How do rational Muslims (those Muslims who don't believe in miracles and explain them rationally, like Mufti Abu Layth) explain the following miracles

    • Prophet Musa's staff consuming magicians' conjurations (Qur'an 2645) (I know they think the magic tricks were all just illusions, but then why would the magicians suddenly believe in Allah if what they did were just magic tricks?)

    • Prophet Sulaiman and the spring of liquid copper (Qur'an 3412)

    • Prophet Sulaiman spoke to birds (Qur'an 2722 and 3819)

    • Prophet Yaqub's clothes curing his father's blindness (Qur'an 1293)

    • Prophet Uzair died for 100 years and was revived (Qur'an 2259)

    • The dwellers of the cave slept for years (Qur'an 1811) (How do you explain that they survived for years without food and water? The Qur'an is very clear that they slept for years).

      Never mind all that.
Have we even found out the following?
How do we come out alive and kicking from our mummy s tummy after growing from a single cell to a human baby inside it?
How did the different plants and trees started out on earth in the first place.?
Why do we sleep? What is sleep?
... And so many unknown stuff about facts that we just take for granted and science has still not found out how they happen!
Qoran is for the believers regardless of miracles. To us miracles are a lot of things we cannot do or understand. To GOD there are no miracles . GOD has the knowledge, laws and expertise to create, shape and repeat different process of creation and recreation.

Some believe in miracles others do no,but that is all irrelevant since we have not grasped a lot of what GOD can do.
GOD told those who believe and they accept His version of the story. However each one of them is entitled to understand them according to their own reasoning/pondering.
      GOD bless you.
      Peace

There are various threads and youtube videos discussing them. I recall one book dealt with some

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Plus what is the definition of Miracle? An event could have been seen as a Miracle to a man (from just 200 years ago) whosuddenly appears in our lives today and witness for example modern inventions which will appear to him far more miraculous than what you asked.
As GL pointed out look at ourselves, and look at the seed which grows and becomes a strong tree. Look at the cow who eats and gives refreshing Milk to you. can man produce likes of it?

Whether those verses you mentioned are metaphors or real events happened defying the science is matter of your own interpretations. think what you may feel best from inner voice.

            Peace zigazigha

There is no miracle in the following verses

            1. The magicians believed Prophet Moses as he exposed their lies. No one knew the tricks and illusions except the magicians and only a true Prophet could expose their lies (Chapter 1952 states God informed Moses about magicians' lies in private conversation just like he informed Prophet Noah how to build a ship and helped Ayub alahissalam, when he was touched by Cobra, Chapter 3844). If you read Chapter 20 56-70, they already believed in Moses when he gave a speech before the showdown (The details of the speech are in other verses in the Quran). They hesitated and disputed over their affairs among themselves. They were not fully convinced that Moses knew their lies through revelation as all their information regarding Moses was hearsay although, in the back of their minds, they already accepted him as a prophet. Also, bear in mind that Moses suggested the venue to expose them in front of the crowd. There is nowhere in the Quran that says Moses' staff turned into a snake during the showdown. He only threw the staff at the right time when God asked him to do and exposed their lies. The magicians knew that no one can get this information except a true Prophet hence believing in Moses.

            2. You can observe this in any steel manufacturing plant. So, there is no miracle.

            3. Some of our most well-known birds have human names. None more familiar than the robin – many people’s favourite bird in the UK. Unique bird names for baby boys include Corbin, which means crow, and Lonan, which means blackbird. So, I cannot find any miracle.

            4. Please show me one verse from the Quran where it states Prophet Yaqub's father was blind. I do not want to go into detail. There are words in this verse which need some explanation and due to preconceived ideas most translators translate the verse wrong.

            5. No mention of Prophet Uzair in the Quran and neither in the verse in question. So again, no miracle. It was just a dream.

            6. The words "darabna ala azan-i-him" means God caused them to remain cut off - physically or metaphorically - from the sounds and
the bustle of the outside world. Holy Qur’ån neither supports the story of these men remaining in the cave for hundreds of years, nor of their being actually in a condition of continuous sleep all this while.

            Best regards,
            NK

2950 But they say, "Why are not signs (Ayaa) sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allah , and I am only a clear warner."

1020 "And they say, "Why is a sign(Ayaa) not sent down to him from his Lord?" ,,, ...

              Salam..
If one doesn't understand the Quran be silent until you understand instead of uttering whatever comes to mind out of whimsical approach...

Above two verses are very clear that people of of Mohamed were asking (Aaya) not Quranic verses from Mohamed but Aaya (signs /miracles manifest).. Mohamed were being sent Ayaa already in the form of Quran so no point of asking why not send Aaya (verses) ... So what they were asking is not Verses (Aaya) but they were asking Aaya/miracles..

So dear friends it is very clear that there were miracles / signs (Ayaa) were sent before Mohamed's time and they want such miracles...
So what these Aaya (signs/miracles) were?
Indeed they were from Allah and only Allah could do them.. And they are supernatural that is to say away from the Norma of this nature or of this system...
Only reason God sent miracles to such and such community was to WARN them additionally to Messenger's warning since they were adament and outrageous..

