      Peace and blessings OpenMind

These are the things I do in order during salaat

      Wudu according to the Koran.

Stand facing the Sacred Place of Prostration (the Noble Sanctuary).

Call upon God as "Allah" or "Al Rahman."

Hands are placed behind ears and I say "Allahu Akbar."

Hands are placed on stomach (left on right) and I recite Al-Fatiha in Arabic.

Hands are placed on knees and I bow by bending waist and I say "Allahu Akbar."

I prostrate and say "Alhamdulillah, Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem, Allahu Akbar" thrice each.

I rise up, sitting my knees and feet with head bowed, and I recite Al-Ikhlas.

After the recitation I say "Aslamtu Li Rabbil Alameen" which means "I submit to the Lord of the worlds."

I prostrate once more and say "La Ilaha Illa Allah" which means "there is no god but The God."

This is how i do it. Wash myself (wudu) or take a bath. Try to work on my daily tasks (anything) in accordance with the principles of the Quran and good general knolwledge. What is important is keep reflecting and correcting 1self. lol

To me salat has various forms. At the bottom it is the mental relation/connection with my Lord whom I am going to face on the day of judgment.

            1. Five time formal salat I do it as the Imam of my neighboring mosque taught me. The Imam is a hanafi sunni. I do it in Arabic. It is only a couple of months that I started offering my formal salat but I still do it in my room. I wish I attend in the mosque. Hope to begin going there soon.

            2. Formal extra salat I do it when I get time especially on holidays. I recite Quran in Arabic but for the other things I mix my mother tongue with Arabic. I glorify, praise Allah and pray to Him in my own language, prostrate as long as I wish and say things as much as I wish.

            3. Informal salat I praise, adore and glorify Allah when I see good things. I try to fear Him when I face evil things. With expectation of mercy from Allah, I try to remain patient when bad things befall on me. I try to begin every good work in the name of Allah. I try to refrain from every bad thing for the sake of Allah. I repent and seek His guidance whenever I fall prey to my lust and anger.

              Peace,

I believe there are 3 times mentioned in the Quran, to my best understanding now.

First i wash myself as described in 55

Then i stand, direction doesn't matter, as the qibla is God and our common goal, in groups we just face a direction with no preverence, it depends on the locations and the room we have, so the direction is determined then by the accomodation.

1.I stand, recite Al-Fatiha, as this is the only complete prayer in teh Quran, plus the only one completely directed to God.

2.Then i bow, and i can say what i want, there are some examples in the Quran. As long it is directed to God and remembering Him.

3.Then i stand, and fall on the ground prostrate on my chin, say again what i want. Then i immediately stand up, as kneeling between the prostrations is non-quranic.

4.Then i start over again. I do this twice as the verse of traveling talks about cutting the mechanics in half. So i do 2 rakaa's. And i end with 17111

I don't have all the verses with me as i'm at work, but this is all pure from the Quran to my best understanding. But i'm still investigating, as the bowing can also refer to falling down on your knees and if it are 2 or 3.

So the whole salaat is found in the Quran

              Peace

I have a question, Rashad Khalifa translates "salaat" as "contact prayers" and curious as to why the Progressive Muslims translate salaat as "contact-method" instead of "contact prayers"?

                  Peace,

Salat means contact/following closely/remain attached. In the old quriash language it was not connected with prayer. So when it says salat in the Quran, it says; keep the contact, or follow closely (the Quran).

= Sad-Lam-Waw = prayer, supplication, petition, oration, eulogy, benediction, commendation, blessing, honour, magnifiy, bring forth, follow closely, walk/follow behind closely, to remain attached.
In a horse race when the second horse follows the first one so closely that its head always overlaps the first horse?s body that horse is called AL-MUSSALLI (i.e. the one who follows closely / remains attached).
Central portion of the back, portion from where the tail of an animal comes out, the rump.

                  musalla (&#1610 n. m. - 2125

Ahmed Ali on the meaning of Salat

"Salat as As-sala meant middle of the back, a horse that is second in a race, and as salia-wastala dependence, adherence, attachment. In the Quran salat acquired the conceptual meanings of devotion, adherence to God and His commands, fulfilling one?s duties and obligations as behoves an ?abd, creature, servant, devotee of God, as integral part of ?ubudiyat, servitude and devotion, made clear in 2441 which underlines that every creature in the heavens and the earth knows its salat, duties and obligations. It also means worship as in 855, piety as in 1187, and service of prayer, as in 2238; 443, 101-103; 11114, etc.

The Quran, thus, brings to the mind its real objects from words by invoking the images imbedded in the subconcious. For though the words remain the same, they often acquire new conceptual meanings and new dimensions lying hidden in their roots, which are brought out by the Quran, and now form part of its linguistic and intellectual dynamism. At the same time they become removed from the Jahiliya which was more of an attitude of mind and culture than a state of ignorance, as well as the later world as unfolded by the changing patterns of history, thought and language, so that anyone interpreting the Quran on the basis as used by Arabs today would only misled the readers of the Book."

                    Peace be upon you,

My understanding of salaat is that it is the process of joining with the God through meditation so we can reprogam ourselves according to the Divine Attributes that are with us all. Dawn and dusk are the times of the day when day(consciousness) merges with night(subconciousness/spirit). This is the alpha state. Our normal state is the beta state.

