Allah = Akbar?
-
Salam Born again,
Allahu Akbar is a sentence that sounds like this
GOD is bigger with the understanding that HE is bigger than anything that happens or anyone that is mentioned. It is a reminder that whatever big thing happens, then GOD is always Bigger.
Salam
Hussein

Thank you for your explanation, hlatif.

Salaamun alaikum,
My understanding is that Allah never uses the word Akbar as His name in Al-Quran (the phrase Allahu Akbar is nowhere in Al-Quran). Then why should we call Allah Akbar??? The closest name Allah uses for himself in al-Quran is Al-Kabeer so we should call Allahu Al-Kabeer and not Allahu Akbar.
God is incomparably Great as Al-Kabeer means. He is not greater which implies other gods (that He is greater than other god/gods). Any comments?

Khi- Coz GOD says in the Quran
And proclaim "Praise be to GOD, who has never begotten a son, nor does He have a partner in His kingship, nor does He need any ally out of weakness," and magnify Him constantly(KABIRHU TAKBEERA).
The Takbeer in Arabic is 'Allahu Akbar'. Thts how GOD is MAGNIFIED.God is incomparably Great as Al-Kabeer means. He is not greater which implies other gods (that He is greater than other god/gods). Any comments?
Khi- 'Kabeer' in Arabic is the base form of the adjective. 'Akbar' is greater than 'kabeer'. In Arabic we have no sepaarte word 4 the comparative n superlative terms. If the noun is terminated by the comparative/superlative form without the conjunction 'min(from/than)' it means it is used as the superlative e.g. 'Al Quran AHSANUL Hadith' means 'The Quran is the BEST hadith' NOT 'the Quran is the better hadith'. Also the two words 'kabeer' n 'akbar r compared in the Quran in the following verse
They ask you about the Sacred Months and fighting therein say, "Fighting therein is a GREAT sin(kabeer). However, repelling from the path of GOD and disbelieving in Him and in the sanctity of the Sacred Masjid, and evicting its people, are GREATER sins(AKBAR) in the sight of GOD. Oppression is worse than murder." They will always fight you to revert you from your religion, if they can. Those among you who revert from their religion, and die as disbelievers, have nullified their works in this life and the Hereafter. These are the dwellers of Hell, wherein they abide forever. Thus the value of 'akbar' is more tzhan tht of 'kabeer'. 4 more details on this issue plz see

Salaamun alaikum idmkhizer,
Sins can be compared to each other so the words great or greater can be used for them. Allah is INCOMPARABLY Great. No need to use the word "greater" for Him as Allah cannot be compared to anything or anyone. You still have not shown me anywhere in Al-Quran where Allah has used the word akbar for himself as in Allahu akbar. I had already read the article on submission.org. They havent given a single example of Allahu akbar from Al-Quran either.
Constant magnification for Allah can be done by using any of His other glorious names from Al-Quran including the name Al-Kabeer.
Happy hunting !!

Khi- Salam. U didnt get it did u? 'Kabeer' is the base form of the adjective while Akbar is comparative/superlative which is higher so we wld use the higher degree term 4 GOD thus magnifying Him as is mentioned in the Quran 'kabirhu takbeera'. The takbeer in Arabic is 'Allahu Akbar'. It's just like GOD says in the Quran tht those who believe(aamanoo billahi wa wl malikatihi wal kutubihi wa rusulihi) in GOD His Angels His Books n His Messengers. Now we can use the word 'Ammantu billahi wal malaaikatihi...' 2 indicate tht I BELIEVE in so n so. This is only a matter of wording in the Arabic language. Nothing wrong with tht. So even if the phrase 'Allahu Akbar' is not found in the Quran tht doesnt mean tht we cannot use it. If i call GOD as 'Super Intelligent Source/Designer' in English 2 praise Him tht wldnt be wrong either just coz it aint in Quran. GOD's attributes r not restricted 2 the Quran only. GOD Bless!