1759 "And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs (Aaya/miracles) except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.

Miracles are only warning but verses are warning and glad tidings..
So don't be adament on what God has sent as miracles to past nations as sheer warning to them which no human could perform or bring but still they denied the miracle in the form of warning for them to make them believe in God.. Unfortunate is their decision..

It is ridiculous if one takr God's miracles as mataphore just go in line with natural system as if God can't go beyond natural system.. So manipulate verses of God to adapt them to look as mataphore.. Unfortunate is their blasphemy.. Who will get guided other than believrs from God's book.
              Thank you..
Note bring a verse of miracle from Quran and debate with me with logic if you can if you say that is not miracle but metaphor... Let readers decide who speaks the truth.. If anyone accepts challenge I am ready.. Well thank you again..

In that case the majority of GOD s words are metaphors. And most of the people and their stories did not actually happen!

I mean has Moses split the sea/ for Beni Israel to cross it? Did Jesus speak in the crib/ Did...many other history in Qoran happen or are they just metaphors?

Besides , can one really explain things they did not witness or do they just take GOD s words for it? Or is it to do with understanding GOD s words?
But GOD tells us there are Angels, Jinns, Ghaib...etc How can we even begin to prove these Ghaib statements?
Yet GOD says "Those who believe in Ghaib"!,Does one has to have faith only or can our reason and logic sort out things that we cannot get to prove ?

Anyway , here are some verses to think about and ponder

Those who disbelieved say, "If only a sign/ miracle/Aaya could come down to him from his Lord (we will then believe)." You are simply a warner - every community receives a guiding teacher.
                ...
The Knower of all secrets and declarations; the Supreme, the Most High.
It is the same whether you conceal your thoughts, or declare them, or hide in the darkness of the night, or act in the daylight.
Shifts (of angels) take turns, staying with each one of you - they are in front of you and behind you. They stay with you, and guard you in accordance with God's commands. Thus, God does not change the condition of any people unless they themselves make the decision to change. If God wills any hardship for any people, no force can stop it. For they have none beside Him as Lord and Master.

Are these Angels /recorders just a metaphor - We do not feel or see anything around us, do we?-
                Let us carry on

He is the One who shows you the lightning as a source of fear, as well as hope, and He initiates the loaded clouds.
The thunder praises His glory, and so do the angels, out of reverence for Him. He sends the lightning bolts, which strike in accordance with His will. Yet, they argue about God, though His power is awesome.

Most of what GOD does and sets up is a miracle to us or who does them?

Imploring Him is the only legitimate supplication, while the idols they implore beside Him, cannot ever respond. Thus, they are like those who stretch their hands to the water, but nothing reaches their mouths. The supplications of the disbelievers are in vain.

Has not all Creations Submitted to God?

To God Ysjudu everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the mornings and the evenings.*

Or can the believers and disbelievers control their heartbeats, their lungs, or peristalsis or change the day/night or...

Say, "Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?" Say, "God." Say, "Why then do you set up besides Him masters who do not possess any power to benefit or harm even themselves?" Say, "Is the blind the same as the seer? Is darkness the same as the light?" Have they found idols besides God who created creations similar to His creations, to the point of not distinguishing the two creations? Say, "God is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Supreme."

One simply must acknowledge the truth when it comes to Truth vs Falsehood. Like the metaphor below advises

He sends down water from the sky, causing the valleys to overflow, then the rapids produce abundant foam. Similarly, when they use fire to refine metals for their jewelry or equipment, foam is produced. God thus cites analogies for the truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it goes to waste, while that which benefits the people stays close to the ground. God thus cites the analogies.
Those who respond to their Lord deserve the good rewards. As for those who failed to respond to Him, if they possessed everything on earth - even twice as much - they would readily give it up as ransom. They have incurred the worst reckoning, ...

It comes down toBelievers Versus Disbelievers

Is one who recognizes that your Lord's revelations to you are the truth equal to one who is blind? Only those who possess intelligence will take heed.

However, all is well if one is following the right path
Those who believe and lead a righteous life have deserved happiness and a joyous destiny.
                GOD bless you all.
                Peace.

Thanks to GL and JK for such insightful replies.
I believe that the verses in the Quran that are often considered miraculous are generally to be both literal and metaphorical, depending on the context in which they are used. We do all ack that Quran is the word of God and contains both literal truths and metaphors that provide deeper meaning and insight.

For example, when the Quran describes the creation of the universe in six days, do we interpret this as a literal description of the physical process of creation, or see it as a metaphorical explanation of the order and structure that underlies the universe.

Similarly, when the Quran describes the miracles performed by the prophets, such as the splitting of the sea by Prophet Moses or the healing of the blind by Prophet Jesus, do we believe these events to be literal historical occurrences, or metaphors for the power and compassion of God.

