Quranic Evidence Designating Cows as Persons
-
Salamu Alaykum,
I am writing to present textual evidence from both the Quran and the Bible that supports recognizing animals — particularly cows — as persons entitled to legal protections, including the right to life. These ancient sources align with modern concepts of animal sentience, equal protection, and justice-based legal frameworks.Quranic Foundations (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:71-73):
The text explicitly designates the cow as “a person” who has been murdered:“And you had murdered a person, then disputed in the matter… We said: ‘Strike him with parts from it.’ It is thus that God brings the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you may comprehend.”
This direct classification frames cow slaughter as homicide, providing a basis for granting cows legal personhood and equal protection under the law.
Additional Quranic Principle (Surah Al-An’am / Surah 6):
Surah 6 presents a broad ethical standard for all life: “Do not kill the soul which God has forbidden, except in justice” (6:151). The surah emphasizes that killing — whether human or animal — is not permitted by default, custom, or appetite, but only when clear justice (necessity, defense) can be proven. It questions assumptions rooted in desire rather than knowledge, reinforcing that all souls possess inherent sanctity.Biblical Parallel – Bloodguilt and Moral Accountability:
The story of Cain and Abel, along with related texts (Proverbs 28:17 and Deuteronomy 19), illustrates that taking animal life carries bloodguilt. Even ritual or socially sanctioned slaughter accumulates moral responsibility. The framework distinguishes intentional killing (which demands full accountability) from accidental harm, treating the unjust taking of life as a serious violation with real consequences. This extends to collective practices, showing that systemic animal exploitation creates structural moral responsibility.Together, these sources converge on a consistent principle: animals are not mere property or commodities. They are sentient beings whose lives carry moral and legal weight. Designating cows (and by extension other animals) as persons aligns with scientific evidence on their cognition, emotional capacity, and social complexity. It also supports extending equal protection principles — similar to those in the Fourteenth Amendment — to prevent arbitrary discrimination based on species.
Policy Recommendations:
In light of these traditions and contemporary understanding of animal sentience, I urge you to support:Legal recognition of cows and other farmed animals as persons with protected rights to life.
Classification of unnecessary or commercial slaughter as a form of murder or unjust killing.
Legislation shifting from property-based animal law to rights-based or guardianship models.
Policies that prioritize justice and necessity over habit, tradition, or industry convenience.
This approach is consistent with the “Life and Labor” philosophy of granting animals equal protection under the law as autonomous, sentient beings.Hamduillah

While I agree in general that all creatures are GOD s creations and are similar to our human communities as below:
All the creatures on earth, and all the birds that fly with wings, are communities like you. We did not leave anything out of this book.** To their Lord, all these creatures will be summoned
Animals ,birds, other creatures, unlike the humans, are not here to be tested like humans . They have already accepted their submission, and are fulfilling the role they accepted . They will share earth with the humans and will be gathered to GOD with us.
Sharing earth with them and the plants. mountains and all kinds of other living and non living elements/things of GOD ,we have to respect all and look after /be responsible for, to keep them...
So for example what is the role of the domesticated animals-Aanams- ?:
GOD has set up earth for us as a living planet and provided everything we need to live here:He is the One who established gardens, trellised and untrellised, and palm trees, and crops with different tastes, and olives, and pomegranate - fruits that are similar, yet dissimilar. Eat from their fruits [if they ripen], and give the due alms on the day of harvest, and do not waste anything. He does not love the wasters.
Some livestock supply you with transportation, as well as bedding materials.
Eat from God's provisions to you, and do not follow the steps of Satan; he is your most ardent enemy.
Eight kinds of livestock: regarding the two kinds of sheep, and the two kinds of goats, say, "Is it the two males that He prohibited, or the two females, or the contents of the wombs of the two females? Tell me what you know, if you are truthful."
Regarding the two kinds of camels, and the two kinds of cattle, say, "Is it the two males that He prohibited, or the two females, or the contents of the wombs of the two females? Were you witnesses when God decreed such prohibitions for you? Who is more evil than those who invent such lies and attribute them to God? They thus mislead the people without knowledge. God does not guide such evil people."
Say, "I do not find in the revelations given to me any food that is prohibited for any eater except: (1) carrion, (2) running blood, (3) the meat* of pigs, for it is contaminated, and (4) the meat of animals blasphemously dedicated to other than God." If one is forced (to eat these), without being deliberate or malicious, then your Lord is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
For those who are Jewish we prohibited animals with undivided hoofs; and of the cattle and sheep we prohibited the fat, except that which is carried on their backs, or in the viscera, or mixed with bones. That was a retribution for their transgressions, and we are truthful.
So the role of livestock is clarified , all farming stock benefits the humans and provides for the farmers. If livestock are not used for food thn what is the solution for farming?
Of course I agree no cruelty to animals, plants or destruction of beautiful places on GOD s earth.
Thank you for initiating this thread.
GOD bless you.
Peace. -
The Quran mentions a murdered human and a sacrificed cow in the same passage. Turning the cow into the murdered person is NOT an interpretation but it's rewriting the text to your own wishes and influenced by external idea being projected into Quran.
@Good logic: The original post seemed to single out cows specifically using Chapter Al-Baqarah, which makes that conclusion feel more selective than textual.

