If you also still believe in ritual salat...
-
Peace sister,
The last thing you should worry about is what they think. At the very least, if it will make them think that will be a good outcome. If you are not under physical threat, I think you should overcome your inhibitions and pray. You never know, it can even spark their curiosity.
But our goal should be to only please God, not people, nor to fear people. I realize this is easier said than done. But just make the resolve and do not miss any prayer. See those people as just a test for you, and try to overcome this test.
Peace.
Peace
I know some people do not interpret salat as ritual prayer but I am convinced that it is ritual prayer.
However, I find it really hard to pray at work because I don't wear the hijab and obviously as Quran alone Muslims, we pray differently. The thing about my workplace is there's no prayer room so if you pray, your co-workers will most likely see you praying. A lot of my co-workers happen to be traditional Muslims. It's so awkward! I don't pray at work, only at home. I feel guilty about this because I miss prayers because of it. Can I not just pray in my head? I've also thought about wearing a headscarf whilst praying to avoid criticism but wouldn't that be people-pleasing? Is it okay to do this to avoid judgment?
Do you pray at work? How do you deal with this situation?

Salaam. Salat or solat to me is commitment and from the root word SLW we also can find solu, soli, yusolu yusoli yaslu solawa that can be commit or committed instead of commitment. Thank you. Peace

Salaam,
just a reminder..443 O you who believe, do not come near the Commitment while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying.
Don't make commitments to other people while you're drunk, whether it's in business, romance, deals, or anything that requires a commitment.
591 The devil only wants to cause strife between you through intoxicants and gambling, and to turn you away from God' reminder and from the Commitment. Will you be deterred?
since you won't remember what you promised, this could lead you to disagreements, away from your commitment (while you're get drunk). Surely you need to know what you are saying..
Peace

My lovely brother welcome back...
Good to see you...
Salam...
But straight away bit debate. Lol. .
443 is complete verse and it doesn't say only not to near salah when intoxicated... When I look at the complete verse I can't take it as commitment/ethics...but the verse is definitely Salah/worship God.. If you take only what you highlighted it may look profound and right... But in complete sense with complete picture if the verse 443 it but worship God ie salah timed Salat... Pls apply logic to entire verse and why one can't do commitment after having sexWelcome you negative inputs...

It is ironic as well as interesting that the folks who follow Quran only for guidance can not converge the very essential concept "Prayer" / ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ which is mentioned numerous times in Quran with multiple contexts.
Source https//www.parwez.tv/download/books/Lughat/VIV.pdf
"This means their prayers in which some words are recited and some acts performed (i.e. soulless praying).
Just think and observe that today’s prayers where we simply recite some words whose meanings we do
not know, and do some movements about which we do not know why these are performed? Although the
Quran had directed to establish salaat which is a means of bringing change of minds and thinking and the
source of bringing a revolution in a society, the society where every man would be aware as to what he
was doing and why? And what will be its result? Every aspect of Deen has a purpose and helps attain the
high ideal of humanity. But when the real purpose of Deen becomes obscured then these life giving links
of that program (Deen) are reduced simply to being a custom, part of a meaningless worship, and the
rituals are then performed thinking as if these are the very aim. At this juncture Deen (Way of life) is
reduced simply to a religion." -
Salaam,
Don't be bothered by what other people think.2945 Recite what is inspired to you of the Book and uphold the Commitment, for the commitment prohibits immorality and evil deeds; but certainly the remembrance of God is the greatest. God knows everything you do.
Just ask yourself,
If your ritual prayer, contact prayer, or whatever your understanding about salat, makes you a good people, prevents the immorality and evil deeds for you, then we are all move in the same direction.Because I do believe my commitment to what inspired to me from the book will do the same.

