What do you do if you can't fast?
-
Hi y'all
I have a small question. I am hypoglycemic, and have a long and nasty history of Anorexia Nervosa. cry Consequently, I can't fast. If I fast, things turn bad. Real bad. Real quick. twisted My problem is that the fast, and the concept of the fast, is quite clear in the holy Quran, and I am at a real loss to know what to do during this period. I know that I can "feed a poor person" etc etc, but in our modern world that is not as easy as it sounds.
Is there anybody out there in a similar situation to me? Is there anybody else who, for whatever reason, simply cannot fast? what solutions do you have? My solution has been to look on Ramadan as kind of like "Lent" (OK, ex-catholic talking!), where I give up those things that are luxuries and remember the true values of life and that others aren't as lucky as I am. I also save the money I would spend on luxuries and at the end of the period donated it to charity (in my case, the one which I sponsor a child through). I managed to save quite a bit of money last time (my first Ramadan) simply by giving up chocolate and ice-cream and pre-packaged meals for healthy, natural alternatives.
Am I on the right track? Any reflections anyone can give me on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Peace!

Peace flossy lol
i have a similar problem, when i fast i often have either hypoglicemic reations or just a kind of breakdown with very low blood pressure. My heartbeat sometimes goes done to 40 a minute ...
some other times i do not have these problems and there were years i could fast the whole month without problem, but the older i get...
nowadays, in order not to have these breakdowns, can't afford them as a full time working mother of two, i stopped fasting in a row and just do what i can. i compensate by giving food to the poor - when in france i contributed more than usual to 'heart restaurants', here in Morocco i give to an orphanage. there are always ways of compensating and fasting is not a must
don't know if u read the relevant threads on fasting, layth and ayman articles ?

Peace flossymoo,
O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you as it was decreed for those before you perhaps you may be righteous.
A few number of days. Whoever of you is ill or traveling, then the same number from different days; and as for those who can do so but with difficulty, they may redeem by feeding the needy. And whoever does good voluntarily, then it is better for him. And if you fast it is better for you if you knew.I hope this helps )

Peace flossymoo,
As zenje quoted
Whoever of you is ill or traveling, then the same number from different days; and as for those who can do so but with difficulty, they may redeem by feeding the needy. And whoever does good voluntarily, then it is better for him.You have an illness and Allah knows best and he knows your heart..So if one cannot out of their own pocket feed the needy for the prescribed days, then as it says whoever does good voluntarily,I see know reason why one couldnt volunteer to work at a Soup kitchen that feeds the needy..for the prescribed times..
I used to attend a church that believed in fasting on Yom Kippur/Day of Atonement, but they believed that if a person was ill and could not fast the entire day, that they could maybe skip one meal,I am not sure if this would be allowed though under Quran.Maybe some one else could answer this one.
But it seems that as mentioned that one could volunteer at a soup kitchen...to help feed the needy..If there is not one in your area, then maybe you could donate something to one or to a local charity that helps out the hungry like Elke mentioned..
