Quranic view of the creation process : Earth/Land and Mountains
-
Peace,
In the Quranic view of the creative process, the "earth", ard, and the "mountains", jibâl, are two distinct elements that will be assembled by the Creator God. The third element is the "sky", al-samâ', presented in the singular form in the oldest Quranic passages.
1/ The earth
The earth is represented as a flat surface, stretched out like a woven cloth that would be completely unrolled and laid flat.
Words like mahd, mihâd, firâsh, bisât, which designate the earth spread by the Creator like a mat or a carpet, are characteristic in this respect.
Thus, the root MHD gives the idea of "laying flat" or "leveling" to make a journey or an undertaking easy."Have we not made the earth an unrolled carpet , alam najʿali l-arḍa mihāda ?"
We also find the verb mahda, to lengthen by pulling (a mat) to make it flat in ; ; . With the verb dahâ (DHW root with the pharyngeal h), again we have the sense of spreading over a large area or scattering pebbles over a wide space to prevent them from obstructing . The verb tahâ (THY root with the emphatic t), present in , has a similar meaning. For the root BST with the sense of "to widen", we have bisât, the "carpet" in . On the other hand, in the more recent occurrences, presumably from Mecca or Medina, the image of "stability" prevails, with the derivatives of the root QRR (4064; 2761 with quarâr, the "stable place" and 236 with mustaqarr, passive participle, "that which is stabilized".
Thus, the earth's surface, which must remain flat, is seen as also needing to be anchored. Without it, it would be subject to uncontrolled movements. The verb tamîdu al-ard, "to sway like a branch shaken by the wind", is said of the earth (e.g. 3110 and 2131). The MYD root gives the meaning of "to move in all directions", taharraka, and also "to lean" and "not to remain upright", mâla.
The image of the swaying of the earth reflects the risk of perpetual movement that would prevent all human activity (especially that of the nomad). The men of Arabia knew, having experienced it, what a moving earth is. It is to avoid this inconvenience that the Creation will give the mountains an essential function of stabilization.2/ The mountains
In the Quran, we discover that they play the role of stakes driven into the ground just like those that hold the Bedouin tent.
Indeed, in one of the passages of the Qur'an relating to mountains, they are identified by an unequivocal term that explicitly refers to the awtâd, the "tent pegs" that will stabilize the earth."Have we not made the earth an unrolled carpet , alam najʿali l-arḍa mihāda ?"
"And the Mountains as pegs , wal-jibāla awtāda ?"According to the Quranic vision, which probably reflects a representation already present in the collective imagination, it is to prevent the earth from flying away or rather from swaying, making human activities impossible.
"We have placed , dja'alnâ, in the earth well anchored, rawâsî, to prevent it from swaying, 'an tamîda, under their feet
and We have made passages, dja'alnâ, wide enough, fidjâdj , which will be safe routes , subul. Perhaps they will be well guided , laʿallahum yahtadūn.
"Thus, it is important to note that in the process of creation, next to the earth and the sky, the mountains appear as an element superimposed on the Creation. It would be a mistake to see the mountains in the Qur'an as a representation of an elevation of the earth, as we might spontaneously imagine today.
Among the passages concerned with the term al-rawâsî, "those which are anchored", we notice that, in several of them, the rawâsî are "thrown", ilqa', by the divine creator on the flat and mobile surface of the earth (this is the case in 507; 3110; 1615 and 1519). In the other more neutrally worded passages, they are simply "placed" (verb dja'ala), obviously in an appropriate manner. Finally, the mountains have a special status in a way, playing a role as an aid to Creation. It should be noted that the verb Khalaqa, "to shape", "to conform", which applies to the creation of Man, is not used in relation to them, as if they were armed and as such in themselves as a necessary reinforcement in the creative process, in the manner of tent pegs, awtâd.

Peace Jkhan,
Peace brother Iyyaka...
I hope you have more to say on this topic.. What are you trying to say by this topic anyway? No i expose ONLY what the QURAN tells us about the relationship between the earth and the mountains.
My speech is clear.
I have given enough elements to meditate on (then you have to look for yourself the verses quoted but not detailed in my intervention)
To summarize, and if we were to retain only one thing it is that, according to the Quran, the mountains are not part of the earth or do not come from it.
And like any element of the creation, in the Quran, they have first of all a UTILITY for the Men and their survival. This is in partial opposition with this remark (2 minutes and 5 seconds of the video below - that fascinates so many modern "Muslims"
"The Quranic descriptions are PERFECT agreement with modern geological data"- the phenomenon of plate tectonics or "folding" is not in the Quran
- The mountains in the Quran are not the result of this collision of the continental plates.

Keep researching.. God will at one point you will grasp the creations of God and what they are... Until then good luck.. God bless you..I did a study and i quoted you clear excerpts from the Qur'an on the subject of the relationship between the earth and the mountains. And you say "Keep researching"... for what ? to come to other conclusions than what the Qur'an says or to conclude of what you think is true?