Salaamun alaikum idmkhizer,
U didnt get it did u?
Same applies to you brother !
Let me give an example. Let me start calling you Saleem from now on. Will you like it? You will not. Because only you know what your name is and only you can authorize a name change or for people to call you by another name. Same for Allah. Simple. Only Allah can tell us what His names are, how He wants us to address Him, and what His attributes are. And where do we find that? Only in Allah's Word. Al-Kabeer and Akbar are not same, big difference. One means Great, other means greater. Allah is incomparable. Why do you insist on comparing Allah to something else?? You are implying there are other gods and goddesses besides Allah and Allah is greater than them.
You can use the superlative word greater for 2 things that are similar but you cannot use it for completely different things. You cannot say that an apple is greater than the color blue. You can say the number ten is greater than the number five.
GOD's attributes r not restricted 2 the Quran only
Says who? You? Give me evidence for the above from Al-Quran please.
Peace brother saleem, oops idmkhizer, but then what you can do to Allah I can do to you !!

peace Br. tanveer, all,
Nice points.
I was wondering, where is the interpretation ar-Rahim = Most Merciful taken from? Why is the "most" there? Do you or anyone know? I cant recall it being discussed before.
I ask because aspects of it resemble the Akbar & Kabeer debate for me.Wakas

Khi- The superlative of 'great' wld be 'greatest' n i told u in Arabic if the comparative is not compared 2 something with the conjunction 'min' it automatically becomes the superlative thus Allahu Akbar means 'GOD is GeratEST' NOT 'GOD is Greater'. Get it now?
Says who? You? Give me evidence for the above from Al-Quran please.
Khi- To GOD belongs the most beautiful names; call upon Him therewith, and disregard those who distort His names. They will be requited for their sins.
Nowehere do we find in the Quran tht It contains all the attributes of GOD. Infact it says
Say, "If the ocean were ink for the words of my Lord, the ocean would run out, before the words of my Lord run out, even if we double the INK supply."
If all the trees on earth were made into pens, and the ocean supplied the ink, augmented by seven more oceans, the words of GOD would not run out. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise.

Khi- Salam. When attributes r referring 2 GOD in Arabic they automatically take on supreme form in meaning. This is one of the reasons tht when the word 'ISM' which aint an attribute is counted it doesnt matter whether it be referring 2 GOD's Name or not since the meaning is same but in case of attrbutes this cnts. GOD Bless!

Salaam idmkhizar,
Allahu Akbar means 'GOD is GeratEST' NOT 'GOD is Greater'. Get it now?
Greatest has the same implication, you are comparing Allah to something else. You just dont get it, I guess !
Nowehere do we find in the Quran tht It contains all the attributes of GOD.
So that means you just start guessing what other attributes He has?? Conjecture has led to our downfall in the present times. You cannot call Allah by a name that He has not authorized for Himself. If you want to call Him by a name please produce the Word of Allah that authorizes it. Please refrain from conjecture
278 And amongst them are Gentiles who do not know the Scripture except by hearsay, and they only conjecture.
6118 And if you obey the majority of those on Earth they will lead you away from God's path; that is because they follow conjecture, and that is because they only guess.
6150 Say "Do you have any knowledge to bring out to us? You only follow conjecture, you only guess."
1037 Most of them only follow conjecture. While conjecture does not avail against the truth in anything. God is aware of what they do.
5329 While they had no knowledge about this; they only followed conjecture. And conjecture is no substitute for the truth. So disregard he who turns away from Our reminder, and only desires this worldly life.By calling Allah someone by the name of akbar you are following conjecture and your personal desires. Be very careful, Allah has warned us not to call Him by names He has not authorized
5320 Have you considered Allaat and Al-`Uzzah?
5321 And Manaat, the third one?
5322 Do you have the males, while He has the females?
5323 What a strange distribution!
5324 These are but names that you made up, you and your forefathers. God never authorized such. They only follow conjecture, and personal desire, while the guidance has come to them from their Lord.771 He said "An affliction and wrath shall befall you from your Lord. Do you argue with me over names which you and your fathers have created with no authority being sent down by God? Wait then, and I will wait with you."
1241 "What you serve besides Him are nothing but names which you have created you and your fathers, God did not send down any authority for such. The judgment is for none but God.
You still have not given me any proof from Al-Quran that Allah's ATTRIBUTES are not restricted to His Words only. Do you know better than Allah about His attributes ?. The above ayat are talking about WORDS of Lord being so many that nothing can encompass it. Doesn't say that Allah's attributes are not restricted to Allah's Words only. Even though His Words are so numerous does not mean we start guessing what His attributes are or call Him by a name that He has not authorized, brother saleem, oops, I mean idmkhizer. You still have to produce His Words describing His attributes because only He knows His attributes, not you or me. Please refrain from guesswork or distortion.
To GOD belongs the most beautiful names; call upon Him therewith, and disregard those who distort His names. They will be requited for their sins.
There is no proof in the above ayat that Allah's names are not restricted to His Words only. Infact the above verse seems to describe people like you who distort His names. Akbar is clearly a distortion of Al-Kabeer. Thank you for bringing that ayat to my attention. From now on I am going to disregard you as per Allah's command.

