Verse (18:86) : What is setting place of sun?
-
What is setting place of sun? It is mentioned in quran in surah 18 verse 86? Is it a specific geographical location?
"Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness." -
Salam!
I think that is a place in western most part of Africa. The eastern part of Africa has been called ans is still called 'The Horn of Africa'. I am looking for the other horn. Maybe Atlantis!

He had embarked upon a mission and there was a cause as reflected by particle "Fa". Destination was predetermined. It was from start location towards East- the side of Sunset. The site he wanted to visit is indicated Mud Spring. What he was observing at that location somewhat like this

So, the form "maf3al" is known as a "noun of time and place" (T&P), indicating when and/or where the verb occurs.
Example
dakhala = he entered
madkhal = the time and/or place of enteringThe noun of time and place can either be of the patterns "maf3al" or "maf3il" depending of the middle vowel of the present tense verb. If the middle vowel is a kasra, the noun of T&P is "maf3il". If the middle vowel is fatha or dhamma, the noun of T&P is "maf3al"
Example
yajlis = he sits ; therefore, the noun of T&P is "majlis"
yadkhul = he enters ; therefore, the noun of T&P is "madkhal"
yashrab = he drinks ; therefore, the noun of T&P is "mashrab"There are 12 exceptions to the rules stated above, listed by grammarians, e.g. in 'A Grammar of the Arabic Language' by W. Wright, and they are
(the specific word forms in red do not appear in Quran to my knowledge)- majzir = the T/P of slaughtering
- masjid = the T/P of prostration
- masqi6 = the T/P of falling
- maskin = the T/P of habitation
- mashriq = the T/P of the sun rise
- ma6li3 (ع = the T/P of ascent
- maghrib = the T/P of the sun set
- mafriq = the T/P of division
- marfiq = the T/P of resting one's self
- manbit = the T/P of a plant's growth
- mankhir = the T/P of the breath passing through the nose (commonly, the nostrils)
- mansik = the T/P of sacrifice
All the above 12 take a dhamma on the present tense verb, but, in violation of the rules, they take a kasra for the noun of T&P instead of a fatha.
However, the regular forms are also said to occur, that is, majzar, masjad, masqa6, maskan, etc.
Also note it says "he found" i.e. his own perception

Wakas is right for the definition (Number 7).
But if you try to find a "specific geographical location" you are off-topic in regards of the subject of this surah.
PeaceSuch loud judgments??

Perhaps but realistic. Only pure speculation. it is my point of view and we forget lessons from this surah and this ayat.
It seems you are not interested in understanding the specific words of the Book, but wish to speculate something beyond the actual words. http//haqeeqat.pk/roots/Tabweeb/0000.%20Haroof%20particles/17.%20Inda-location%20adverb/5.gif It is an adverb of location. And Maghrib is a directional relation.

" It is an adverb of location. And Maghrib is a directional relation." => Yes i never say the opposite.
Good luck in the non-speculative researching of a "specific geographical location".

Some researchers have the opinion that the route mentioned of Zulqarnain, is the one of the silk road networks which was an established route mainly in China, connecting Asia to middle east and Europe in medieval times. Later we see mention of a wall in this story. A great wall, which was built to stop invaders from attacking communities, is also associated with China. So, the setting of this story of Zulqarnain is most probably in the Asian region of China/Mongolia/Korea. There is a muddy stream mentioned in the Ayas as well. The muddy stream should be a river carrying lot of silt so that it appears muddy. In China there exists a river which carries so much silt with it that the people call it ?the Yellow river?. This river is also known with the name of ?muddy flow? by local folks. Also, Zalqarnain?s next leg of journey is said to be culminating in a place where there was no covering from Sun. This setting sounds like a desert where there is no shelter from the sun. The likely place is some where in Gobi Desert near China/Mongolia border. The below link gives indication of the likely geographical locations related to this storyhttps//topicsfromquran.com/2018/09/22/zal-qarnain-dual-qarnain/

China wall is not of iron and copper.

China wall is not of iron and copper.
Right, brother.
The whole present wall of China, would not be the one built in Zulqarnain's era. May be a small part of it was initiated by Zalqarnain, which may be later built upon and extended by subsequent nations. The original part of the wall may have iron reinforcement inside present day bricks and stones.
Allah knows best.