In short, interpretation depends on the context and the individual reader's understanding. There is nothing challenge or go for a debate.

I am sure God will further clarify to both of you or every one else who is interested (for many they don't bothers except just follows Quran actual message of Guidance) on the day of Judgement or perhaps even earlier.

                  2259
Or, (do you not know) the example of the one who passed through a town that had collapsed on its roofs. He said “How shall Allah revive this after it is dead?” So, Allah made him dead for a hundred years, then raised him saying “How long did you remain (in this state)?” He said “I remained for a day or part of a day”. Said He “Rather, you remained (dead) for a hundred years. Just look at your food and your drink; it has not spoiled. Now look at your donkey. (We did) this to make you a sign for people! Look at the bones, how We raise them, then dress them with flesh.” So, when it was clear to him, he said “I know that Allah is Powerful over everything.”

                  One Quranists translation published
(From Laws relating to an individual’s life and death We now move to the Laws relating to the life and death of nations.) As is known in history, after the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, the Bani-Isr’ael lived in captivity for about a hundred years. Then they were liberated and re-established in Jerusalem. This story has been narrated in the Quran symbolically as follows A person passing through a ruined habitation asked if such a devastated place could have new life. Allah kept him in a death-like state for a hundred years, then gave him new life and asked him “How long have you remained in this state?” He replied “May be a day or so.” Allah said to him “You have been in this state for a hundred years but your food and drink has not gone bad and your ass is still standing as before. You should also reflect upon the process by which man develops from the embryonic state to where he becomes a living human being.” When the passer-by had reflected upon the parable, he said “Now I can understand how Allah can give life to dead nations.”

For me I care not so much as I know God is capable of everything and the Sunni version could be right or the other one (as am sure verses in Quran or a story must have a context)

peace — best to address one miracle at a time e.g., the story of the young men in the cave was definitely paranormal although exact time was speculation clearly stated starting in verse 1822 then switches mid-verse saying their number is conjecture then again continues with more speculation in verse 1825 which provides some information about the calculations they were using to measure time, such as the use of lunar months and regular months, which leads to a total of three hundred years.

                    (12 lunar months * 300) + (9 * 12 solar months) = 300.06 years

However, the final verse refutes this calculation as mere speculation, leaving the actual duration of the young men's stay in the cave a mystery.

First of all brothers and sisters perceive the intention of signs/miracles ... Yes.. None but Warning.. Everything which Quran mentioned which is supernatural was not signs /miracles to warn certain community...

                      Two types they are ...
Signs / miracles (supernatural) to warn the defying people in order they may reflect.. For example Musa brought signs to Pharoa.. For instance stick turning into a real creature moving.. It is a warning.. Similar Isa curing leprosy...

Second type.. Signs / miracles (supernatural) ... No warning at all.. Just God is showing His power and what He can do.. His own way.. For example creation of Isa.. It is not a warning for defying people but God wanted to create him in the way He preferred.. In fact there is lot one to reflect in this super natural Sign /miracle but not warning.. Another example.. shirt of Yousuf and clear sight of Yaqub.. These are not warning.. But definitely lot to ponder for readers..

Signs miracles / super natural (Ayaa) are warning specifically God showed to warn certain community and they were meant to witness by people with INTENT.. Had they denied signs then it is their destiny...

Signs /miracles /supetnatural they were not warning and not necessarily meant to witness by people to get warned... Some people may see such signs still but not warning with INTENT.. Even musa splitting the sea is not a sign /miracle though it is supernatural but it was God's way and favor not a warning.. And that was used to destroy pharou and crew.. Not a sign to warn them.. Allah did what He could in supernatural way...

Remember again Signs /miracles are only to WARN..

ponder some destructions took place in the past is absolutely supernatural and such destruction patten is not at all exists in natural disaster now.. Reflect all types of destructions fallen on certain people in the past.. For example Lut's people distruction... Is it natural..? No way..

So don't confuse God's WARNINGS in the form of Ayaa / signs / miracles with God's supernatural way of other DEALING...

To end this.. Let me ask a question... Is there anyone who is brave enough to say that Isa was born in natural way according to Quran ? If you accept it is supernatural then don't denigrade God's power into metaphors.. If you say Isa was born natural way, then bring evidence within Quran...

Even warning Signs/miracles or No warning Signs/miracles, they all from Allah and they were supernatural.. If you can't quite agree with science the super natural incidents, then you have some wrong assumption about the ability of God... Yes God created everything with a system and it doesn't mean the Creator can't go beyond the system to make it supernatural..
                      Thank you..

Note.. If anyone ready you can debate. Let me know.. There is nothing wrong in debate between believers.. It is only will expose truth...

«Allah guides whom He wills and lets astray whom He wills«.
So take as metaphors or literal but Allah knows the truth.. Ensure that you or me don't speak agaisnt the truth.. So debate and clear doubts or remain as you wish.. Or else beg to God for guidance eith teuth so that we don't speak against His verses without knowledge..
