"Halal" meat
-
I have to admit food is one of my weaknesses. I used to eat at all kinds of restaurants, until I reread the verse
53 Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols.
I realized, how am I to know whether this animal I'm eating is permissable for me? i.e., even if I say Bismillah before I eat it, how would I know if this animal was not beaten to or prior death, dead before they slaughtered it, etc. etc? I doubt saying Bismillah over something that might have been possibly beaten to death (for example) would make that thing permissable to eat. It would be like saying Bismillah over pork and deciding its fine to eat, which is not. I mean, I do not really care about the "islamic" way of slaughtering the animal; just that it doesn't fit in the categories of the verse above. I really have no way of knowing, unless I go to the slaughterhouse and watch what they do to the animal before they slaughter it, which is impossible. If its doubtful, does that mean we should abstain from eating it?
I've been eating only 'halal' now because of this doubt, but I am sometimes tempted to stop by my favorite thai and italian restaurant ? just wanted to know others thoughts on this

Peace,
....my favorite thai and italian restaurant ? just wanted to know others thoughts on this
Love Thai, Chinese, Filippino and Pakistani/Indian spicy cuisines. Thai duck soup is tasty. Also Japanese Sushi. Hey, I'm all for it when it comes to delicious foods.
By the way, "halal meat" is a joke and a political/selfish government.

Peace Khadija, btw in what part of the world are you?
Reviewing the verse, it is clear that we are forbidden to eat animals that are
- Strangled
- Dead through beating
- Dead through falling from a height
- Gored
- Devoured by wild beasts.
I assume methods 3, 4, and 5 are not used in commercial slaughtering of animals. (I mean, who runs a slaughterhouse that pushes cattle off a cliff? ? )
The common practice in Muslim countries is the so-called halal slaughtering, which is slitting the throat and letting the blood flow out. This is safe.
In western countries I think they electrocute cattle, sheep and goats. Insofar as death by electrocution is not considered as any of those five forbidden techniques above, then I believe it's still halal. Anyway, it is quite hard to slaughter livestock by strangling or beating though.
Chickens are usually slaughtered either by slitting the throat (at least that's what I've been told by a chicken farmer) or gassing. So it's safe too. It is easy to strangle or beat a chicken to death, but I don't know if any chicken slaughterhouse preferred these two methods over the cleaner ones mentioned earlier.
So I guess as long as it's not carrion, pork, or blood, it's halal. Just offering my thought, sis Khadija. I hope this is useful.

How is this different from eating regular meat? The same problem exists (i.e., not knowing first hand the method of the animal's death).
I really have no way of knowing, unless I go to the slaughterhouse and watch what they do to the animal before they slaughter it, which is impossible. -
Salaams All,
The Chinese strangle the ducks. You can see them hanging at any Chinese restaurant window
Probably. But I've also seen some hanging ducks with their throats slit.
Moral of the story Check the hanging ducks before you eat. But Chinese restaurants are notorious for mixing pork with everything though.
-
peace All,
But Chinese restaurants are notorious for mixing pork with everything though.
Yeh, whats up with that! I found out only after tasting such a dish, even though I asked beforehand if it contained pork.. to which, the waiter said "no".
In any case, traditional Muslims are often confused about the halal meat issue. If you see those Q&A shows, it often comes up and the conclusion is often unclear.

Andya Primanda - I live in the united states. I remember watching this PETA video once of how chickens were slaughtered (they were thrown against walls, their beaks were ripped off, dipped them in boiling water, etc) for some fast food restaurants, and since then started feeling doubt.. i didn't want to rule out the possibility that this kind of slaughter would be provided for any other restaurants

Peace all,
I guess it's that time again for the meatrix. )
after watching the video, you can learn about local farmers and markets that sell meat that is free from antibiotics and hormones, free-range and pasture-raised, and 100% vegetarian fed (no chance for mad-cow with vegetarian feed).
This is for the U.S. and Canada only. Just enter your postal or zip code.
http//www.eatwellguide.org/
The phone numbers, addresses, and websites of your local farmers and markets are availabe through that website. You can contact your local farmer and ask how they slaughter their animals, or even go down to the farm and check it out for yourself.
For me, there are local farms within 15 km of where I live.