Peace all.
Commitment by itself is general and can be applied to various things including the contact prayer. When one says "salat" means commitment, this has no real meaning by itself it needs something with it like a subject, commit to what?As for meaningless rituals ,they are also pointless. If one does not get any benefit ,then they are wasting their time and effort.
Qoran does not ask for meaningless things and certainly GOD does not expect us to waste our time or do meaningless things.
Again if GOD does not need anything why should He expect us to worship Him or do anything for Him?
GOD s instructions and requirements from us are not for Himself ,they are for our wellbeing and benefit.
So let us list some of these requirements from us by GOD and see what can possibly be the aim and benefit to us-1-Submision/ Islam to GOD- The start on the road to the straight path/guidance from GOD.. For one to walk in the light not stay in darkness and confusion.
2- Taqwa- what one can call GOD conscious- To develop a mental attitude and enhance our defence mechanism to combat sins/bad habits/bad morals...By putting GOD on our mind 24/7. Telling yourself often"GOD is watching me"i.e Remembering GOD in all situation for help and assessment ..
3-Doing good deeds/charity /being kind to fill our time with good energy and become busy and productive for our wellbeing and reputation.
4- Looking after our physical body to stay healthy including doing Sawum , exercises,diets...etc.
5- Looking after our spiritual body and mental health by reflection/meditation and connection to our creator to recharge our mental state and grow our soul. This can also be enhanced by the daily contact prayer with GOD Alone - Al Salat- The specific contact prayer that helps the soul to grow and increase taqwa and Iman for our own benefit, not GOD, GOD is doing us a favour not the other way around.
etc
Effort, hard work, perseverance and patience are required.
So some think they are doing GOD a favour by their submission and Iman by worshiping Him?
No guys, GOD is doing us all those of us who want to start on the submission journey ,a favourSo the minimum criteria is be good ,do good and acknowledge our creator, the rest is extra help and more Iman.
The bottom line for us , knowing that we are meeting GOD, is to sincerely do what each understand from their own study of Qoran. We will be asked, for sure, have we pondered/studied /.. GODs revelations/message /instructions or not?. Each has to answer for themselves at GOD.
GOD bless you all.

I believe a total commitment is only a wishful thinking for presence of sins within ourselves (body/soul) is definitely due to the will of God. Had he wanted to create a sinless nation, it would have been done. So one can have an intention to COMMIT NOT to do ABC.. XYZ but in actual fact we all commit sins and we all forget allah that is why he is most forgiving... meaning there needs be us humans full of sins to be forgiven.
Hence I believe salat is a congregational affair in which we need to meet with others on a regular basis and hope to create a better society, a better of us to make an effort to change for the good. Be it any one from any field, the onus is to do good on gods earth.I found some link useful

Peace..
I don't understand what people write here when question is something else..In a nutshell Quran has many meanings for Salat or its root.. And pls apply what God meant for particular verse.. Taking everything one meaning is mere violation of context of verses and its meaning.. I know everyone is not guided but at least we can strive (jihad) hard to grasp it..
I will make your research easy In sha Allah... But that also depend how you perceive... For those whom the guidance is meant no one can do that... At least true believers would get.. By writing if any of the believers benefit then it is inviting fellow believers... That's my intention here in the forum..
Here is the verse..
417 Those who give not the Zakat and they are disbelievers in the Hereafter.
Now reflect what Zaka is when God incorporate Zaka eith Salat in many a verses... Take all those verses where Zaka and Salat is mentioned...use sense..look at the context where it presents and decide whether for Salat becomes Prayer and Zakat becomes obligatory Charity... Sorry to say.. Sheer Nonesencical resolution...
How can who doesn't give Zakath (if taken as obligatory charity) be a disbeliver...? Impossible... Allah has already said sadaqa that is charity.. No burden on human double type of charity...
Yes.. Zakath is not at all obligatory charity... But Zakath is Purification of a Soul... And how one get purified if his morals / Ethics / Conduct are not decent...Read all Sala and Zakath verses when they are together... They are never Charity nor Prayer..
But Sala is prayer as well in few verses as salah is blessings in few verses, as salah is support in few verses as sala or its root in some verses closely following.. Etc..
I am ready if anyone brings proof Salat and Zakath mentioned together in such and such verses are prayer and charity.. Well bring.. Let's debate.. But with logic...
As brother Tilihawa brought 2945 ... I do agree he has not taken it as prayer.. But he says it is commitment.. Never mind.. Yes when morals /ethics / conduct are decent one is committed.. This he purifies the self /soul.. Yes.. Verse 2945 is clear.. Once conducts decent and intention is right he purifies and that atmosphere makes one away from Fahisha (disgusting actions mainly sex related) and Munkar bad or evil things... The one who is so careful in his conduct and purifies daily is most likely that he keeps away fahisha and Munkar and not the one who parrot and pray and it is obvious also...

