was 'muhammad' really his name?

quran says somewhere that jesus said his (the coming messenger's) name be 'ahmed' (ismuhu ahmadu)! elsewhere it addresses him as 'muhammad'!

if he was referenced as 'ahmed' by jesus, how come he is known as 'muhammad' and quran refers to him as such?

since ahmed and muhammad have both got something to do with 'praise', could it be the 'ism' does not stand for name there, like in some other cases? like maybe his mark would be that he would be praised or something........! and maybe where 'muhammad' is used there is a similar connotation, like maybe marking him out as one who is praised....!