He has forbidden you only
1 Al-Maytatah (meat of a dead animal),
2 blood,
3 the flesh of swine, and
4 any animal which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than All?h.
But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, All?h is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (16112-116)6138-140
- And they said ?These are livestock and crops that are restricted, and none shall eat from them except as we please,? by their claims; and livestock whose backs are forbidden, and livestock over which they do not mention God?s name as invention against Him. He will recompense them for what they invented.
- And they said ?What is in the bellies of these livestock is purely for our males and forbidden for our wives, and if comes out dead, then they will be partners in it.? God will recompense them for what they describe. He is Wise, Knowledgeable.
- Losers are those who have killed their unborn children foolishly, without knowledge, and they forbade what God had granted them by lying about God. They have strayed and they were not guided.
And they say such cattle and crops are forbidden. No one is to eat of them save whom we will in their make believe cattle whose backs are forbidden, cattle over which they mention not the name of Allah. (All this is) a lie against him. He will repay them for that which they invent.
And they say That which is in the bellies of such cattle is reserved for our males and is forbidden to our wives but if it be born dead then the may be partakers thereof he will reward them for their attribution (Ordinances unto him). Lo, he is wise, aware.
They are losers who besottedly have slain their children without knowledge, and have forbidden that which Allah bestowed upon them, inventing a lie against Allah. They indeed have gone astray and are not guided.
2
And according to their pretending, they say that such and such cattle and crops are forbidden, and none should eat of them except those whom we allow. And (they say) there are cattle forbidden to be used for burden or any other work, and cattle on which (at slaughtering) the Name of All?h is not pronounced; lying against Him (All?h). He will recompense them for what they used to fabricate. And they say "What is in the bellies of such and such cattle (milk or fetus) is for our males alone, and forbidden to our females (girls and women), but if it is born dead, then all have shares therein." He will punish them for their attribution (of such false orders to All?h). Verily, He is All Wise, All-Knower.
Indeed lost are they who have killed their children, from folly, without knowledge, and have forbidden that which All?h has provided for them, inventing a lie against All?h. They have indeed gone astray and were not guided.

After listening to all I just need to ask a question wether CHICKEN is HALAAL?
Can any one get me a single verse from AlQuraan mentioning that Chicken or Birds are Halaal?
May Allah guide us all towards the right path.

If god tells you not to eat specific things, you can eat the rest.
The first criterion
He has forbidden you only
1 Al-Maytatah (meat of a dead animal),
2 blood,
3 the flesh of swine, and
4 any animal which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than All?h.
But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, All?h is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (16112-116)After we meet the above criterion we don?t need to worry about anything else. If we do we are innovating.

I agree with the verses you have quoted above. But "If we do we are innovating" part I don't agree with.
There are something more we have to understand brother.
What do you think about ".... UHILLAT lakum Baheematul-An'aami....." 51
What is the meaning of mentioning here Uhillat lakum. If forbidden things are mentioned? And also "Alyawma UHILLA lakumut-tayyibaatu....." 55
Remember! Lakum means "for you" is mentioned in both the verses.
And also what means "wa laa ta' kuloo mimma lam yuzkarismu-Allahi 'alaihi wa innaho lafisq........." 6121
Please read it from 6118 - 6121
And what about 16116?
"wa laa taqooloo lima tasifu alsinatukumul-kaziba HAADZAA HALAALUN-WA HAADZAA HARAAMUN-litaftaroo 'al-Allahil-kadziba....." 16116So that means there is no innovation brother and if you would like to see in more detail... please see the following verses about what is lawful or preferred for you....
3635 - fruits
2319 - fruits3227 - field
1024 - field1614 - sea food
3512 - sea food165 - cattles
2321 - cattles
4079 - cattlesJust to quote the few... Allah has clearly mentioned about every thing that is made lawful and unlawful for us as well as mentioned about preferred foods and non-preferrable foods for us.
But, I don't find chicken or birds.
If anyone knows any verse about it, please do share with us.
May Allah guide us all towards the truth.