Peace Jkhan,
I did a study and i quoted you clear excerpts from the Qur'an on the subject of the relationship between the earth and the mountains. And you say "Keep researching"... for what ? to come to other conclusions than what the Qur'an says or to conclude of what you think is true?Well.. Calm down.. Too much dispute.. Then Satan's job will be easy..
Red... If that is what I want from God... Then I deny God manifestly.. Coz if I expect anything other than QURAN then my destiny is needles to express.. Ensure that you also not seek anything other than what Quran says..
Brown.... Since Quran is true that is true.. What I think or you think or anyone else think won't make any change in what is already written in Quran ... Quran is true and find a way to get guidance from it.. Guidance cannot be of wrong option... There is no guidance with misguidance blended .. So choose wisely what is right within Quran... Debate until you get convinced... For example.. I call earth is stationary.. It is not my belief but those who are against stationary are relatively failing to respond meaningfully to my challenging questions... So my research works well coz my concerns are not answered rationally with truth.. But keep mocking..
Keep researching.. Allah's book is miraculous.. Don't confine yourself as if you are done with it..
Thank you.. God bless you.. Seek the guidance with patience.. -

But you are dancing around the subject of this post.
If you don't want to meditate on my study with Quranic proofs, no problem bro (don't do any interventions and it's over)
Never mind, thanks and God bless you too. -
Earth creation is mostly based on unproven theories. However, just recently this is what we got
Study reveals a “boring” era when Earth was flat, with no mountains
Scientists discovered that Earth was likely quite flat during it’s so-called middle ages. Not flat as in conspiracies that don’t believe our planet is round, but lacking in mountains. It was also a period of little growth of life. In fact, this stretch of time from 1.8 billion to 0.8 billion years ago is also known as the “Boring Billion” and referred to as “the dullest period in Earth’s history.”
Nothing dull about what the researchers found, however, by studying the chemical element europium, embedded in zircon crystals. Their analysis revealed that during the Boring Billion, the absence of tectonic activity that’s crucial to mountain creation also slowed the nutrient cycling vital for the evolution of life.
The research involved studying zircon crystals from around the globe, carried out by teams from Peking University, the University of Toronto, Rutgers University, and the University of Science and Technology of China. They based their work on previous findings that showed a connection between the amount of europium located inside a zircon crystal and the thickness of the Earth’s crust when the crystal was formed. A larger amount of the europium meant more pressure pushing down on it from above. This indicated that the crust was thicker.
The scientists, led by Ming Tang from Peking University, found that during the so-called middle or “Boring” period, Earth’s crust was thinner than it is now. There were no mountains and the surface was all oceans and flat land masses. This indicated to the researchers that tectonic activity likely stopped or at least slowed majorly for about 1 billion years. Tectonic activity is known to push mountains up, leading also to erosion that enriches oceanic environments and fosters evolving life. If such a cycle was disrupted, evolution would have slowed to a crawl. This is what previous studies have suggested for that time period.https//bigthink.com/hard-science/study-earth-flat-no-mountains/

Thank you for sharing this research.
But from a Quranic perspective (the subject of this topic) the mountains are SEPARATED pieces from the earth (another entity autonomous from the earth).
So two differents subjects (modern science and Quranic perspective). -

Mountains take on very different forms depending on the processes leading to their orogeny from continental margin escarpments and rifts in the extensive domain, to collision and folding chains, via subduction phases creating explosive volcanoes in island arcs or along cordilleras, not forgetting effusive hot spot volcanism and intrusions uncovered by erosion.
=> Modern science demonstrates that mountains are linked to the earth/land (they are part of it).
=> For the Qur'an the view is not the same they (mountains) are brought in as elements planted in the earth/land. -

Mountains do mimick plants.Neither of them can stay without roots. Mountains must push themselves downward to the mantle as a way to manage their weight and height. Iceberg behaves the same way. Some mountains are apparently still under the earth surface. That said, I think your last line is quite intriguing and should be scientifically researched. At the end of the day, many natural things we take for granted indeed came from space.

Peace reel,
I just expose what the Quran inform us about his vision of the Creation (trying to be neutral).
Modern science already DEMONSTRATE how the moutains are born (part of the earth, not separated with it).
On this aspect, the vision of the Quran is different. But as a believer I don't mind that WHEN the Qur'anic word is placed in its original environment (avoiding anachronism).NB
- Mazhar has understood the creation of the mountains from a Qur'anic perspective (point 1 - http//haqeeqat.pk/Mountains.htm) " firmly grounded anchors were not created in the universe but were inserted in the Earth which means it were the materials "imported" into the Earth. They were inserted and placed in such manner that they are over her surface and firmly grounded downwards within the Earth."
BUT unfortunately, on point 2 (quoting verse ), he is mistaken because the discourse analysis of the context is eschatological (cf. verses 2787-90).