We seek help through patience and salaat. Salaat is our means of CHANGING our behavior, which is what this is all about.

So I slow my breathing down, maintain correct posture and use a mantra to help get myself into the alpha state. Then I use imagination and truthful affirmations to reprogram my subconsious/spirit "nafs" thus purifying(zakaat) it.

This is a process that must be guarded because the alpha state is a state of high receptivity.

                      Peace to all.

The best way to approach this issue is to first understand the purpose/wisdom/meaning of Salaat. This is where I think we have been making mistake.

The language of al-Qur'an is human heart - we can never understand anything about al-Islam until we relate it to the heart. The word 'meaning' or 'wisdom' means the benefit of a thing to the heart.

I still insist that the priority is to become completely free from the inner idol - the self. First thing first

                        Peace be upon you,

Below are the 5 phases or every behavioral event.

                        1. The initaitor of the event which is a situation that comes to the person in the form of a thought, an emotion, an external object, a chellenge, etc.

                        2. A reaction to the situation, which is an Automatic Reflex (not meditated by the conscious part of the brain - a "knee jerk" response), that originates in the subconcious. This reaction is composed of three elements.

                        a) A Verbal Thought that purports to explain the situation, evalutae it, explain the action to be taken, and why, etc. "Why is this happening to me", "He is so stupid", etc.

                        b) An Image that shows the potential consequence of the situation, what action to take, etc. "Image of yelling, running away, being sensually involved, etc. "

                        c) An energy which is teh essence of the emotional component of the reaction.

                        1. An action or inaction according to the verbal thought, image and energy.

                        2. The result of the action. There is success of failure (relative or absolute) depending on whether the action was in harmony or not with the physical or social environment and the goal's of the person's life.

                        3. The emotional sequel to the result of the action. Accordingly there will be pleasure, peace or pain. If there is pleasure with the potential for peace, then tehre will be happiness in the persons life, otherwise there will be unhappiness.

The KEY to the correct outcome of the five chain of events is in the second phase!

We have the ability to REPROGRAM the second part, and this is the purpose of "salaa".

One has to get into the most receptive state in order to be effective in reprogramming. This is the Alpha brain wave state which is the MIDDLE state between being awake and sleep. It is this Medi-state that gives us the word "meditate". It is meditation that allows us to "salaa".

The Word of the God is not useful to us unless we REMEMBER (knee jerk reflex) the Laws of the God (proper behavior) when we get to the crossroads/challenges of life.

Peace simple. If i understand your post, you are saying salat is some kind of questioning to arrive at the truth...I have been saying something similiar for a while now...Salat is the 'connection'/link/reaching out to truth/reality/god....How you do it is up to you...Thinking,meditating,reading,pondering,studying etc... the goal is to achieve a state of 'zakat', or purification from illogical thought/harmful behaviour...
                            Peace all.

Let me try to put it this way

Human beings are in contact with the world via the senses and the brain.

Everything that enters the mind must first pass through the Working Memory (The Attention).

Our behaviour is based on our feelings. Our feelings are based on our thoughts. Our thoughts are based on our beliefs.

We did not enter the world with any belief. We learnt everything here.

We can change our beliefs and hence change ourselves.

To change our beliefs/earlier learning intentionally, we need to work through our attention.

Al-Islam is all about replacing our wrong beliefs with the correct ones by the power of INTENTION/WILL. Only human adults have this ability.

There has to be a strong resolve/decision for a change and this decision has to be kept at the attention to create the necessary change.

The decision to start with the change of self is known as al-Iman.

The preservation of that decision at the attention is known as at-Taqwa.

As-Salaat is part of at-Taqwa and it is meant to keep Allah at the attention as the focus of life.

                                Peace be upon you Omeiza,

Let me try to put it this way

Human beings are in contact with the world via the senses and the brain.

Yes, Consciousness uses the mind which uses the brain which uses the senses.

Everything that enters the mind must first pass through the Working Memory (The Attention).

I dont know if I would use the word Memory to define it, but I am following you.

Our behaviour is based on our feelings. Our feelings are based on our thoughts. Our thoughts are based on our beliefs.

Our bahavior is based on our conditionings (feelings/likes/dislikes/emotions). Our thoughts are based on our conditionings. A belief is just a thought with energy behind it.

We did not enter the world with any belief. We learnt everything here.

Agreed, other than the knowledge of ONENESS, which we lost.

We can change our beliefs and hence change ourselves.

                                I agree 100%

To change our beliefs/earlier learning intentionally, we need to work through our attention.

I am not following what you mean here. My position is that we need to reprogram the subconsious(NAFS), which is where conditionings are stored.

Al-Islam is all about replacing our wrong beliefs with the correct ones by the power of INTENTION/WILL. Only human adults have this ability.

                                I agree.

There has to be a strong resolve/decision for a change and this decision has to be kept at the attention to create the necessary change.

I agree, mostly. But I exchange "attention" for "trance state". Many dont like that word but it is a very normal state that we go into everyday unknowingly.

The decision to start with the change of self is known as al-Iman.

The preservation of that decision at the attention is known as at-Taqwa.

As-Salaat is part of at-Taqwa and it is meant to keep Allah at the attention as the focus of life.

                                What do you say?

I am rushing to respond so I dont want to comment on that just yet before looking carefully, I will respond tommorrow.
