what is Nafs

when we sleep Allah takes the nafs and when we wake up the nafs return.
i have been wondering what happens. Like when we wakeup we dont have sense of time. but then what is a dream state, is it our nafs in other dimensions ?

My understanding of the "Nafs" is that it is the SPIRIT.
It is the ENERGY/MATTER that is the substance of the entire universe.
The Physical world including our bodies are the lowest, densest part of SPIRIT.
There are two aspects of BEING, they are
- Consciousness (which wills)
and
- Energy/Matter
Consciousness is who we are and willing is what we do, but THAT which CARRIES OUT what is willed by consciousness is the SPIRIT(energy/matter).
It is the "soil" of the magical garden that, if properly maintained, becomes the "paradise".
If we look at the verses regarding NAFS, we can see that it is something that WE are in charge of,not something we are to identify with as our SELF. The Mind as wellas the thoughts and emotions are part of the spirit. The consciousness WHO WE ARE, witnesses al of these objects and WILLS what to do with them
(917-10) And/by a spirit and who straightened it, So He transmitted (to) it its corruption, and its awareness, Who purified it had succeeded/won, And who corrupted it had failed/despaired.
I am still putting my thought together regarding dreams, so I cannot add to that aspect just yet.

SPIRIT = ability in other words ?
when v sleep the spirit is gone, we are out of the physical body but in different state known as sleep, maybe! ?

we will sleep till the judgement day after death. if thts how it is then the NAFS is always alive, i.e. the power (not physical), the will, our ability to feel not body feel.
we dream when v sleep, the nafs not inthe body but we do feel everything like real. the state/dimension is different. could it be after death we experience a quite sleep or filled with bad dreams or good dreams ?