Peace,
I had an interesting idea about this. A lot of people talk about halal and haram meat, the traditionalists make it compulsory to use certain methods of killing or ending an animals life, and also make sure certain things are uttered in Arabic. I personally think this is exactly what teh Quran prohibits, they try to satisfy their Gods (Hadithists) by making these additional requirements necessary whereas the Quran does not mentions specific methods, but gives us boundaries.
Food is very important and arguably the traditionalists food could be considerd haram as they are dedicated to other than God. But I don't take it TOO SERIOUSLY as there is nto much we can do and God tells us that we shouldn't worry too much and also that we are not responsible for what is eaten in the houses of family, relatives and friends.
Peace- just my own thoughts. Feel free to criticise.

Thank you for your reply brother. Respect. First allow me to open out that I am not conversant in arabic. I am Sri Lankan and from a Sunni family where all we learn was to read the Quran in Arabic.
But I have studied all the Quran translations I can get hold of. Please allow me to print here some findings. THis is from the free minds QT. And please correct me.
So that means there is no innovation brother and if you would like to see in more detail... please see the following verses about what is lawful or preferred for you....
The Quran teaches that God is extremely displeased with those who prohibit anything that was not specifically prohibited in the Quran.
Surah 16
112. And God cites the example of a town which was peaceful and content, its provisions were coming to it bountifully from all places, but then it rebelled against God?s blessings and God made it taste hunger and fear for what they used to do.
113. And a messenger came to them from themselves, but they denied him, so the punishment took them while they were wicked.
114. So eat from what God has provided for you, that which is good and lawful, and thank the blessings of God, if it is indeed He whom you serve.
115. He only made forbidden for you what is already dead, and blood, and the meat of pig, and what was sacrificed to any other than God. But whoever is forced to, without disobedience or transgression, then God is Forgiving, Merciful.
116. And do not say regarding what your tongues describe with lies ?This is lawful and that is forbidden;? that you seek to invent lies about God. Those who invent lies about God will not succeed. Also read 6142-152
The Quran clearly and very specifically prohibits four meats (2173, 53, 6142-145, and 16112)
Say, "I do not find in what was revealed to me anything prohibited for any eater unless it is (1) carrion, (2) running blood, (3) the meat of pigs, for it is unclean, and (4) meat blasphemously dedicated to other than God." If one is forced to eat these without being malicious or deliberate, then your Lord is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
Check the definition of innovation at this link.
http//thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=innovationaddition, alteration, contraption, cutting edge, departure, deviation, in thing, introduction, last word, latest thing, latest wrinkle, leading edge, modernism, modernization, modification, mutation, new wrinkle, newfangled idea, newness, notion, novelty, permutation, shift, variation, vicissitude, what's happening, wrinkle
What I mean here is God has given us rulings against a certain thing. The quran is the only communication that we can trust to take a ruling associated with religion as It is the only book god promises integrity and Submission is the only religion. We just dont have what it takes to add anything to that law. Be it food or anything else. It is like rediculing god. I hope you see my point. This is the reason I freed my self form traditional hadithism.
- He has only forbidden for you what is already dead, and the blood, and the meat of pig, and what was dedicated to other than God. Whoever finds himself forced out of need and without disobedience or animosity, then there is no sin upon him. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
53 Forbidden to you is that which is already dead, and the blood, and the meat of pig, and what was sacrificed to other than God, and that which has been strangled, and that which has been beaten to death, and that which has fallen from a height, and that which has been gored, and that which the wild animals have eaten from except what you managed to rescue, and what has been slaughtered on alters, and what you divide by the arrows of chance. This is all vile. Today the rejecters have given up from your system, so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your system for you, and completed My blessings upon you, and I have accepted surrender as the system for you. So, whoever is forced by severe hunger and not seeking sin, then God is Forgiving, Merciful.
THis clearly shows an invention.
6138-140- And they said ?These are livestock and crops that are restricted, and none shall eat from them except as we please,? by their claims; and livestock whose backs are forbidden, and livestock over which they do not mention God?s name as invention against Him.
Peace brother

Peace Shohorab,
I don't know if you sent the reply to me or not, but I agree that teh Quran prohibits the meats outlined in the verses regarding this topic. I was just shedding light on the fact taht a lot of muslims make some laws and methods based on hadith and therefore they could be dedicating their food to false gods.
