I myself have been jobless for more than 7 months, and now strongly believe that I am being discriminated just probably by my Muslim name. Things have changed alot after 9/11, 7/7 etc etc...I am married and expecting my first child. Its very stressful, what can I do? cry

O sorry to hear that. Can I ask what kind of job you are looking for? Like what field?

I'm just a college student right now, goinig to graduate next year God willing, but even thinking about getting a job makes me stressed out >_<

Peace bmbmm. I will give you a call tonight. Remember all the stress i went through in the last 3 years? Well some of my problems are still there, but im reasonably happy now. Why? I re-evaluated the concept(relative) of stress.
A)put your problems into context. In 9 months from now you will be a father. . I can tell you from my experience watching a child born is one of the great and humbling experiences in life.(can be a great motivator too).
A football coach(jose mourhinio) when asked if he was under pressure because his team had lost two games in a row replied; pressure is when people cant feed their children in africa, not pressure from media.(i know your family are helping you as well and you have a place to live.)

Look at the families who survived the tsunami;they are rebuilding their lives as orphans and widows- dont underestimate the potential of the human spirit.
Be grateful for the relative 'ease' of life we have in the west.

b)If you worry excessively you could make the situation more stressful, worry should be productive and proportional.

When i was in egypt i was thrown in jail, then homeless and had no money but i still survived. If you apply your mind( i know you are a very sharp guy, doctor. ) you can get out of this predicament or at least be less stressed.

Worry about the factors you can control, not too much about the factors you cant control.

c)rationalise what is the worse that can happen? Then if it doesnt happen, then be grateful.

d)if a man is hungry, should he worry all the time or go get a mcdonalds?

e)dont forget the stress relievers of life. I know you are a doctor in herbs.

f)if people give you stress about not working, just try to be calm and dont get upset. Try to be patient and re-assure your wife and family.

g)be happy, you have a lot more than many people in africa etc...

I)Finally im sending you some good jinn with some re-assurance,ideas and love to you.

Peace to you , your wife, child to be and family.
ps;dont worry,be happy. (man we need to go to casa locos for some tunn ). Phone me whenever you want,my old friend. wink

          Salam,

Damn, 7 months ain't nothing compared to my time of being jobless. I've been jobless for about 2 years now. I'm not looking either, because I'm planning to go back to school.

Your problem is by the way recognizable. Here in Holland a lot of children of immigrants with an Arabian name also don't get jobs easily. Has to do with the negative press about Arabs I guess.

Goodluck in finding a job. wink

Schools did not help me either, I got a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, but after all being discriminated , although there are lots of jobs out there. I hope you will be OK. I also think that ideas and being self-employed is better, if one could.

            Peace

My advice to you is to leave England where you can't get a job with PHD. Try to relocate to U.S. where you can find a good job with your qualifications and they will be more than happy to have you. You will need the H1 Visa which will not be a problem because of Doctorate.

Following are couple of job sites.

              Hot Jobs

              Monster

              Following is Canadian job board.

              Workoplis

Search and apply to American Universities where your chances of getting immediate offer are very much higer.

              Best luck.

I have applied to USA but not much reply either. I think because of the media, people everywere start sterotyping us. However I will keep on trying as everything belongs to Allah.

                    Salaam Alleikum BMBMM

Try American Universities and believe me Americans have very little discrimination against race color and religion. I go and work in U.S. with a Muslim name with looks more like Latin American and am always treated with respect by immigration no harassment by any law agencies and certainly majority of them are nice with few exceptions.

Also try Canadian Universities and Workoplis you will have no problem with your British Citizenship.

I can search and give you the name of Universities.

My duas with you BMBMM and remember me in your duas.

Thanks KGB, I got some canadian backgrounds and look like Italian. But its the name that people are getting more and more sensitive to. I will keep on trying America and Canada. Even my PhD professor here suggested me to try America.

                      I will keep you informed.

                      Peace

actually, in America it may be more a reaction to the call by citizens to keep usa jobs with usa citizens. It has been a very hot topic in politics over the last fewyears, and YES 9-11 has affected it, but the feeling has been there for sometime. Most people see it as about the same as outsourcing. Might be good for the companies but it sucks for the people trying to find jobs here.

Sawtooth I know what you are saying. I work very legallally because they can't find the right person within U.S. and certainly I don't go to U.S. as cheap labor. I believe you are watching Lou Dobbs racist programs. The guy is against everything which is not American.

Peace. I dont think we should take one example as proof of discrimination in europe. There are muslim politicians in britain.(elected)
