verse anything to do with a name?

We have been rendered mindless when it comes to proper names. Proper names may be a question of merely liking the sound nowadays, but in principle they in fact ,eant and should have meant a lot. A proper name is given because of some characteristics either already there, when given through life or after death, or wishing and invoking those characteristics.
In the caseof God, names are the thing itself. The names of God which we are told in Qur'an to use for addressing him are there for something and most definitely means something. So much so that if we address somebody by a name that is not his, the person will not answer because se would not be addressing him or her.
So bismillahirahmaanirahiim is full of intention and full of meaning. We are adressing God in his qualities of rahma, shich should be the best way to address him. We are here because of those names.

Siin-Miim-Waw ( و = to be high/lofty, raised, name, attribute. samawat - heights/heavens/rain, raining clouds. ismun - mark of identification by which one is recognised. It is a derivation of wsm (pl. asma). ism - stands for a distinguishing mark of a thing, sometimes said to signify its reality.

The Name of Allah the Exalted is the recourse.
Recourse source of help or solution He to Whom a person turns for help or to solve a problem.
These three words, a preposition, a common noun and a Proper Noun constitute the first grammatical unit . It comprises of a Prepositional Phrase + Possessive Phrase.

Initiating a controlled process requires information. And the most fundamental fact about information is that it is itself preceded by the Prime Source Who is but the Living and holding Will. The Divine Discourse concatenates facts in perfect sequence and chronological order. Its first word vividly indicates at the outset about superb concatenation-consistence-contiguity and colligation in the contents of the Book in hand. This is the First scientific fact of the physical world. The creation and for created ones the initiation of the process of learning-knowledge is but the "code/name". The human memory and that of computer can save nothing without knowing or assigning a code/name to a thing-object-phenomenon.