slamu laykum. hamduillah for replies.
@Fusion I am aware of the 'classical tafsir' regarding this passage. I argue my interpretation is more Quranic (against the bloodshed of an unaggressive animal, and for equality in interactions). If you can find a reason why a person was murdered in Quran without having to refer to the greater context of cultural inheritance, I'd like to see it. As far as I can tell, someone tells them "Allah commands you to sacrifice a heifer" and the many people argue with them. Then they finally concede and kill the animal and the bloodguilt is upon them ("You had murdered a person"). Then the people resolve, by Allah, to bring punishment to who killed the animal. This is perfectly moralistic and in compatibility with the general idea espoused in Quran. Alternate interpretations are, in my opinion, more questionable, no matter how entrenched in society. This is the real reason I posted here.@good-logic You quote these verses from their context and it is true that there are many verses in Quran which seem to indicate that the animals were given to us from Allah in order for us to eat the animals. HOWEVER, if you read them carefully, how many of them correspond with some uncertainty, or hardship -- especially those 'being driven from their homes', which I posit is a common problem that results from the bloodguilt on the animal killing (Deuteronomy 19:5 ... people who eat animals don't hate animals in their heart and thus have the opportunity to flee to city of refuge. they're accursed by proverbs 28 "let no one help them"). It is not that I am saying that Quran doesn't say anywhere to kill animals to eat them, yet I am saying, in this particular passage, it seems likely that the intention was to be against animal killing. Other parts of the Quran, revealed at different times, passed down by different people, etc. maybe did not have this wisdom in them. At any rate, I testify that Quran bears witness of the bloodguilt curse upon the animals even by the verses which you cite, when that surah which mentions the killing in favor, then, after condoning killing animals, becomes subjected itself (the surah) to the curse!
INSHA-ALLAH I encourage everyone to perform this exercise, to read the Quran through an pay close attention to when animal killing is mentioned anywhere in it. See then, how it transpires thereafter. If the topic of that surah changes to equality between classifications (humans and animals are equally protected from murder), or being driven from their homes (bloodguilt curse for the unintentional killing) or equivalence in justice (bloodguilt curse for the intentional killing) or otherwise is hung up on an injustice related to the one created by the killing of animals

I understand your broader ethical reading but my point was only about the wording of the passage itself. I still see two separate elements in the text: a sacrificed cow and a murdered person.
Beyond that I think readers can weigh the passage and decide which interpretation fits the text more naturally

Peace cybersailor
Thank you for your thoughts.
While the human lives on earth ,the human has the upper hand on animals, plants and natural places.
Also the human can be good, bad and "ugly", sometimes all of these. If the human has an enemy, then they try their best to "eradicate" their problem. Some see life as only according to their "script" and misuse other humans ,animals and everything that stands on their way/mind/... as "inferior"/parasite/...Muslim to GOD means take our responsibilities seriously and seek welfare to all GOD s creatures not warfare on them.
I am saying animals ,plants and other natural creatures have roles to play here on earth and we have ours.
Cruelty to animals applies to all animals. Farming exits throughout the human life cycle and the humans will carry on their good ,bad and ugly behaviours.
I commend all those who call out bad and ugly behaviours and seek peace with all GOD s creatures.
Thank you and GOD bless you.

Salamu Alaykum, thanks for reading and thanks for replies, alhamduillah.
Since posting this topic I have found another example from the Quran. In chapter 37 there is the scene with Abraham and his son. We remember from previously that Abraham had sacrificed a calf for the two visitors who approached him regarding Lot. That makes Abraham guilty of the bloodshed of the innocent. We know that restitution is made by shedding the blood of who shed the blood of the innocent. Because Ishmael is Abrahams son, Ishmael is flesh-of-his-flesh, and blood-of-his-blood. Therefore, Abraham offers Ishmael to atone for the animal sacrifices.
037:107 And We ransomed him with a great animal sacrifice. Wafadaynahu bithibhin AAatheeminSo I propose an alternate reading, where this is understood to be "We ransomed him [Abraham] with a great animal sacrifice [because he was "with" animal sacrifice bloodguilt until ransomed.]"
I didn't see any indication Ishmael survived, and according to my understanding of Allah and justice, Ishmael must have been killed by his father in this scene -- However, that would be a sufficient atonement for the killing of the animal, so that Abraham can go on uncursed. In the next passage, he has Isaac with him for his son instead.
Hamduillah, slamu alaykum
