While some verses state that those who denied the truth in the world will be resurrected and gathered on the Day of Judgment as "blind, deaf, and mute"; another group of verses describes in immense detail how these same individuals see in hell, hear the fire and the screams, and furthermore, engage in heated arguments with the guardians of hell (zabani) and with each other.
At first glance, these two different narratives might be perceived as reflecting contradictory situations. However, when the verses of the Quran are examined with a holistic approach (context and thematic integrity) within the framework of the chronological stages of events, it becomes evident that these scenes complement each other, and that a tremendous psychological depth and a terrifying picture of physical reality lie beneath them.
The scenes of the hereafter are not static and do not consist of a single moment. Each of the stages—resurrection after death (ba's), gathering (hashr), reckoning, and punishment (hell)—creates radical changes in the human level of perception and cognition. In this article, by centering solely on Quranic verses, an in-depth analysis will be made of how the depiction of being created "blind, deaf, and mute" expresses the state of shock at the moment of resurrection, and how this state evolves into the stage of "sharpened cognition" in hell.
Stage 1: The State of Being Blind, Deaf, and Mute (The Stage of Hashr)
The Quran clearly depicts the condition of the deniers at the moment of hashr (resurrection and gathering). The emphasis in these verses is that they are in a state of spiritual helplessness alongside a physical deprivation.Surah Al-Isra, 97: "...And We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection [fallen] on their faces - blind, dumb and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; every time it subsides We increase them in blazing fire."
Surah Ta-Ha, 124-126: "And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind. He will say, 'My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?' [Allah] will say, 'Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten.'"
The blindness, deafness, and muteness expressed in these verses must be understood in several fundamental dimensions. First, it is the spiritual blindness of those who closed their eyes and ears to the truth in the world transforming into a concrete, physical deprivation in the hereafter. Second, it is a functional cancellation: They cannot see anything that will benefit them, relieve them, or save them; they cannot hear good news or a word of consolation. Their tongues are locked; they are in no condition to defend themselves by lying or making excuses as they did in the world.
But the truly striking detail is that this condition is not just a "punishment," but also a natural result of the "terror and shock" brought on by the moment of resurrection.
Stage 2: Shock, Lockdown, and 'Tunnel Vision'
At the moment of resurrection, there is a state of staring blankly at a certain point, running around involuntarily almost like a zombie, and being unable to look around. This situation can be explained by "tunnel vision" and acute stress/shock reaction in psychology.Blindness and deafness are the mind shutting itself off to external stimuli due to the terror of that moment. People are in such a great shock that they cannot see what is happening around them and become unable to hear anyone. They are focused only on that single voice calling them, as if hypnotized:
Surah Ibrahim, 42-43: "...He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in terror]. Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them [fixed, unblinking], and their hearts are void [lost their minds from shock]."
This verse very clearly explains that the blindness is not actually the absence of "eyesight," but rather the gaze freezing in terror and being unable to focus (the eyes not returning to themselves).
Surah Al-Qamar, 7-8: "Their eyes humbled [stricken with terror], they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading. Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, 'This is a difficult Day.'"
Surah Al-Ma'arij, 43: "The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were racing to an erected idol [or a target]."
Surah Qaf, 41-42: "And listen on the Day when the Caller will call out from a place that is near. The Day they will hear the blast [of the Horn] in truth. That is the Day of Emergence [resurrection]."
When all of these verses are read together, the psychology of the hell-bound crowd in the gathering area becomes clear. Eyes are opened wide but "see" nothing. Mental functions have stopped, and willpower has been reset to zero. From the moment they emerge from the grave, everyone flows mechanically, without deviating in any direction, without looking left or right, locked solely onto that terrifying calling voice.
It is exactly at this stage that they are "blind" to the people and events around them, "deaf" to everything except that single calling voice, and too "mute" from fear to speak.
