Eye For an Eye Makes The World Go Blind
-
Hello Ash Shura,
If Law of Equivalence means Eye for an Eye, then I am against Eye for an Eye, Tooth for Tooth kind of punishment. I think it is of the past and should be left in the past.
You do realise this is a cliche against the Old testament and has nothing to do with the quran don't you?
Eye for an Eye makes the World go blind - I think Mahatma Gandhi said this? But yes it is Biblical practice and when Ayman mentioned Equivalence I thought he meant that.
I don't ask this question out of malice, you claim to have outgrown the scripture
Yes, I have said I have outgrown scripture just like people here have outgrown hadith and sunnah in one way or another. And just as hadith and sunnah longer have power over the members of Free-Minds so does scripture longer has power over me. But I take from it the Universal Message at the Heart of Scripture Compassion and God-consciousness and try to make it part of my life. That is why when I look at the Universe I am filled with awe and wonderment at the Majesty of the Creator. And my heart fills with joy.
I want to hear exactly how you prevent the injustice against victims. How do you prevent taking care of the criminals but forgetting the victims?
In the UK we have something like "Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority" to help the victim and victims family.
It is a well known feature of big robberies that witnesses are customarily killed, often citing they'll only get a few years and be out. What I want to know is how does your view of justice prevent such a callous way of taking life?
Here in the UK a life sentence can mean a life sentence. And this is being applied to more and more violent criminals. Also there are ways of making prisoners work towards paying compensation to the victim and victims family.

Hello Lote Tree,

Please research and understand the law of equivalence, the if and then statements do not demonstrate knowledge or inspire credibility. Infact, can be considered dismissive.

Whoever said it was in response to the OT! It is crucial to take islam on its own merits instead of employing the cliches widespread. A superficial short cut response will not do.
Yes, I have said I have outgrown scripture
In my view "outgrowth" is not possible, if it were I would expect that to come after the knowledge and wisdom therein being fully comprehended. Your knowledge regarding the law of equivalance makes me think its more of a side step, with all due respects.

I am fully aware of the situation in the UK. However, this view of yours exhibits a naive understanding of the realities. I am sorry, but the knowledge that a bank robber is going to get life which is going to be commutted for good behaviour, and the examples we've seen over the years is not exactly what I would call justice.
Besides, life can mean life is seldom.
Sure, the criminal justice system in the UK is probably the best in the world, but we are discussing perfection. There is always room for improvement. Right now I am doubtful the right of the victims are taken care of.
Peace

No, Ash Ashuura, I asked the question to Ayman to make sure what he meant by the Law of Equivalence. This is how you assertain truth of something spoken by someone else.

OK, thanks for telling me.

With due respects to you, that is OK I was not asking for your view.

Ayman interpretation regarding Law of Equivalence could mean anything. Without asking him first how can I be sure? But now that he explained himself I now know what he means by it.

Sorry Ash Shuura, I did not know that you were UK resident. I thought you were Turkish. How is it naieve. There exists Criminal Compensation Authority here. And Judges can give a life sentence without parole.

If you have problem with sentencing then you can change all that. UK is a democracy after all.
Sure, the criminal justice system in the UK is probably the best in the world, but we are discussing perfection.
Perfection? You don't ask for much do you Ash Shuurah -)
But we can improve and move towards that "perfection". But perfection will be unachieable because we are all flawed human beings. There is always room for improvement. Right now I am doubtful the right of the victims are taken care of.
But people can work together and change all that so that better punishements are administrered.

Peace Lotetree,
I really disagree with the prison system, it does more worse than good in my opinion!
Anyway Ayman replied to your question in another thread, I thought it was a very good answer to your question
It means that the punishment is equivalent to the crime. For example, someone who steals a loaf of bread gets punished by working to repay the bakery not by getting his hands cut off. An eye for an eye is just a metaphor for that.
I really think that societies should start trying this method for thefts and other crimes, it saves a lot of fuss and I don't trust the Inland Revenue. I would rather have more people free. Criminals today live a luxury compared to other people on the street but even then nobody gave the right to take someones freedom. I think that the law of equivalance is a better way to start dealing with crimes.
Prison does not do any good! Yes it keeps a criminal locked up but is that just? Why do I have to pay for his food and the electricity to maintain the buildings in which the prisoners live?! I haven't commited a crime!