Peace all
The most BEAUTIFUL NAMES belong to Allah SO CALL ON HIM BY "THEM"; but LEAVE THOSE who APOSTATISE in His NAMES for what they do they will soon be requited. 7180
No Muslim has yet understood this verse.
Don't get PANICKED Have a look on the following three verses and ponder.
Allah! There is no god but He! To Him BELONG the Most "BEAUTIFUL NAMES". 208
He is Allah the Creator the Evolver the Bestower of Forms (or colors). To Him belong the Most "BEAUTIFUL NAMES" Whatever is in the heavens and on earth doth declare His Praises and Glory and He is the exalted in Might the Wise. 5924
Say "Call upon "ALLAH" or call upon "RAHMAN" by whatever name ye call upon Him (it is well) for to Him belong the Most BEAUTIFUL NAMES. Neither speak thy Prayer aloud nor speak it in a low tone but seek a middle course between." 17110
To Allah BELONG all the BEAUTIFUL NAMES and call Him by "ANY SUCH NAME"
The example of one BEAUTIFUL NAMES is "RAHMAN"
Now Allah says in verse 7180 that call on HIM by THEM.
How would we know which are the BEAUTIFUL NAMES of Allah unless HE has revealed THOSE in the Quran
Prophet FOLLOWED the Quran; therefore he called Allah by HIS NAME and HIS ATTRIBUTES, which are mentioned in the Quran and not his own.
The word 'THEM" indicates that Allah has revealed HIS BEAUTIFUL NAMES in the Quran and commands us to call BY THEM only.
It is no secret that Allah has 99 BEAUTIFUL NAMES and is revealed in His Quran and we are supposed to call on HIM by any of "THEM" "only"
The "THEM" does not include " AKBAR" but "AL - KABIR"
(It will be said) "This is because, when Allah Alone was invoked (in worship, etc.) you disbelieved, but when partners were joined to Him, you believed! So the judgement is only with Allah, the Most High, the (AL- KABIR) Most Great!" 4012
He knoweth the Unseen and that which is open He is (AL- KABIR) the Great the Most High 139.
That is because Allah He is the Reality and those besides Him whom they invoke they are but vain Falsehood verily Allah is He Most High (AL- KABIR) Most Great. 2262
That is because Allah is the (only) Reality and because whatever else they invoke besides Him is Falsehood; and because Allah He is the Most High (AL- KABIR) Most Great. 3130
"No intercession can avail in His Presence except for those for whom He has granted permission. So far (is this the case) that when terror is removed from their hearts (at the Day of Judgement then) will they say
What is it that your Lord commanded?' They will sayThat which is true and just; and He is the Most High (AL- KABIR) Most Great.' " 3423HE is AL KABIR and not AKBAR
There is a great difference between GREATEST and THE GREAT.
The One Who is ALONE. THE One Who has no ALIKE; The One Who has no SECOND to Him, The One Who has no PARALLEL to Him, cannot be AKBAR but only AL - KABIR.
It is a FABRICATION by the MUSLIMS and a hundredth name and not authorised by Allah.
WA- DHARO 'ALLADHENA YULH.IDON FE ASMAA' -HI 7180
And leave those who apostatises (disbelieves) in His Names.
Those who disbelieve in AL KABIR (Quranic Name) and calls Him ALLAH U AKBAR (Unquranic Name) should be left alone. They will be requited for what they used to do.
Thanks
