Hi there,
I have a question regarding 2044
2043 "Go, both of you, to Pharaoh, for he has transgressed."
2044 "So say to him soft words, perhaps he will remember or take heed."
2045 They said "Our Lord, we fear that he would let loose upon us, or transgress."
2046 He said "Do not fear, I am with you, I hear and I see."Why is god using 'perhaps'? Doesn't god know for sure?
My only theory - conjecture - is that god is using that word to give Moses hope, and encourage him.
Any thoughts?

Yusuf Ali translation did not have perhaps but what I understand with this word is that Allah (SWT) knows the outcome but asked his Prophet Musa (Peace be upon him) to go and invite Paroah to accept One God authority. Prophet Musa (Peace be upon him) deliver the message which he reject due to his arrogance. Paroah did not deny on the judgement day that messager did come to him delivering Allah (SWT) message and he clearly deny that truth.
There are many Arabic speaking members who will explain this to you better than me.

Literal So you (B) say to him a lenient/flexible saying/opinion and belief, maybe/perhaps he mentions/remembers, or fears.
Yusuf Ali "But speak to him mildly; perchance he may take warning or fear (Allah)."
Pickthal And speak unto him a gentle word, that peradventure he may heed or fear.
Arberry yet speak gently to him, that haply he may be mindful, or perchance fear.'
Shakir Then speak to him a gentle word haply he may mind or fear.
Sarwar Both of you must speak with him in a gentle manner so that perhaps he may come to himself or have fear (of God).

Yes, it does refer to perhaps/maybe but this refers more to that WE must always give people the chance, and never judge them immediately. God knows what the person does, but we don't, so we must always give people the chance to reconsider. As we don't know the reasons why a persons doesn't believe, so we can only give the person certain proofs, only then we can make our judgement a bit of how the person is deep inside, but remember ALL judgement is to Allah alone....

KGB, I think that what you're saying might be right. That it was a question directed towards Moses, and not asked by god. Like a teachers ask's his student questions he already know the answer to. Did I understand you correctly?

I understand what you're saying, and it does make sense practically, so that we may be humble and give everyone a chance. Indeed. However, theoretically, I must ask why god chose that exact wording, when there where tons of others more 'clear' formulations available , some of which he has already stated in the quran. - for example the verse which says "You'll know them by their speech"
Anyway, thanks for input?

The use of the word "perhaps/maybe" is not a knock on God's knowledge but a testament to God's blessing of freewill and how He stands by this blessing. For, even Pharoah, after his tremendous transgressions, was still capable of repenting and changing his ways.
