Peace be upon you,
One must always keep thier mind open, if it is closed, nothing you can say or do will change thier condition. I would say that everyone who is here kept thier mind open.
I also went through submission.org as well. Thier articles on hadith were just mindblowing. WHen I took them to the "Imam" and found he had no logical answer, I was left to search on my own, thank the God! D
In fact, he did not even try to answer, he basically warned me of the internet! shock

my inner compass.
whenever i read something that disagreed with it, i had difficulty accepting it. it just so happened that all of the stuff that disagreed with my inner compass happened to be baseless/false tradition/culture nothing to do with islam. it took me a while but i gradually joined the dots and the picture became clearer - i was going to learn from The Teacher , not the students.
I would like to say, the two biggest problems for traditionists, is

their mindset (it has to be open, logical, reflective, questioning etc)

the other is knowledge. I did a questionaaire once and asked traditionists about basic stuff on Islam and the results were a disgrace.

I 'convert' or more exactly 'bail out' from Sunniism upon pondering and realizing the truth on this 'prophetic' hadits from Muhammad Rasullulah..
Abu Sayeed reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said
"You shall follow the practices of those before you, inch by inch and mile by mile, to the degree that if they enter into the hole of a lizard, you will follow them." He was asked "O Messenger of Allah (SAW), are they the Jews and Christians?" He replied "Who else?"IMHO today Suniism and also Shiaism = JudeoChristianism
Too much 'invention' (bidah), clerical dogma and hearsay will surely leads to astray...

So, what was it that changed your mind...or were you always open to other ideas?
I tried to maintain an open mind, yes. What really got me on board however, was the small disclosure of Al-Quran's conceptual power at the time.
There's something about al-quraan that its captures the essential nature of man. The more I see of it, the more I see it cuts through the illusions we carry and gets right down to the things which matter, that which will give us 'salaam' in this life and the next. It's a science of life authored by the one who wrote it in reality.
For a text to do that, to continously prophecise the destiny of man, this merits a continous and intense study of its contents.
I am amazed how Sunnis can say the quran is a mystery without sunna and hadith. Its only without sunna and hadith that al-quraan becomes prominent and can be put back into its place as the arbiter of mankind.

Salaam all,
I was a very strong sunni a couple of years and followed the strict fourth scolar of sunni Imam Shafi.
I was extreme, I had no pictures of the wall if it wasn't the pictures of verses from Quran and so on.
I was covered from top to toe when I went out and if men visit our house.
I was very keen on details but not very fond of hadiths even if I was so extreme.
When I studied on my own I found first submission sites and became first angry when I read it but after awhile I became more curious and wanted more and I started to read Al-Quran on a daily base.
So slowly slowly I became the one I am today Al-Hamdulillah and I hope I will gain more and more knowledge Insha Allah.

Forgive me for going off-topic here, but i have to say. SM, i cant imagine how such a beautiful person, in both heart and beauty, like you could be living in such strict and ridiculous conditions. It makes me cry when i think about it.

Peace all I think the key for me was to be open minded i was and am always open to discussion i was a Deobandi from
my birth than a friend show me books of Hadiths n tell me that Deobandi,s r not following it right i was amused but
when i study it i agree with him n i start using Hadith i used to have a long beared i will wear the cloth over my
ankle i start offering ritual prayers the way Hadiths told me but i was not convinced i start finding problems in
Hadiths than i find submission.org it blow up my mind but there were two things whicih i didn,t feel right about
them one messengership of Rashid Khalifa n the other was the way of Salat i was not convinced than i went to 19.org
from there i found about Free minds i came to Free minds i think my first post was also here about Salat n i find my
answers here i have learn alot here i,m from Pakistan i,m all alone here n Free minds is like a home to me where i
find my brothers n sisters from whom i learn alot n Insahallah i will learn more thank u for reading Peace

I didn't want to put on me the hijjab from the beginning but my husband forced me. And then it was embarrasing to take it off.I weared it during 8 years.
I felt nude and all staring at me!
But now I have been without it for about 4 years.

I was watching a documentry on Islam on the bbc, it concluded that somewhere in middle east (I think Turkey), the 'muslim' scholars' are seeking a new interpretation of Islam that will be more accepted than the tradtitional so that the political powers can become members of the EU and other powerful groups.
The kind of information on this thread could help a group like that, but when groups seek this information and have anything to do with politics, they normally use the knowledge to seek gain for only themselves and not the people.

No I didn't wear niqab(face cover) but my younger sister has worn it before.
But my hijjab was very long and thick!!!!
I'm glad I found a way out of this, Al-Hamdulillah
