CENSORSHIP

peace be upon you Lotetree,
peace be upon you lotetree,
you can't be serious can you? Damon has said a couple of times why he wanted the man bannedHello Idris,
This thread is not about DAMON. This thread about CENSORSHIP in general. How far Free Minds can go regarding censorship.
If you have anything to contribute to this please do so.
Thanks.
Regards,
don't have much to add but I agree with what Layth said
btw I was speaking on this in particular
Recently members on this forum have become polarised on the issue of banning another member from this forum due to their activity in "promoting" certain oppressive nature of Traditional Islam.

Greetings with peace,
So how do you feel about being the subject of that thread?Quite honoured thanks -)
The worse thing is not being talked about -)But this thread is about how far we can go regard to censorship on this forum. If you have any views please put foward it.
Do you think such threads should be censored?
No. I did not mind it to be honest. I was rather worried about the implication the thread had on the rest of the members. Because it introduced an element of fear amongst the forum members. It made members fearful of speaking their mind in case they get called a hypocrite. And I felt this is not the right way to go on this forum since this an open forum...We should be FREE to speak our MINDS here but we should take responsibility for our actions. This is FREEDOM with RESPONISIBILITY as oppose to FREEDOM without RESPONSIBILITY...
Regards,
(I see your ego is still bruised after our last encounter. Please don't take anything personally. It is just debate -)

Foul language (eg. son of a w****), slandering, backbiting etc. etc. should go to the trash.

Are you saying this "It made members fearful of speaking their mind" of other members, or yourself? I think other people can handle themselves.
If someone is fearful of speaking his/her mind here on this forum, then perhaps he/she should be better off by leaving this forum. It's not the right place.
I see now that you are restricting FREEDOM. I had the impression that you believed in unrestricted freedom. By the way, who defines FREEDOM with RESPONISIBILITY?
(I see your ego is still bruised after our last encounter. Please don't take anything personally. It is just debate -)
It's just your opinion.

Peace,
Personally I think that the Quranic etiquettes of discussion is good, the main thing is that we must respect and try to be as kind as possible. I don't like hostility or hatred between members but there are limits, when the limits are transgressed then a ban is good but never before them limits.
If we ban someone for promoting an anti-islam view, that would be wrong in my mind, it would be better to listen and debate on the matter aslong as both sides have good arguements and not senseless namecalling and swearing there is no problem. All forum members should be tolerant, these kinds of discussions in Islam in this society is already controversial and one should expect to hear crazy things!

If you want to discuss FREEDOM with RESPONSIBILITY concepts, please feel free to open a another thread. Lets leave this for censorship -)

Anwar AzimI understand but I thought you wanted to debate FREEDOM with RESPONSIBILITY concept separately?

Salaamun alaikum Layth,
We should only be restricting ourselves by what God and His messenger have restricted us.
Agreed. Does Allah restrict fitnah ? Because al-fitnah is said to be worse than being killed (2/191)
Freedom of religion/faith is allowed according to God's Scripture.
What if your faith demands the blood of others like the jihaadis. That's not allowed, is it.
So is open debate and the exchange of different views no matter how opposite (e.g. Noah and his people, or Abraham and the king).
Yes. OPEN debate in an OPEN space. This is YOUR space. YOUR house, in effect. Would you like people to come to your house, not for gentle conversation, but to tell you at the top of thier voice 'muslims are this and that' and NEVER addressing your responses? If that's the case, no dawa will ever take place.
What is restricted is slander, calling names, backbiting, or any other such despicable acts as outlined in the Scripture
Backbiting ? we're given all sorts of news about ppl we don't know. That's backbiting, isnt it?
Slander. We are given news about people in the world called 'muslims'. Seems to insinuate we belong to that body even though we told him no. -

Also, if albion discusses the things posted in good faith, I see no problem with having albion around. I am here to discuss, not listen to someone doing a monologue. The fact is albion do not want discuss it.

Peace,
I have opened this topic so that we can discuss this important issue on censorship. How far can Free Minds go in regards to censorship?
Like to hear your views on thisI've never seen censorship here or I haven't noticed it.
There have been some requests and suggestions in that direction, I did it once or twice, suggesting deletion instead of trashing, but the hammer here is kind and patient (except in breaks of the 5 forum rules, I am sure). I find this a good example of true tolerance, something easier said than done, at least for me. -
Hi,
As guests we should adhere to the rules of the ?house? we are visiting. The rules of this ?house? are very simple and clear
- Mind your language (foul and/or obsene langauge will not be tolerated).
- Respect other users (this includes personal insults or remarks).
- Do not repeat posts that have been moved or deleted.
- Post in the correct category (posts in the wrong category risk being deleted entirely)
- Do not use multiple usernames.
Limits for what is acceptable under 1 and 2 are up to the ?house-owner?.
Points 3 and 5 are very clear for anyone to understand.
Point 4 may be debatable, but also here the final say is with the ?owner?.Should there be any need to debate these issues?
If anyone does not feel comfortable in the ?house?, then leave, or take this up with the owner directly. Isn?t this how you would behave normally? This forum is one of the most open and serious debate forums on the net, concerning issues dealing with the system of God.
If you know a better one, please show me, or start a new one following your own limits. And I ask you kindly to guide me to it.Best regards
Ali Omar