Stage 3: The Sealing of Tongues and the Testimony of Organs
When that initial stage of shock and rushing in the hashr area is completed and the place of reckoning is reached, the state of muteness takes on a different dimension. The disbelievers will attempt to deny and lie, driven by their worldly habits. However, exactly at this point, "muteness" turns into a complete lockdown through divine intervention.Surah Ya-Sin, 65: "That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn."
Surah Fussilat, 20-21: "Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do. And they will say to their skins, 'Why have you testified against us?' They will say, 'We were made to speak by Allah, who has made everything speak; and He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.'"
At this stage, the tongue (nutq), which allows humans to speak of their own free will, is deactivated. The individual watches in terror as their own body testifies against them. This situation is another deprivation that reinforces the spiritual humiliation of "being gathered blind" mentioned in Surah Ta-Ha. The inability to defend oneself and the inability to lie is the exact equivalent in the hereafter of the "muteness" of the smooth-talking, demagogue deniers in the world.
Stage 4: The Lifting of the Veil and Sharpened Cognition (The Hell Stage)
After the reckoning is settled and the truth is revealed in all its bareness, the hell stage begins. It is exactly at this point that the blindness and deafness caused by the shock at the moment of resurrection disappear; replacing them are sharpened senses that perceive reality in the most painful way. The Quran conveys this transformation with a tremendous expression:Surah Qaf, 22: "[It will be said], 'You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is piercing [hadid].'"
That veil over the eyes has been lifted. The shock has been overcome, but it has been replaced by a terrifying cognition. They are no longer blind, deaf, and mute. They must feel, see, and hear the physical and psychological torment of hell with all their cells.
Surah As-Sajdah, 12: "If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], 'Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain.'" (Eyes and ears are fully opened, the truth is confessed.)
Surah Al-Mulk, 7: "When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up." (Deafness has ended, the terrifying sound of hell is being heard.)
Surah Al-Furqan, 11-12: "But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze. When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring."
Surah Ghafir, 47: "And [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, 'Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?'" (Muteness has ended; heated, accusatory, and futile conversations have begun within the fire.)
Surah Az-Zukhruf, 77: "And they will call, 'O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!' He will say, 'Indeed, you will remain.'"
The truths that the disbelievers knowingly closed themselves off to while in the world are given to them at the highest level in hell so that the psychological dimension of the torment is completed. They will see, they will hear, they will beg, but it will provide absolutely no benefit.
Conclusion: The Quran's Miraculous Sequence of Stages
This consistent construct within the Quranic verses themselves proves that the situation of "Being created blind - Seeing in hell," which describes different stages, is actually a chronological and psychological sequence of events.The process depicted for sinners/evildoers in the Quran works as follows:
Shock and Tunnel Vision (Emergence from the Grave): The awakening experienced with the blowing of the Horn (that great call) creates a mind-blowing terror. Eyes are wide open but blank, unable to look around (blindness). Ears respond to nothing but that terrifying call to gather (deafness). Tongues are locked from terror; they are dragged along as a crowd locked onto a target. This stage can truly be explained by a "zombie" metaphor; an unconscious, involuntary, one-way flow.
Lockdown (The Moment of Reckoning): The complete sealing of tongues so they cannot produce excuses in the presence of Allah. Organs speaking out and contradicting their owner. The human helplessly witnessing against their own being.
Sharpened Cognition (Hell): Along with the address "this Day We have removed from you your cover," the truth denied while in the world is perceived in all its clarity. Blindness giving way to seeing the flames, deafness to hearing the screams, and muteness to begging the guardians of hell and other sinners.
Consequently; the Quran presents a flawless literary depiction by blending the psychological stages of the evil/hell-bound human in the hereafter with their physical conditions. The "blindness" in the hereafter is not the absence of eyes, but the inability to see what is beneficial and the lockdown during the moment of shock; whereas "piercing sight" is facing the denied reality and the fire (and other tortures) itself in the most painful way. In hell, they have fully regained all their senses once again. This multi-dimensional narrative of the Quran both correctly analyzes the psychological reactions of human beings in moments of crisis (freezing, narrowing of focus) and reveals the fine details in the manifestation of divine justice.