If you look closely at ' The Lists of Meanings ' from the root word of Sad-Lam-Waw one cannot help but the word commitment is the main meaning of all the listed meaning of Salat. Now let's see the listed meanings;
ص ل و = Sad-Lam-Waw = prayer, supplication, petition, oration, eulogy, benediction, commendation, blessing, honour, magnify, bring forth, follow closely, walk/follow behind closely, to remain attached.
In a horse race when the second horse follows the first one so closely that its head always overlaps the first horse’s body that horse is called AL-MUSSALLI (i.e. the one who follows closely / remains attached).
Central portion of the back, portion from where the tail of an animal comes out, the rump.musalla (مصلي) n. m. - 2125
salat (صلاة) n. f. sing. - 23, 243, 245, 283, 2110, 2153, 2177, 2238, 2277, 443, 477, 4101, 4102, 4103, 4103, 4103, 4142, 4162, 56, 512, 555, 558, 591, 5106, 672, 692, 6162, 7170, 83, 835, 95, 911, 918, 954, 971, 9103, 1087, 1187, 11114, 1322, 1431, 1437, 1440, 1778, 17110, 1931, 1955, 1959, 2014, 20132, 2173, 2235, 2241, 2278, 232, 2437, 2441, 2456, 2458, 2458, 273, 2945, 2945, 3031, 314, 3117, 3333, 3518, 3529, 4238, 5813, 629, 6210, 7023, 7034, 7320, 985, 1075
salawat (صلوات) nom. gen. n. plu. - 2157, 2238, 999, 2240, 239The meaning of to follow closely, to follow closely behind and to remain attached all indicate that commitment is one of the main meaning of salat especially since the main purpose of Salat is rememberance of God. How can the word commitment in the context of following Allah's guidance closely or remain attached to it be categorized as general? if a professed muslim is not committed to following this God's guidance closely and to the best of his/her ability, is he/she fit to call himself/herself muslim in the first place? How would you translate 6/162?

Salam...
If anyone ask me to translate the word salah in majority of the verses of Quran,, without any hesitation I would translate salah = Integrity in ONE WORD. yes as I said earlier to clarify salah is moral/ethics/ conduct.. But incorporate all into one that is INTEGRITY... I don't blame those who say COMMITMENT... more or less going in line.. But INTEGRITY (the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles)..to perceive the above word Zaka is imperative.. There is reason why God connected in many a places Salah with Zaka... I am not cherry picking.. I am talking all verses where salah and zaka come together.. So I bring one such verse..
2241 Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish Salah (integrity)and bringforth Zaka Enrichment / Purifcation and Enjoin Ma'ruf (good) and Desist Munkar (evil) . ..... ".
Above verse reminds you something... Do you get it..? Yes.. Whenever Leaders of Nations address the people of Nations on special occasions like independent day or National Day etc.. They are parroting the above verse.. They have no intention to do so.. What they say.. They say.. " we guaranty you soverienty and INTEGRITY and thus bringforth ENRICHMENT..
well.. God says those who are in fact believers when they are given Authority and power They establish no Prayer and obligatory charity for themselves neither to people but they establish INTEGRITY and bringforth ENRICHMENT /PURIFICATION.. they don't force people to do but they themselves in the complete governement they establish this..
Unless you get what ZAKATH is in Quran you will never get what Salah is in majority of verses in Quran...
Sahih Translation.. 2177 "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask , and for freeing slaves; establishes prayer and gives zakah; fulfill their promise when they promise; and are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.
In this verse complete charity is explainined in manifest way as I have highlighted then why again Zakah... No way.. Allah is not Taxing agent... Apply INTEGRITY AND PURIFICATION to the verse how beautiful God's explanation..
As I presented earlier thread 417 why those who not (Zakath) are disblievers in hereafter is coz they have not purified (zaki) the soul as verse 918 indicates clearly..
So brothers and sisters reflect.. Salah in Quran is INTEGRITY, Prayer, blessings, support, be attached or follow closely etc but majority of verses are INTEGRITY... I don't mind those who take as COMMITMENT but INTEGRITY confines the meaning to its reality rather than commitment are diverse.. But not all verses of Quran are INTEGRITY...
read and understand... It is your life... My duty I present what I got from inspiration while explore Quran... Any objections are so much welcome so that I can reflect in sha Allah...
-
You are very much welcome.
Peace Nomar..
May Allah bless you with guidance and constant faith until you reach to Him...
Sorry for typo.. Hope you got what I have written in true sense..
Thank you so much and keep up good works in life and leave the decision of judgment to God..

Nice articles, Yes connection gives the right meaning, many culture do salat, I believe its no different here, the ritual is also part of this, the important part of Salat i think was people to promise something to God in return of some blessings/wish, the Zakat is the result of it. Its a way to connect with God, praise and ask for specific blessings, promise to do zakat/service/goodness for the community/family/near ones. In a way it brings our focus to our duty. Those who establish Salat should have a compiled list of promises to be recited on Salat.
